Balis are a VERY powerful psychological weapon. They are no more dangerous than a regular knife, but because of their audio-visual display, they can cause panic and confusion. Most fights will end if you can show that you can flip a bali with dexterity because you'll scare the guy off OR he will focus on the knife and completely disregard your other attacks. Effectives in pure combat, a good closed bali will never fail, because it relies on YOUR grip, and not a mechanical device like folders.
balisongs are great fighting tools... when it is locked in the open position. Those extra flipping maneuvers are worthless in a real fight. First of all the guy's eyes was on the knife while flipping, 2nd when he flips it's slow, 3rd he limits his arms area of movement with those maneuvers thus eliminating extra defense or offense.
Its all show. Whats the point of all those extra moves if your in a knife fight? You really think some one is going to flip a knife around with the chance of dropping it, when his life is in danger.
and plus. the blade here is a "butterfly knife" has two pins on the handle which makes it unsuitable to be used in a combat situation without breaking. i guess real balisong might have a sturdier built blade-pin mount.

I wonder how it is with the metal grip if the blade came under pressure or got slippery? I notice the icepick grip seems preferred in the Filipino knife I've been watching. I'm only a beginner, but wouldn't all that circular motion be suseptible to meets and pick-offs? I'm a scaredy-cat and keep my hands very tight in-guard!

It's an art form and a good demonstration of skill paying tribute to the Pinoy Balisong. We dont sit behind a computer hiding and typing away. WE TRAIN and work our skills to fight with weapons be it edged, impact , firearms and emptyhands. That's the real deal there. Stabbin' and slashing. Fantastically smooth transfers too. I know hundreds of tricks, but would hand over my wallet to this guy in a heartbeat. :)

bah, he can flip and toss all he wants pretty well but in the end he has to stop the blade to make the slashes and stabs.
