  • well, each to their own, if this is how the American's want Apache, then perhaps it explains why the Shads didn't make it big in the states.... Ouch, it gets worse as it goes along.

  • your shit

  • False advertising!

  • au secours

  • cool i need a man

  • cool i am very talented and open

  • Thats some reverb tone, i now have another guitar i want to own

  • Typical American's Gummy gobs with far more teeth than their mouths can handle...

  • if you guys that sort of music, listen to clasical gas, amazing!

  • ha I'm a crazy American girl

  • sounds much like Jørgen Ingeman - love it, :-)

  • 46 year old guitar sounds like 1000 years off skills

  • Sweet! Theese guys pioneered new sounds with electric guitars ,there just is'nt this kind of talent anymore,

  • best!

  • Amazing version ! I love it !

  • U were great

I like the shadows was that there guitar

  • @Lewiswilson99998876 I am not sure who the guy playing was , but it was not Hank Marvin

  • Great and true talents!

  • He looks like Alan Partridge! Aha!

  • t'est trop fort, franchement respect!

  • Wonderful job. It is incredible how you play both lead and rythym. Thanks for posting!!

  • amazing

  • Man, that's one of the most beautiful guitar's I've ever seen.

  • cool variation!

  • WONDERFUL

  • Bravo

  • I have a '67 Nashville model (got it new in '67). This is one of many including Carvins, Guild, Gretch etc. It is by far the easiest and most expressive ax I own. It never leaves the house. What a sounds, nice guitar and playing man!

    George

  • Great!

But, isn't this more like The Ventures version?

  • RIP Terence "Jet" Harris

  • i love the shadows, and hate song stealers.

but this guy is good, i enjoyed the version.

  • his version is different. theres's always a reason to play an old song!

  • maestro is off tune unless my ears are fucked!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed that! Gorgeous guitar too.

  • Wow. this Guy can play, 5 stars.

    regards Mike, from England.

  • I really enjoyed This cover thanks alot

  • Luuvit:)

  • Goes to show that you don't have to jump around like a fool and abuse your instrument to make music.

  • just have two words to say: FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!

    this old man freaking rocks!

  • Yeah a beautiful guitar to look at. Valiant attempt.

  • yeah man this was great

  • i'm jealous, because i can't play anymore guitar.. i lost few figers from my left hand couple years ago..

  • @honkanen72 Thats horrible! i feel for you. You could try playing bass guitar. My Dad has ectrodactyly which is a faultly gene. he only has one finger on each hand but he can play. hes very good, too and was in a band.

  • i know this song was not written to be played for a bank grand opening...

  • I like Johnny's version even more than the Shadows' because he plays it on a hollow electric guitar that is more in line with the country western doing as the name Apache suggests.

  • awesome, nice cover of Jørgen Ingeman

  • Really great job. Love the guitar, beautiful sound and looks.

  • when he strikes the string with his finger nail, i am afraid cause he is so old that it will come off. Nice cover though. Good fills. Makes it sound like at least two guitars playing.

  • shut up u fucking thick.

  • Nice ..!!!

  • Holy shit.. Amazing guy..

  • Very nice player. Where can I hear more Johnny Long?

  • Brilliant!

  • Love the echo reverb. Nice job.

  • This oldtimer is fantastic.Great timing.Keep on doing the good works.

    Love this 1.

    see ya!

    rock on!

  • Beautiful Gretsch Guitar.

  • Nice version

  • smartsssss

  • like the chet though

  • this is the worst version i have ever heard

  • did anyone ever put lyrics to this song or it's meant to be just instrumental ?

  • I watch his timing, presicion, feeling, and listen to the effects..........................

then i think (why not selling mine on E-bay)

  • streat singers don't have to play by note

  • is it just me or does he miss that very high note several times... for example, at 15 seconds in and 19 seconds in?

I'm a fan of this video, just asking. I see he does the same thing at the end, except he gets the note, finally.

