I am glad that Michael continued to find meaning in this piece. I did sound for him in the 70's when he was playing around Baltimore. He seems still to enjoy it 20 years later.
@eastonmackay John Stropes (stropesdotcom) worked with Michael to produce note-for-note accurate tabs. I have been purchasing transcriptions from John for many years and I am very satisfied with the quality.
One truly amazing thing about Hedges (and this is how I try to hold myself as a musician as well), he considered himself to be a songwriter over being a guitarist. It is one thing to be proficient in your instrument, it is another to be revolutionary.
I can understand that. I found him back in 1995 before he died when I was about 14 and he blew me away, and I was a protege of Mason Williams, so that's saying something about Hedges. Anyway, I remember reading the paper and seeing that he died. It was kind of like the ringleader of a secret club you belonged to dying. It was personal, but it was hard to express that to someone else.
There's no doubt a lot of it was in his hands, but he spent a lot of time on his pickup and amp system to perfect his tone, even in the early days when he was playing as dinner entertainment at the New Varsity.
the people in the audience arent laughing at hedges they are laughing because hes so damn good. i found myself doing the same thing when i saw tommy emmanuel in concert

He didn't go goth. He was engaged to a veterinarian and wore the dog collar for her, as a joke. He also wore a medical doctor's long coat. Notice how softly he holds his plucking hand. He was classically trained--spent hours and hours practicing in his early days. Recorded all the instruments for his two or three albums. Great lyricist, too. Played the guitar right-handed but wrote left-handed. Fascinating, incredible person, he was an excellent musician who happened to play guitar VERY well.
This is an amazing sound man, not the skills and the song it self, im talking about the sound man, it's fucking amazing, what an AWESOME acustic he had, and the amp he used to EQ, amazing, Micheal Hedges lives on!
dadgad has been around for quite some time... coincidentally it's very common in indian/moroccan music (but mostly in Celtic music). if you want to see someone who invents tunings, check out Don Ross (who hedges spoke quite highly of)
My mum died just after I heard this for the first time. Forgive the pun, but it still strikes chords with me. The world IS a darker place without this talent.
I believe the numbers correspond to the notes on a standard 88 key piano or keyboard with the number 1 starting on the left side of the paino keyboard (the lower bass range), so C1 would be the first and lowest C note starting from the left side of the keyboard and then moving up to the higher treble notes an octave each time (C2, C3, C4, etc.). That's how I interpret it anyway... Hope that helps. I had the same question just a few minutes ago, and then it came to me... :)
Oh, OK. You must have stated that in Greek. Thanks for the translation. There is no slave that needs to be released. He Whom the Son sets Free, is Free indeed! :)

I'm glad he was able to stay in his own world and didnt stop because of it. That would be the hardest for me is staying into my emotion while people think your being a little silly.
The pull off at 1:56 and beyond is the best part of this video because he gets so into it and really becomes a part of the experience. I skip back to it to watch the pull off and the following snap over and over again because its just exploding with emotion and that's what I feel he's all about.
Yeah this really is one of Michael's best without any doubt man! I've been playing this non-stop for around a month now & just can't get enough of it, especially when you revisit the lp's on YT.
You can't just watch this video once. Theres the amazing music that just flows from his guitar, which is like an extension of his body. Then there's the performance, his movements, his manner with the instrument. Its insane, I've never seen anything like it. I've heard plenty of guitarists do this type of style, but Michael Hedges puts substance in it, theres something there, you just can't put your finger on it ya know? I wish I had known of his stuff before he had passed away. R.I.P. MH

I was fortunate enough to hear Michael play live on seven different occasions, and once to even personally request that he play this piece at the Rosebud (now defunct) during an intermission in Pittsburgh, PA.0 I can truly say that he was not only an all-time master of guitar composition and technique, who loved what he was doing, but that he also loved to relate to the audience, and had a sort of magical connection to them that very few players can claim. live performances someday.

Michael was also classically trained. Undergrad in Music Performance and Music Ed from Univ of Oklahoma, and his Masters in Composition from Peabody Inst, and he studied with Aaron Shearer there.
I've studied MH for about 10 yrs and agree w type3 - the turnaround isn't amazing if you don't know what it is. It does look "odd". Its great there are different versions available on YT. Michael is more calm and focused in this show than other times. In other shows you can see his mind is all over the place as he plays - the guy WAS brilliant. In this one he seems very centered and balanced and it shows in his playing. It really sucked that he died so soon after this show.
It always bugs me that the audience laughs when he plays the turnaround to get back to the verse. It is so brilliant and incredible to watch. I would expect gasps instead.
Totally agree. I think the audience is just in awe of what's just happened. It's quite a compliment really. I think this performance of Ragamuffin is inspired. Thanks to Type3 for these video's. :)
I was lucky enough to have seen him live... even though i was only 7 i thought it was the most amazing thing i had ever seen and it enspired me to start playing guitar... miss you michael, RIP
This man inspired me to go forth with the acoustic guitar... no one will ever play it the way he did... this here is the timeless genius of Michael Hedges
I was fortunate enough to have seen M.H. twice and was very saddened to hear of his death. He created music that trancended any genre. I think in time(after people catch up)he will have the same impact that Hendrix had on the electric guitar.
Wow, now that just grooves. Simply wonderful. Michael was one of the biggest influences on me, that's for certain. He still occupies a huge section of memory on my iPod! Thanks for posting this.
Two Weeks before an unbelievable artist died.... ONE OF The most amazing artists to ever grace this earth...... Michael is a god... and a wonderful man... amazing.....
This is just two weeks before he died, too young, only 43, in an auto accident on a rain-slick road...He was an innovator and brilliant musician...he was an angelic person, his music heavenly, and I'm sorry he's not here any more but at least we can listen to what he created while he was here...btw, this certainly was a different look for him but he went for the offbeat look...long braids, etc....he was a great artist, a musical genius, that's the essential thing, his music...
Micheal truly was the "guitar player from another planet". His presence is truly missed, his music...timeless. This piece has particularly wonderful memories for me of another time and better place....play on my friend, play on.
Ragamuffin has always been my favorite Hedges tune! He is one of my "idols" when it comes to guitar playing! He is sorely missed, but his music will live on FOREVER!!!
I was set to see this very show and my friend goofed on the date and we missed it; Michael died a few weeks later. I did see him 6 times, though, and would have kept seeing him. He was my favorite, and this is one of favorite pieces of his. Thank you so much for posting this.
This video is actually 20 days before his death as he died on December 2, 1997!

I would expect gasps instead.

i just don't think they'd ever seen anything like it, and thought perhaps he was goofing around or something; they had no reference frame

Totally agree. I think the audience is just in awe of what's just happened. It's quite a compliment really. I think this performance of Ragamuffin is inspired. Thanks to Type3 for these video's. :)

I was fortunate enough to have seen M.H. twice and was very saddened to hear of his death. He created music that trancended any genre. I think in time(after people catch up)he will have the same impact that Hendrix had on the electric guitar.

Oh man, how I love that arm position switching at 1:22... He was so straight it's almost inhuman.

Thanks for uploading this. A brilliant tune by an incredible player. I'm pretty sure that the stage gear wasn't entirely meant to be taken seriously!

Micheal truly was the "guitar player from another planet". His presence is truly missed, his music...timeless. This piece has particularly wonderful memories for me of another time and better place....play on my friend, play on.

I was set to see this very show and my friend goofed on the date and we missed it; Michael died a few weeks later. I did see him 6 times, though, and would have kept seeing him. He was my favorite, and this is one of favorite pieces of his. Thank you so much for posting this.
