Szeryng was always very true to the composer in whatever piece he played. That's why I consider him one of greats. Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Bruch#1&3, Brahms, Goldmark, Paganini #5&6, Vieuxtemps #5, Bull's Fantastico, Wieniawski #2, Saint Saens #3, Hubay #3, Sibelius, Karlowicz, Korngold, each one of these concertos slow mvts contains unreachable depths of the composer's soul. God Bless Them.
my violin teacher was his friend and he always says Szeryng did music, he was a complete musician not just an excellent violinist. And personally a haven't heard better than him and oistrakh.
Exactly, the greatest musicians are those who let you forget about them and enchant you with the music they play. Szeryng was one of the most intelectual, expressive and versatile musician. Listen to his Beethoven and Brahms Concertos, unsurpassable!
@bryanjohnston01 you are absoultely right!!I really like you for your comment because it's rare today to find someone who not care so much about huge tehnique(like heifetz)in the view of szeryng. And also Szeryng has iron tehnique,I can assure you.Have you heard Szeryng being out of tune?See his live beethoven here on youtube. In the year of his death.Perfect...He dont want you to not close your mouth for a week.He wants you to cry...And thats very special!
One of the most transcendental artist to ever walk this earth. Inspirational to many generations to come. I grew up listening to his recording of the Thaikovsky violin concerto with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam conducted by Bernard Haitink on EMI records. It is so awesome to be able to watch him play live this work, with the same refinement and elegance that you can hear on the late 60's recording. Please up load the rest of the piece. Also were did you get this footage?

People often complain that Szeryng never had a distinct style, Perlman once labelling him as something of a violin 'chameleon'.
However, I beg to differ, what is wrong with that? That is what makes Szeryng great in my eyes.
My teacher would always tell me when holding Szeryng in high esteem:
When Heifetz plays Tchaikovsky, you hear Heifetz
When Francescatti plays Tchaikovsky, you hear Francescatti
When Szeryng plays Tchaikovsky, you hear Tchaikovsky.

He may have been the best. Not the hugest technique, but probably one of the all time best at making good music. IMHO.
Long live his memory!

Just a phenomenon of integrity and purity. Szeryng was a true Master of controlled but still burning passion.

This is from the Huberman Festival in Israel in the early 80s. It exists on video (though not DVD).