  • Wow Johnny is the real deal...Age brings experience...Such great a talent...Super nice Gretsch he has as well...

  • its only sound from instruments without singer but he doesnt missing there :) finger up

  • Absolutely love this song! I am 60 and remember this song well. One of my favorites.

  • i love my fender strat!!!!!

  • Whoa guy, that was rocking! Great playing and interpretation!! Thank You.

  • Fucking awesome !!

  • Johnny you are great, thank you for all you do!!!! My mom loves to hear you play, I do too, Alan

  • This is not a old person , this is a brilliant guitar master ,who knows how to play ,

  • Excellent guitar skills and unique Gretsch! Johnny Long needs to share some more of his fancy finger work with the YouTube audience.

  • Incredible! Best videos of Youtube are hidden and doesn't have bad comments!

  • What a lovely guitar!

  • YAWN

  • omg!!!! the best.....

  • This is labeled as a Shadows cover, but when he does those "zips" on the E string I'm thinking he had The Ventures' version in mind.

Awesome version. Awesome player. It took me a while to realize that there was no band; just this one guy with a drum machine.

Awesome guitar too. I'm no connisseur, but I'm guessing it might have cost more than my car when I bought it new.

  • @Steakrules He loves his guitars, he has a beautiful fender strat too

  • very nice! bellissimo!!

  • The original hit Apache was by The Shadows. Hank Marvin used a Strat, Vox AC30 and Meazzi Echo unit.

  • thats original!! anyone out there know what effects he s likely to be using? echo etc

apparently analogue echo s better for this type of music?!

ive no effects at mo and would like to know what i need 4 this type of thing. thanks

  • @chezruss:

I'm guessing back in the day they used tape echo with a spring reverb, that's just a guess though.

Another characteristic thing about the tone would be the "trem bar", which makes good use of vibrato.

I hope this helps, I'm sure there's loads of information about how to get this tone.

  • EXCELLENT!!!5/5*****

  • never seen a gretsch with that kind of fret board! nice lookin guitar but he's not gettin the complete tonal possibilities out of that old gretsch

  • this fret board look a lot like the 1962 gretsch model 6132 ,otherwise custom made for maybe what would have or could have been a ``shadows``model.

  • In all respect that was great but you played it wrong. That rocked though

  • you are wright

  • hell yeah grampa!

  • Interesting rendition. Thanks. I liked the sound.

  • My favourite picker's guitar and how well he plays it too.

  • very very powerful and hypnotic

  • My guitar is very much like that one except for the 2nd button on the top - It's a Guiatone! As for the song, well... far from the original, but still... that's his version!

    Well done =)

  • very nice .. good song

  • Thank you for thsi video - I am from Denmark and know this version originally by Jørgen Ingmann. He and his wife won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1963 with "Dansevise"

  • awesum!! Better than the original!!

  • Yes! who is this male??????

  • old people rule

  • you mean "oldER" ;-)

  • Who is this guy?

  • love the song!! good job

  • It's an instrumental not a song. There are no words.

  • Sounds good with all the open strings.

  • Nice... :D

  • Johnny, just you with delay chrous fabulous its 2009 you played it like its needs to be played

  • You are very good!

  • No offence, but your kinda raping the song by changing it...

  • Begining is wrong

  • hees a great guitarist, but should of played the original song, you shouldent change such a classic song. =[

  • not good and not bad it isn't original song

  • It's good to hear a variation on the Shadows original.

Credit to the guy I say ... What's the point of playing an exact replica of Hank's version?

  • @RickyBonar Exactly!

  • @RickyBonar. There are times when you do your own version and times when you leave it to the original!! Has anybody ever done a decent version of Jimi Hendix's "All Along the WatchTower"? Absolutely NO!! And nobody can imitate the Shadows and get it right!! Leave it to the original and stop trying to pretend you can do it as good!!

