rabengeraun: Glenn Gould was abit eccentric. He had some peculiar ways, but that does not mean that he was crazy. He was some sort of genius but in a different way. He was genius in mind, yes, but also in soul. Noone can now copy any of his ways because Gould is Gould. Nevertheless, noone can "play" like him.
Glenn was one with the piano. It wasn't a separate object that he played. It was an extension of his body just as much as his voice was.
I suppose you could say that about many great pianists. But Glenn's connection to his music is so captivating to my ears that sometimes other great pianists' versions of Gould's favorite pieces sound distant and dull by comparison.
I'm not 100% sure, but I *think* it was something along the lines of "...and no ritard before, and no accelerando on the beat, but surprise surprise..."
i bought the sheet music for this and the reason he stops mid way is cause the music starts using 4 staff lines. he must of played with them on top of each other when he recorded it.

What a loony - he only got away with this because some bunch of nerds who dared to call themselves music-experts liked him

the ornamentation he adds (?) from 0:40 is stunning-great elan. It's always a joy to hear Gould play music which he clearly loved.

He was not only a great pianist but also an amazing conductor.
He understood how it should sing with music. He is a great pianist who is the most popular still now.

I have the same with Gould playing it on CD. But this video looks really interesting, too. Thank you very much for postin' it.
Greetings from Germany.
PS: I actually like Gould's transposition for piano much more than Wagner's original one. :-)

What does he say leading up to that? I could only catch "no accelerando."

Brilliantly illuminating performance, exchiting but devoid of sentimentalism! I want to hug G.G. !!!

Amazing and incredible performance!
Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg!
By this performance of the Bach style,he showed us the figure of the embryo of this music.
I like Gould so much!!

Well, isnt' it the proof that
a) The Meistersinger Prelude is Number XXV of the Well-tempered piano, part 2
b) it is written for voice and - perhaps - some instrumental accompaniment?... :-))
