Both trucks are great. Nissan has a fully boxed frame, 6500 lb towing capacity and great crash test rating. Tacoma has a 6500 lb towing capacity as well, so you taco lovers can't say it tows more. The Nissan actually has a higher payload rating. Just FYI. Both have optional locking diffs, and have skid plates. So they are both good trucks. I guess it's just more of how you were raised. If your parents had a yota, then you just think they are the best. Same with the Nissan. So shut the fuck up
I've had two Nissan pickup trucks, both 4cyl 2 wheel drive. One was a 1991 and the other was a brand new 2001. I loved the 1991 pickup but the 2001 was a POS! That sucker was supposed to be a 4cyl but it ate more gas than any vehicle I ever owned and the power was wayyyy underpowered. We would press the gas to teh floor in the 2001 and it sputtered up the hills in CO and had a rough ride. We traded it in for a 97 pathfinder 4wd vs and loved the pathfinder. I will never buy a nissan pick-up again

I`m getting a 2012 silver tacoma tomorrow, in my family we used to love ford pick ups, but i had a lot of electronical problems with my 2008 explorer sport track, so this would be our first toyota pick up, but a lot of friends told me only good things of their hilux and tacomas so its time to give it a try, if i like it, we would be trading our chevrolet tornado for a hilux next year. fuck nissan!! lol nissan in mexico in many ways is consider a economical brand for poor people
I have a 07 frontier nismo and my buddy has an 08 tacoma trd, off road i give it to the taco but on the street the nismo dominates. The nismo has better speed and acceleration!

All the way I own a 2007 xterra traded in for a 2011 pro x xterra I drove 2, 4 runners 2000 and a 2008 (very weak) and 2 tacomas 2005 2009(also did not like the feel of drive and power + was a gas hog!!!!) 1 2007 tundra ya the tundra drov nice but the Nissan Titan drove just as good or better then the tundra
I really prefer Tacomas. My dad owns an 05 Tundra and a Nissan, my mom has a 1997 honda crv, and my brother owns a 2001 Tundra and a 1996 Tacoma. But I do drive all of them on certain occasions. So far, I haven't found whats right for me. But I did see this new 2012 Tacoma, silver double cab at the car dealer and decided to go out for a test drive. Now I absolutely love it and bought one 2 weeks ago. Out of all of them, the Tacoma has the PERFECT ride for me. :)
Toyota Tacoma is way better than a Nissan Frontier! I know from my own experience:
1. The Toyota Tacoma looks way better, more reliable, very sporty looking, and the interior provides a lot of space so you won't feel like you're being squeeze inside.
2. The Nissan Frontier is no where near awesome for its looks, have no idea whether it's reliable or not because I owned one 8 years ago and traded it for a new car, and the interior is very narrow, so it feels like I can't breathe in it.
Both are awesome. But the short box is weak on the Nissan. Honestly short box pickups are stupid. Great for offroad approach and departure clearances though if you have 4WD and some ground clearance. V6's are here to stay, thank the lords.
I'll give Nissans an F, they suck. But I will give Tacoma = A+ :) I just bought the new 2012 Toyota Tacoma a week ago. Toyotas the best looking trucks out there, but thats my opinion. I'm no where near Nissan, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and Honda trucks.

@1waffleiron Frontiers are more reliable than tacomas. This is a fact. They've had less problems on them, when you go vehicle by vehicle, than any other midsized truck. Both are great trucks though. They're definitely the two best midsized ones. I'd personally go with the frontier but I wouldn't say either is better than the other, both are quite worthy choices, it's just in what you like better.

@1waffleiron Yes, statistically they will have less problems than a tacoma. That's not to say that's the case with all Nissan vs. Toyota vehicles. Nissan vehicles as a whole are less reliable than Toyota's vehicles but if you're comparing these two trucks, the frontier is more reliable.

CrashJSTest Toyota Tacoma I admit is very good but when you compare NISSAN is better. Horsepower Nissan: 261@5600 RPM ; Toyota: 236 @ 5200 RPM. TORQUE: NISSAN: 281 @ 4000 RPM TOYOTA: 266 @ 4000 RPM, and more little details. Nissan Frontiers have an awesome comfort: leather, sunroof .etc. They look more nicer: ALL Chromed: mirror, handles, the roof rack is nice.

The tow rating on the Nissan is 6,500 lbs not 5,000 like the Toyota, so it could have pulled even more if the tester would have wanted it to. The Tacoma won the dunes and the brush test, but the tester did not specify by how much. The ride quality was also won by Nissan, both the interior and the road ride quality. There is your winner

Love to hate but hate not to love= my 05 frontier's tranny blew at 83,000 Miles and there are many more situations like mine. The 05/06 models have tranny problems (transmission cooler failure causes coolant to ruin the trans). It cost me 6k. I suggest if you're going to buy one make sure it is a 07 and up or 05/06 with a new tranny!!!!!!

