This sucks compared to the remake. I'm sorry but as brutal as the "beating each other damn near to death with rocks" ending is in the remake, it's more realistic. The brutallity in the remake is more true to life, this is just too tame. If a psycotic rapist is about to kill your family...Nick Nolte's reaction is more believable, turning into a fucking beast! Peck is like an episode of fucking Scooby Doo Hey i just found the villian, now he will go to jail...shits lame. De Niro is the man!
The ending was a little abrupt, but loved the movie! Cady was a total psycho but had a strange charm to him. Oh and I have to add, Gregory Peck was hella good looking!
Both versions are great and though I normally hate remakes I really do prefer the ending to the 91 version. This ending was a little weak for me & the 91 version was a lot darker and loved the way Cady died.
the house boat/final scene looks like it was shot at the Arboretum in Arcadia, CA and not Savannah, GA. Note the foothills behind the house boat when Peck leaves in the motorboat.
According to Robert Mitchum, during the filming of the final fight scene Peck once accidentally punched him for real. Mitchum, knowing that Peck didn't mean to and ever the professional, refused to break character and continued filming the scene. However, upon entering his trailer, Mitchum said he "literally collapsed" due to the impact of the punch and said that he felt it for days after wards. According to Mitchum: "I don't feel sorry for anyone dumb enough who picks a fight with him (Peck)."
Robert Mitchum was such a natural. I heard him say in an interview once that taking acting lessons was "like taking lessons on being tall". I guess that doesn't hold for everyone, he just had a gift. For all his varied roles as tough guys and heroes my favorite is Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison. Maybe it should be Out Of The Past but Jane Greer stole that one.
Very briefly at 1:22 and 1:39 , left side, branches in the foreground are superimposed over Mitchum. They move with the camera. The first time that I saw this scene, I noticed that there was something visually "off" about it. The shadow on his shoulder is natural but the others that are lower and in front are not.
@WolfQueene I really enjoy the classic version, however, in retrospect it is limited by having a subject that it cannot show due to restrictions that films had when this was made. The new film is better directed and Nolte and Deniro due very well in there roles. Maybe it is just the fact that Scorsese directed it, but there performances actually seem even more effective. Plus the movie takes more time to develop, check out the remake... I highly recommend it.That's just my opinion.
Mitchum's portrayal of Cady is every bit as menacing as that of De Niro, with allowances made for changing sensibilities over time. I think the issue between Cady and the lawyer is far more interesting in the Scorcese film and the scenes between De Niro and Juliet Lewis are outstanding, but it is amazing how well the original Cape Fear stands up today. Mitchum really steals the picture. What a great actor!
Both versions of this film are excellent, the ending here though shows the turnaround of fear on mitchum's character when he realises his victor wont slay him but have him condemned to life imprisonment. You can see why greg peck wanted robert to play the sadist role, all the actors were brilliant here, thanks for posting.
@mentalist555 Agreed! Robert Mitchum was a fantastic actor. I think that his bust for "reefers" actually helped him with film noir movies: Where he would play the role of a psychopathic preacher who kills widows for money in THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and a violent ex-con as in CAPE FEAR. I like the original version of CAPE FEAR, but not the latest one.
@Nguli34689 Yes,Robert Mitchum made acting look deceptively easy,he deserves every credit for overcoming a very tough upbringing, but that shaped his unique style in the roles he played.I think he was underrated by some critics. He had a great range of acting skills when given the chance, from the chilling psychopath you mention to the modest teacher in Ryans Daughter.Even when he starred in an average film, his screen presence gave added weight,he was always compelling, believable, never fake.
Thanks for uploading this. I've seen the remake several times, but this is the first time I watched the original version. I think I prefer the remake, but this is a great film also.
You know, there are many ways of getting even with Max Cody. I hate child molesters. A gun is good and I know damn well how to get out of a strangle hold. ARM YOUR WOMEN!!! We live in the times when we must and we must also support the Second Ammendment. The bullshit about the need for guns was in the old days is crap. There are areas in the U.S. where you have to be your own cop. And if guns are unavailable, there is always Hydrofluoric acid, Hydrogen sulfide, Potassium cyanide et al.
Those are all very non-practical weapons for defense. How do you poison someone in self-defense? Just get a chair and beat them over the head with it. Or when you have a poker in your hand back out of the room while swinging it at them instead of just standing there and kind of dropping it then getting abducted like Nancy.
Her parents told her that the guy was REALLY bad news. Even if you're not going to stab them she could still scream and run and flail it around, instead of just standing there and going "meh"*drops it*
@Bottery But an experience like that is going to make people respond in different ways. Some might have passed out just by the sight if him. Everyones different, the whole "well i would've" means just YOU would have MAYBE done so". Never know till it actually happens and like dude said before "its a movie".
Yeah, I don't really care I was just responding to some guy who said that keeping poison in his house will make him safer. I don't know why people like to latch onto unrelated comments to start pointless arguments.
I love Gregory Peck.a great Actor,a very handsome man,classy and a real Gentleman :)

According to the copyright in the final credits, it was 1961, not 1962.

@mdervish15 That's because it's the same :) Scorsese shot his remake around Bernard Hermann's score for the 1962 original.

Thank you so much for uploading! What a great film, and Mitchum is fantastic in it.
Maybe one of these days I'll watch the remake, but I dunno... De Niro and Nolte will never match up to Mitchum and Peck in my book.
