  • "Poor Man's Prime Lens" as demonstrated here on this Nikon D3...

  • Yeah, so?

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Haha, nothings wrong with it, it's just that you call it a poor mans prime when the D3 isn't a ver "poor mans" camera. Great lens nonetheless.

  • using this lens on my d100.

    brilliant :)

  • this works with d7000 right?

  • Mmhm.

  • @51blue1 sure

  • @51blue1

yes! I use it with D90 (before D7000) and it's ok!

  • @51blue1 Yes it works great with D7000

  • @51blue1 yEah it works.

  • One question. I am using D3100 with this lens and I know it can't automatically focus. But when I turn the focus ring and then get the focus correctly and halfly press the shutter button, there are no "beep" sound to indicate that the focus is correct.

Is it a normal situation for D3100? or My D3100 has some problems? Thanks.

  • Please refer to page 144 of your D3100 user's manual.

  • @ganbalecheung There is no beep sound because you are on manual focus, which means you are allowed to take a photo even when it's out of focus. The beep sound is only heard when the camera has successfully autofocussed and is ready to take a photo, hence you only hear it when you are on autofocus mode. Hope this helps! (I have a D3100 myself)

  • I have problem on this lens on my D90, everytime i take a picture there is this blue spot on the middle of the image.

  • Simply clean the lens on the front and rear glass elements with blower, brush, rubbing alcohol, and microfiber. Take the glass filter off (if attached) and test again.

If the blue spot is still there, most likely it came from the inside; this is where you'll have to send the lens in for professional cleaning.

If no problem without the filter attached, clean the filter, and then test again. If problem is still there, upgrade the glass filter to a higher quality multi-resistant coated one.

  • Small, cheap & sharp!

  • You report some very nice things about this lens. You do not, however, give a numerical rating on this video. What would you rate this lens on a scale of one to 10?

  • Hmm, we would rate it 6 out of 10.

We think we should redo this old aging video in the future.

  • one question.. whats the difference of 50mm 1.8d to 1.4d?? if im after the soft bokeh and i will be using it for night photography... ??

  • The answer is in the video description.

  • is that lens good for nikon d3100..?

  • We do not know because we do not take pictures and / or decide for you. Rent it out for a week or two to see and decide for yourself. FYI, manual focus only.

  • @bulbolTeam01 You will not be able to autofocus with this lens as it does not have an inbuilt AF motor, and needs the SLR body to have an inbuilt motor, which is not present in d3100. However, all other features will work

  • Dude.. I wanna buy this lens, but the AF will work on my D70s?

    many thanks

  • Yep.

  • which one will you recommend on a d90 body? a 35mm 1.8 or a 50mm 1.8?

  • Don't know because it is not our decision; it is entirely up to you.

  • @cr3ys,

    35mm 1.8 on a D90 is equivelent to 50mm.

    50mm 1.8 on a D90 is equivelent to 71.4mm.

Every lens you get for a D90 will end up 1.4x.

  • Actually, the DX format's crop factor is 1.5.

    35mm on D90 becomes 52.5mm.

    50mm on D90 becomes 75mm.

  • did the lens can be with da nikon d5000?

  • Manual focus only, everything else works.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 oh thanks for the info.

  • really i don´t take photos in low light, but i want a really sharp lens, which of this 3 lens is better in quality for a D90?? ( 1.8 / 1.4G AF-S / 1.4D AF)

  • They're all sharp lenses but different aperture ranges.

  • is there a 50mm 1.8 af-s lens for the d5000?

  • Yes, except it is 35mm in focal length.

  • will this lens autofocus with Nikon D90 ?

  • Again, yep.

FYI, your D90 can focus every lens out there. It's only D40, D40X, D60, D3000, and D5000 that is limited to AF-S lenses only, manual focus for all other lenses.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thanx :D

  • LOL... This "poor man" lens also happens to be one of the sharpest. At f/5.6-7.1 this lens is killer for portraits.

Yeah... it is a good lens for people like myself who can't afford the 1000+ dollar lenses yet.

  • i thougt this was and auto focus lense? isnt tht what AF stands for?

  • Uh, yeah, and?

  • i understand.... i did some research AF-S has the auto focus built in AF doesnt.

  • That is correct. D3000 / D40 / D40X / D5000 / D60 lacks internal focusing motor; to focus the lens automatically, the lens need to have a built in AF-S engine available.

With this lens on these cameras, above, you can still mount and meter will function, however, you will lose the AF capability where you will need to focus the lens manually.

  • Would the Nikon 50mm f1.8 fit on my D300? Do you think there would be any shifting on the cuality?

  • Yes, no problem.

Don't know what you're trying to ask on the last question.

  • The bokeh rendition performance is poor because you can only use it at F/4.0 as the highest aperture for maximum image quality. For the best bokeh rendition performance as possible, look at 50mm ƒ/1.4D AF or 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S and use at F/2.0.

  • Im looking for a new lens. Would this work for my Nikon D50 ?