@obsoulite I drive very lightly and never go offroad there are more problems on the 05 one then the 06 the tranny's from what i have seen last up to about 150,000 on the 06 instead of the around 90,000 for the 05's. there is even a lawsuit in the usa and canada.
@obsoulite also if you search 2005 nissan frontier transmission problems you can find a long list of people with problems. i still own it and it has been for me the best truck i have owned
i dunno. it was pretty darn close, i'd say. they said the nissan was better on most except the sand due to weight. i have a 2010 pro 4x and it's fantastic. so is the tacoma. i just wanted a little more power, better offroad toughness.

I bought a 2008 Tacoma, was completely disappointed in it. I was so disappointed in it after five months of ownership I traded it in. I ended up getting a Frontier and am much happier! In my opinion it is a much nicer truck!! More refined in virtually every way!

there's no sense in fighting over which is the better truck. obviously it's all about personal preference. toyota and nissan trucks are both dependable and tough trucks. i prefer the look of the frontier but the tacoma's look badass too.

I honestly think Tacoma (for midsize trucks anyway) is the best truck around, you get everything with it 4 door, 4X4 long bed, V6 that makes just under 300HP good MPG, i have nothing against a Frontier or other midsize trucks (Dakota, colorado) but I seem to see more Tacomas on the road than any other. just my 2 cents. Either way as long as you dont get a Ridgeline (that things a joke man have been in it)

I don't know what these guys are smoking but I need to get me some. I drive aprox 1k miles a week for my job and for the past 18 months I have been in a Frontier. Its was a nice truck for sure but I just "upgraded" to a Tacoma. And it is an upgrade, interior fit and finish it on a different level and the solidity of the suspension/drive train is superior too. I continue to like the Nissan but the Tacoma is a better vehicle, pure and simple.

I can say I have driven a Tacoma and I think their looks are better and the wheel base is a bit higher which I like, along with the ground clearance(16in stock) which is the highest I know of compared to other trucks. Other note, I actually drive a little rodeo lol, I've been stuck 7 times, and of all trucks and atvs, The Sliverado Z71 and the Gliz 660 is what get me out.

I have a 94 Geo Prizm w/ all toyota running gear & 260,000 miles. We've replaced 1 battery, 1 thermostat, 1 starter, 4 spark plugs, 2 CV axles &1 front hub assembly & when my dad totaled it last year he still drove it 4 miles back home w/ no coolant in it. Despite that, me putting the car through complete hell w/ me learning to drive the north GA dirt roads & the fact it's never had a "regular" oil change, it still runs perfect. Nothing against nissan, but I'll take a toyota thank you very much.

IF nissan wants to out offroad, a yota, they need to change those suspension pivoting points on the frames for a better travel range redesighn those controll arms with better ball studs and steering pivots, and install longer less rigid spring rates, add a tad more lift, and go back to a 9" style axle assembly, basically a nissan raptor, and dont be scared to thicken those frame rails a little more! nissan built some real good drive trains, if any one could do it it would be a nissan
The truck I haul my wood with is a 1989 Nissan Pathfinder I bought new in 1989 it has 1,345,284 miles on it I spent $3,100 in repairs in all that time. the engine never even had it's valve covers off the wheels are chrome and still shine like new

The Tacoma is awesome. I personally think it looks MUCH nicer than the frontier because it looks just like a Titan. If it changed a little I would like it for sure, but don't believe this video when it says one is smoother or rides better off road because it all depends on preference. I prefer the interior, exterior, and driving of a tacoma but I understand why people like frontiers

I'm in the same boat. I have no knocks against Toyota and respect their overall reputation for quality, but I own a '06 Frontier that I bought brand new, right about when this review came out. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything else. I run it hard: it's towed boats, hauled hundreds of pounds of paver block, and hunted ducks, geese, deer, pheasant and quail near some of the crappiest dirt roads in Nebraska, Iowa and Colorado. Couldn't ask for a tougher truck for the $.

1. The Toyota Tacoma looks way better, more reliable, very sporty looking, and the interior provides a lot of space so you won't feel like you're being squeeze inside.
2. The Nissan Frontier is no where near awesome for its looks, have no idea whether it's reliable or not because I owned one 8 years ago and traded it for a new car, and the interior is very narrow, so it feels like I can't breathe in it.

@1waffleiron Frontiers are more reliable than tacomas. This is a fact. They've had less problems on them, when you go vehicle by vehicle, than any other midsized truck. Both are great trucks though. They're definitely the two best midsized ones. I'd personally go with the frontier but I wouldn't say either is better than the other, both are quite worthy choices, it's just in what you like better.

TORQUE: NISSAN: 281 @ 4000 RPM TOYOTA: 266 @ 4000 RPM, and more little details. Nissan Frontiers have an awesome comfort: leather, sunroof .etc. They look more nicer: ALL Chromed: mirror, handles, the roof rack is nice.

