I love the french connection but i know one person who doesnt like it, he recons its poorly made and badly acted and then came out and said that he thinks transformers 2 was of the most well crafted and best made films ever, gives you an idea how many idiots there are out there.
Great episode guys, would love to see more of them posted here. I thought you would have mentioned that "Pelham 123" has one of the best acknowledgements in it's closing credits - "This fim was made with absolutely no help whatsoever from the New York City Transport Authority" - especially considering Jeff's occupation!
Also, how about doing an episode on Kubrick's films?
Yep a subscriber. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three was the movie. I have a big collection, lots of books about movies and I've been around for a while, So, I am always gratefull when someone discover me a very good movie as you did guys.
@guely55 Glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. I would also recommend that you watch 'The Silent Partner'. Don't look up anything about the plot, or the movie will be ruined. Just watch, and I know you'll love it!
Okay, I will go blind on this one. Haven't seen it or heard of (maybe i was overestimating myself!) If you want you can have a look on my blog : guelyofsweden
In the english section (i write in spanish as well) under movies you might find something interesting. Last i write was about Barfly (with the dirty Mickey Rourke) is not from the seventies but i was impress in good way!
@beachn69 Didn't leave it out/ We plan to do an entire show on the series. Mike hasn't seen them all - that's why we haven't done it earlier. Serpico was reviewed on the Lumet show.
Where was ‘Dirty Harry’? That one was about as important and influencal as The ‘French Connection’. Also, I’m also a big fan of European cop movies like ‘Execution Squad’, ‘Almost Human’, ‘Le Cercle Rouge’ and to a lesser extent: ‘Live Like a Cop, Die a Man.’
@MartinKoolhoven We didn't talk about it as we cant to do a whole show devoted to the series. In addition, we wanted to talk about NYC cop films, and the Dirty Harry series is a product of San Fran.
@TheChapaqua It's not really a sequel. It's a movie that Jim Kelly did that had nothing to do with the Black Belt Jones. It was renamed to fool people to rent it as it was an awful film.
Two further classics missed so far. Richard Rush's 'Freebie and the Bean'; And 'Fuzz' with Burt Reynolds. (Based on one of the Ed McBain '87th Precinct novels.) Check 'em out.
I should watch the show afore commentin. Agree about original Pelham 123. Definitely in top3 best 70's picture. Greatest closing scene ever. And considering there's no mention of Travolta and Denzel's efforts, when did you film this thing? Never saw 'God told me to' but, sorry, it sounds like shite, so thanks for the heads-up. And Serpico was god-awfully boring. Does the Elliot Gould Philip Marlowe movie count?
Gonna hafta agree with Chappy: my fave was always 'The 7 Ups'. Direct, to the point badassery. And for my money, the best car chase of that era. Yeah, you heard me! Better than The French Connection's by a clear mile.
I really enjoyed this episode. I've got The French Conneciton on tape but havent watched it yet, after hearing you discuss it I'm really looking foward to watching it and the sequel. Love Taking of Pelham 123 also, great movie. Hope you guys get to do a Dirty Harry show too, that would be alot of fun.
Personally I've always been a fan of Peter Hyams' 'Busting', not to mention Phillip D'antoni's 'The Seven-Ups'. On the other hand I could never stand 'Badge 373'. A cop-thriller written by Peter Hamill should have been fantastic. Anything but.
Koinshaku: there is a very good possibility we'll discuss the Dirty Harry films. Like, a GOOD possibility ( as in "we probably will") which is why we tabled that for another ep. Don't want to repeat ourselves.
Thanks for the special mention of Roy Schieder's contribution to The French Connection - the unsung hero of the film. You only really covered New York cop films here so you still have room for an episode on 70s cop films not in New York. Not so much as a mention of Dirty Harry?
I will have to check out Fort Apache. I saw The Seven-Ups not too long ago and was somewhat disappointed. I think you guys should do a five hour tribute to Richard Lynch, mentioning every single film in his catalog, or at least as long as you can go before Mike passes out.
I think you guys should've given Mike "Fort Apache the Bronx." Because if it came out in 1980, that means it was principally shot in the 70s. I mean, The Shining came out in 1980, but it's obviously a 70s film just like "Airplane!" Total 70s films.
I never had any interest in seeing the movies you talked about, but after you did, I'm psyched for French Connection 2! (as well as Fort Apache the Bronx)
French Connection - The subway scene between Popeye and the bad guy is brilliant, I love the way the bad guy smiles and waves as the tube moves off and then at the end how Popeye does the same so he's getting his revenge by doing what the bad guy did to him. Classic :)
They need to do a show on Dirty Harry. I have only seen Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, and The Dead Pool. I have never seen The Enforcer and Sudden Impact, but I would still like a Dirty Harry discussion.
Excellent show. Loved THE FRENCH CONNECTION and the best car chase of all time for me. I actually wondered right at the beginning if this was an older show and was vindicated when the Live show dates for 2007 came up. I don't know what it was (either the lighting or the camera work), but it felt like your shows on James Bond. Again, great subject.

The "famous" scene from The French Connection in the subway is despite being awesome a straight rip-off from Le Samourai by Jean-Pierre Melville.

Any chance of an episode on 80's cop films? Personal faves? 'Year of the Dragon' and 'Cruising'.

@TheChapaqua Anything is possible. Make your requests on the CineFiles' Facebook page.

A 'blaxploitation' episode? Can't wait. Personally my favourite blaxploitation films are 'Detroit 9000',as well as 'The Black Gestapo'.
TheChapaqua 1 year ago
@TheChapaqua Mine would be Truck Turner, Coffy and Black Caesar.

Oh come on. That's a technicality. On that basis, you could say, Shaft was an ex-cop turned private dick. You guys are tough.

@TheChapaqua I would be more to discuss this on a blaxploitation episode.

Surprised nobody mentioned 'Shaft'. Not too sure about the sequels though.

@TheChapaqua Shaft is really about a private dick, who a sex machine to all the chicks. Hence, not a cop movie.

I take it no-one likes 'Cruising'? Still, give Friedkin credit for making it. You just know they wouldn't try it today.

@TheChapaqua I think Cruising is an 80s film....

@HingwayFilms It was made in '79 and released in March of '80s, so it just barely makes it.