  • One word answer, yes.

  • Too much chromatic aberration at wide open, which make the images appear extremely soft, in the other words, the images are not sharp.

  • The AF will not work on my d5000?

  • Nope, manual focus only.

  • What can you suggest, as its 75mm on DX then hand shake is noticable, and for best quality i need f/4-8 so this is basicly a tripod lens and for good iluminated enviroments, please correct my if im wrong.

PS is there a lens hood for this lens?

  • Camera-shake is noticeable if you are using shutter speeds slower than 1/80s but no problem on a tripod (you can do longer exposures).

You probably won't need a tripod at these apertures in the daylight and you can always use F/4.0 and crank the ISO up to higher sensitivities when the lighting condition gets darker. But, if you prefer shooting in the dark, look at 50mm ƒ/1.4D AF or 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S.

Yes, a lens hood is necessary and it is a Nikon HR-2 rubber hood, it is about $15 on B&H.

  • i can't wait!

    im getting mine next week!

sadly i can't AF with it.

    thanks for the review.

  • thx so much.... ur videos are reali helpful.... cant thank enough!

  • Does this lens Auto Focus on D90?

  • yes, I got one :)

  • Planning on buying a Nikon d5000. Should I buy the kit lens or get the body only and buy this lens?

New to dslr's... so does it mean that lens with AF-S are the ones with internal focus motor and AF has none meaning all AF lens can only be focused manually on the d5000?

Is manual focusing too much of a hassle?

  • Yes, that is correct, D5000 can focus AF-S lenses automatically while older AF lenses (AF-D, AF-I, or just AF) does not have an internal focusing unit, which requires external focusing assistance from the camera body that D5000 happen to lack one.

With this lens, you are required to focus the lens manually. Hassle? In a well controlled situations, not at all after you practice a lot using electric rangefinder ("focus indicator"). Harder if doing fast action shooting.

  • is the description correct when it says it doesnt have AF for the Nikon D60?

  • Yes, the description is correct. The D60 lacks internal AF motor, which requires you to focus the lens manually.

  • thanks

  • I am planning on getting this inexpensive prime lens for my D90 because of its bright aperture. I want to use this lens for portraits most of the time, which means I will be using f/1.8 to blur the background at 75mm equiv. focal length. But when I read the description you said that it is ideal for large DoF. Does this mean that the lens will not perform well at f/1.8?

    Thank you in advance :)

  • I am afraid that is correct. This lens is designed for using lower apertures from F/4.0 to F/8 (or down to F/16 for FX and F/22 for film). If you wish to use larger apertures with maximum resolution, look at 50mm ƒ/1.4D AF or 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S where F/2 is perfectly useable.

    Good luck.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 review cutout: "...both lenses perform the same from F/2 to F/5.6" Isn't this in contradiction with what you've written above? :)

  • @zwekayah We're talking about some ƒ/1.4 lenses where that aperture range is useable.

  • Thanks! i needed a 2nd handed hight apreture lens and was thinking of this lens now i know what to buy now!

  • It is still in fine shape. All you have to do is press down and HOLD the aperture button (with lens' aperture diaphragm icon on it) while scrolling, the aperture will change on the LCD.

Press the button, hold it down, scroll the wheel while holding it down, when your selected aperture is selected, let go the button.

  • Some of my best pictures have come from this wonderfully cheap lens, i would recommend it to anybody using either a FX or DX body.

  • Get a D50 - lens works fine and they're really cheap!

  • just ordered this lens, can't wait to get it!!!!!

  • which aperture will produce the sharpest image??

  • For DX's, anywhere from F/5.6 to F/8.

    For 35mm and FX's, anywhere from F/5.6 to F/16.

  • Did it even need a hood? frontal glass looks pretty deep inside of tubus

  • Yes, every lenses must have hood on to prevent 75% of the sunlight reflections. People argues lens hood don't make a difference - they haven't took a closer look.

  • does filter thread rotates on focus on this lens?

  • One word answer, no.

  • I just got this lens for my D40x. I don't care that I have to use it on manual mode because this lens kicks butt. So far it's on my D40x 85% of the time.

  • And i'm loving this lens!

  • I picked this lens up from B&H last night and am very well impressed by it's sharpness and value. MUST HAVE for all Nikon SLR owners

  • will it work on d80?

  • Aye.

  • Lovely and cheap.. But i have one question.. Works the auto-focus on D40?

  • Nope, you would need to focus this lens manually on D40, D40X, or D60.

  • i got 50mm just today....

  • Another great review. I got this lens myself and it is amazing. :) Thank you

  • this lens is diamond

  • I didn't know this one did FX sensors too. I supposed the 50 mm focal is based on FX sensors though. What's the effective focal on a DX sensor?

I was considering this lens for the late night skatepark shoots I do often... If it has your go, looks like a good buy.

  • 75mm on a DX sensor.

  • well best lens i had so far. Mainly use for my portrait shots.
