How did you managed to use the caps of the cube as another desktop? In gnome i only can use the 4 lateral sides, caps are only for decoration. Is this some kde feature? Thanks
KDE can operate with many desktops. The "cube" with more than 4 sides rotates in different directions. We could not say which sides are lateral and which are caps. Algorithm is simple - workspace has rows & columns with desktops, but angle between 2 neighbour sides is 90 degrees always. It has no real-life possibility to imagine this space in 3D. So, on a screen the workspace could not only be visualised as a cube, but also as hexagon or so.
The effects are all default, but speed of some effects changed by standard tools. It is a 64 bits version.
Now I use KDE 4.5.3, it has some new cool stuff with activities, but in my usual work i don't use the new possibilities of KDE 4.5. And Dolphin (KDE file manager) frequently freezes for a half-minute or so.
@MrShkiperov Thanks! I was wondering how you did that on Debian. I always thought it was difficult because I read somewhere that Debian didn't consider KDE "free" software and therefore didn't fully support it in their repo's. Guess I didn't read the article correctly :-)
@miscible21 Debian's CD1 include only Gnome desktop, but whether you get DVD or more than one CD or internet connection, you will be able to install KDE. I had VPN internet connection and Debian Lenny DVD1 with old KDE version included, so I had to install OS without X and desktop environment, then set up VPN and after all installed KDE from repos and updated Debian to Squeeze.
Удаляю Ubuntu, Debian на диске есть...

KDE is charming but a bit heavy when compared with GNOME: D

@martmelee this video made 9 months ago, now 'sid' branch goes with kde 4.6.4.
If you want to use newer version of some particular software and it's absent in 'testing' or 'sid', you can build the latest version from sources.

Left menu is standard KDE panel with links, + auto-hide option. Menu in down-left corner is KDE system menu on a small panel, + changed ico.