The tow rating on the Nissan is 6,500 lbs not 5,000 like the Toyota, so it could have pulled even more if the tester would have wanted it to. The Tacoma won the dunes and the brush test, but the tester did not specify by how much. The ride quality was also won by Nissan, both the interior and the road ride quality. There is your winner

Love to hate but hate not to love= my 05 frontier's tranny blew at 83,000 Miles and there are many more situations like mine. The 05/06 models have tranny problems (transmission cooler failure causes coolant to ruin the trans). It cost me 6k. I suggest if you're going to buy one make sure it is a 07 and up or 05/06 with a new tranny!!!!!!

@obsoulite I drive very lightly and never go offroad there are more problems on the 05 one then the 06 the tranny's from what i have seen last up to about 150,000 on the 06 instead of the around 90,000 for the 05's. there is even a lawsuit in the usa and canada.

I bought a 2008 Tacoma, was completely disappointed in it. I was so disappointed in it after five months of ownership I traded it in. I ended up getting a Frontier and am much happier! In my opinion it is a much nicer truck!! More refined in virtually every way!

I honestly think Tacoma (for midsize trucks anyway) is the best truck around, you get everything with it 4 door, 4X4 long bed, V6 that makes just under 300HP good MPG, i have nothing against a Frontier or other midsize trucks (Dakota, colorado) but I seem to see more Tacomas on the road than any other. just my 2 cents. Either way as long as you dont get a Ridgeline (that things a joke man have been in it)

I don't know what these guys are smoking but I need to get me some. I drive aprox 1k miles a week for my job and for the past 18 months I have been in a Frontier. Its was a nice truck for sure but I just "upgraded" to a Tacoma. And it is an upgrade, interior fit and finish it on a different level and the solidity of the suspension/drive train is superior too. I continue to like the Nissan but the Tacoma is a better vehicle, pure and simple.

I can say I have driven a Tacoma and I think their looks are better and the wheel base is a bit higher which I like, along with the ground clearance(16in stock) which is the highest I know of compared to other trucks. Other note, I actually drive a little rodeo lol, I've been stuck 7 times, and of all trucks and atvs, The Sliverado Z71 and the Gliz 660 is what get me out.

I have a 94 Geo Prizm w/ all toyota running gear & 260,000 miles. We've replaced 1 battery, 1 thermostat, 1 starter, 4 spark plugs, 2 CV axles &1 front hub assembly & when my dad totaled it last year he still drove it 4 miles back home w/ no coolant in it. Despite that, me putting the car through complete hell w/ me learning to drive the north GA dirt roads & the fact it's never had a "regular" oil change, it still runs perfect. Nothing against nissan, but I'll take a toyota thank you very much.

IF nissan wants to out offroad, a yota, they need to change those suspension pivoting points on the frames for a better travel range redesighn those controll arms with better ball studs and steering pivots, and install longer less rigid spring rates, add a tad more lift, and go back to a 9" style axle assembly, basically a nissan raptor, and dont be scared to thicken those frame rails a little more! nissan built some real good drive trains, if any one could do it it would be a nissan

The truck I haul my wood with is a 1989 Nissan Pathfinder I bought new in 1989 it has 1,345,284 miles on it I spent $3,100 in repairs in all that time. the engine never even had it's valve covers off the wheels are chrome and still shine like new
When I hear people say the Tacoma is tough I laugh at them

Frontier all the way bigger fatter frame and way better award winning engine
I don't care about looks Toyota has been pour in quality lately and their trucks
no longer measure up .Though the Toyota Tacoma is still a decent truck it falls short of the King
On the other hand you can get a nice second hand Ford F150 for the price of any one of these .

The Tacoma is awesome. I personally think it looks MUCH nicer than the frontier because it looks just like a Titan. If it changed a little I would like it for sure, but don't believe this video when it says one is smoother or rides better off road because it all depends on preference. I prefer the interior, exterior, and driving of a tacoma but I understand why people like frontiers

Wow this video is a straight up joke, I just saw a Tacoma Vs. HondaRidgeline pull off ...The taco yanked it all the way down the street. Btw the honda had more power. Frontiers wheelbase is low and looks bad, its heavy 300lbs more, and the top rack is cute so what.

i am not really a brand loyal fanboy like most toyota owners (there are some real assholes who owns toyotas) but i think dollar for dollar the frontier all the way. the tacoma is a nice truck but with the quality taking a shit with toyota lately with their frames rusting out, i'd be pissed. i have a frontier and i like it , but i also like the tacoma as well

I'm in the same boat. I have no knocks against Toyota and respect their overall reputation for quality, but I own a '06 Frontier that I bought brand new, right about when this review came out. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything else. I run it hard: it's towed boats, hauled hundreds of pounds of paver block, and hunted ducks, geese, deer, pheasant and quail near some of the crappiest dirt roads in Nebraska, Iowa and Colorado. Couldn't ask for a tougher truck for the $.

The Nissan is a better built truck with a box frame as opposed to the Toyota U channel. Thats why its heavier and not quiet as nimble as the Toyota
