very true. At this time it was all pop music. Rostropovich was the brightest bulb behind the scenes though. Too bad he didn't get the attention he earned.
kc7sqd-Your life has been enriched by being fortunate enough to have attended that concert. He was in this century the only cellist on the same level as the deservedly legendary-Pablo Casals.I play the Dvorak concerto over and over in short periods of time, and discover new beauty each time. How I envy you for being there.Vladimir Horowitz was my biggest concert memory, and this one of yours is on a par with that. The piano simply became an orchestra-in his hands.
I saw Slava play Dvorak's Cello Concerto in Seattle on his 75th birthday. He received a standing ovation when he walked on the stage, before he even played any music. His playing was magical, the best I have ever heard, and when the playing over, the ovation lasted almost 10 minutes, and included the symphony playing "Happy Birthday" and Slava playing an encore of a Bach suite.
A great artist and also a great human being. He knew what communism did to his country and to his people and he fought against it. A brave man. Rest in peace. God Bless You!
I'm so sad. I loved his playing. RIP Rostropovich. At least he can join Richter and Oistrakh in heaven now. I'm gonna go play his recording of Shostakovich cello concerto No. 1 over and over again.
The news of his death shocked me when I first heard it, a few hours ago. I guess it's because you don't expect legendary people like him to do ordinary human things, such as dying! And he truly was inhumanly talented, a role model for all cellists to come and a remarkable personality.
I'm so sad. Even after the almost 48 hours since he has passed. He was a genius. I love him as a person, and a musician. He was the greatest cellist that has ever lived. I will miss him terribly.
I am a Cello student living in Auckland, New Zealand.
In my view, Rostropovich wasn't just a great Cellist who premiered many of the 20th century Cello works, he was a great human being not afraid to speak his mind. Furthermore, he was a patriot who was always willing to give up his life to destroy injustice. Slava...R.I.P and Thank you so much for making this world a better place. You will be missed, my eternal inspiration.
Thank you very much for posting this video on youtube.Like most people I am absolutely stunned that Rostropovitch has actually died. All my life he has been my absolute hero. When I heard his cello playing around 1970 in London he played as a genius. He took control of the whole concert hall. People were truly in a trance listening to this unbelievable cellist.Let us always remember his amazing greatness. He did so much for others with charities. A truly great man.
I have full respect for this man.
It's truly a shame to lose such talent and virtue.

Lucky men.. I'm 15 years old, I was really happy, that Rostropovich would come here, to Hungary on the 15th of April. But he was too ill to come. :(
I hope, once I will be a cellist, as good as a half Rostropovich, but I know, it's almost impossible.. :(:)
