The unit is a voltmeter with a small load. By simply charging the battery, then removing the AC Power, turning on the small load and waiting a few minutes you can get the true reading of the battery voltage. This will indicate how sulphated a battery is. It's not a high priced test, but it can give you an indication of how much capacity is left in the battery without removing it from the car.

How does it test batteries? Testing a batter involves a load test and a capacity test. I doubt that device does that.
