America can go to space. NASA is everything the country does to make this happen. Under COTS this is going to change. Launching and building space systems is going the same way like air travel of the 1920s. Only the government and the military had planes, then airlines emerged. There is a market for cheap,safe and reliable space travel. Committing to a program that can be obsolete by the time commercial space companies can do the job at a fraction of the cost? Obama is right to be leery.
Never mind now. It's not going to happen since this Country is on the very edge of Bankruptcy. Because NASA didn't pass a proper budget, the U.S. credit rating will be lowered to Junk-Bond status...i.e. NO way of ever funding this space mission! The "good" news is they'll STILL find a way to pay for welfare, section8 housing, food stamps, child care, college aid, pre-K to 12 schooling, breakfast-lunch programs, prison housing, etc. etc.etc. for the 16+ MILLION ILLEGAL aliens in our Country.

The fact is that follow moon projects and indeed spaceflight as a whole has been put back at least 50 years. Ditch Orion and concentrate on an SSTO spaceplane to be properly researched and built over a longer period Once we have that, other projects can then follow but not at the expense of welfare programs.. It's a case of knowing what is a luxury and what is essential.
How is the US going to fund this? With the chaos within their financial sector and the huge bail out by the US government where is the money to fund a huge effort such as this going to come from? Added to that, why is a re-useable shuttle craft such as Venturestar not being used?