  • no mames pinche pro

    taca bn chingon ese wei

  • Well played Sir, I wouldnt take to much notice of the armchair critics, I very much doubt they know one end of a guitar from the other,

    Mike J (England)

  • But armchair criticism is what makes life worth living^^ Really tho, this is great!

  • the bloke can play, and he was doing the version that did well in the states, not the way hank plays it.

  • hey give him a chance he is trying

  • That nail thing he does goes right through me. I was going to be positive because of all the putdowns below but sod it I felt like punching him myself by the end.

  • and what kind of music your playing, may I ask?

  • Ok, it's a bit shakey, he's not a pro player, but I do like the tone he's getting with that 6120 & echo etc. Johnny, is it really 46 years old, it looks so new?

  • yeah man. we know what delay is!

  • you'r sucker.this is a great song and you killed this song

  • this sounds off , too fast in parts, too slow in parts.

  • This was excellent. While the backing track was a bit too fast, this guy did a lot of things way beyond the old standard boring way everybody and their brother plays it. So what he was off slightly in a couple spots...There are valid reasons for this happening. If he had a good drummer and bass, and slowed it down a notch he would rule. I it give 5 stars on a great interpretation of this song.

  • I for one thought this was very good ,it was played in his own style, and good for him, lots of ideas going on compleatly different, and a joy to listen too, outstanding performance, best wishes Brian

  • dude. . u need a metronome! and this sorta killed the shadows one!

  • This guy has awful timing.

  • What a master, Hendrix would approve I'm sure.

Except for the fucking banker promo. Dragging the banker

behind my pickup truck with this music playing,..aaahhh

  • You have the guitar, now get the rhythm section.

  • this version sucked . :(

  • good go mate, but not as good it could be, go shadows woo :D

  • You have to have been a kid

in the 60s to really get this.

Dont trust anyone under 40? heh heh

  • Love the Gretsch. Great song. Ditch the chorus effect though, it sounds all wrong.

  • Nah, chorus always gave a special feel.

  • Get a Strat mate!

  • Why? Gretsch is fine also.

Could go with a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar.

  • sweet riff u got their mysterieman

  • fantastic

  • hes playing whit way much ecco listen to the original

  • Nice I love clean guitar sound .but hat distortions sound .

  • good job.....

  • thats one beautiful guitar

  • Magnifique...

  • trop fort l animal ! ! ! ! ! a voir absolu

  • BRAVO!! fantastic!!!

  • Oh God, he is fantastic!!!

I am a guitar player and a big Shadows fan, so it makes me feel in the 7th heaven. Who is he? I'd like to play with him!

George "Big Bear" from the Czech rep.

  • Really nice tone!

  • I really love playing Gretsch hollow-bodies, they just have this great acoustic feel and a cool sound.

    I should get a full-size hollowbody.

  • OK until all that silly Ventures gimmick tweeking

  • Ca c'est pas mal du tout...

  • Person with the camcorder jump in a lake. show all of the guitar! nitwit.

  • wow wot a beautiful Gretsch. that is an amazing sounding guitar. love the version. awesome job.

  • lol i was just going to text that i thought it was a brian setzer nashville gretsch. a nice rockabilly ax huh

  • It's a 6120.

  • What a trip.... lord have mercy!

  • Damn i Love that slide 1:33

  • Wow. Great stuff. Thanks.

  • What the hell is that??

  • thats a great version of that tune !!!!!!

  • It's amazing!

  • Old man has lighting in his finger tips! Wow what an axe!

  • Now here's a good creative version.

  • i don't really care for it

  • Awesome! I just wish the camera had panned out just a little to catch the left hand.

    Five stars nonetheless!

  • good sound

  • That was excellent!

  • good too much delay but good and nice gretsh

  • he's no Hank B Marvin, but it's a good rendition.

  • He's no Bert Weedon either.

  • Is this by any chance Les Paul playing? Great music,! It's too bad the cameraman didn't see his shadow during the last minute.
