I just watched "Miracle" on TNT and it always brings me back to this game. I came as i did often with a buddy who was a longtime Kings fan. I wore an Edmonton Jersey to this game just to tick him off a lil but was not an Edmonton fan. After the game i tied a jersey sleeve to the back bumper of my car and dragged it (took about an hour to get outta the parking lot) we made it into the LA Times sports section the next day for that little stunt. Wow what a night. Good times
Dang.. Surprised.. I saw the Kings game today, Against the Phoenix Coyotes . Great high scoring game. Of course the Kings won.. But it was good to see Daryl because my mom knows him(:
I was there. I've never experienced anything like it before or since. I was next o Kings owner at the time Jerry Buss's box and saw him get up and leave after it was 5-0. lol After the game, we were in the parking lot listening to the replay of the goals on radio, and Bob noted all the cars honking their horns on every King's goal. It was an awesome night.
Thanks, it was refreshing to see these highlights featured in a commercial during the NHL playoffs this year. With that said, last night the Kings blew a 4 goal lead, the second biggest blown lead in NHL playoff history.........to THIS!
This was the first year I became an Oiler fan, I still am. Interestingly, I believe this painful learning lesson helped make the Oilers what they would become. It toughened the Oilers up and prepared them for battles to come. Hockey is a great game cause you never know what will happen. Cheers everybody!
I remember Oilers goalie Grant Fuhr had his mask painted for first two games in Edmonton...then it was all white for game 3 in L.A...may have been a good luck thing! Considering what happened that night, he should have left the paint job on!
I'm 50 today (as of June 6, 2010), and I can still remember listening to this game on the radio as a teenager in So' Cal'--and probably the biggest L.A. Kings fan around, since the team stunk up the Forum for so many a season--while my family was fast asleep, though I woke my Dad up sometime after ten that night when the Kings scored the third goal with still plenty of time to play. Years later (1990), I had the thrill of interviewing Mr. Bob Miller there at the Forum for broadcasting school.
I didn't know anything about hockey at the time, so I wasn't surprised when the Kings came from five goals down to tie with 5 seconds left. In fact, I loudly predicted that they would score their sixth goal in the last five seconds of regular time. After all, I explained, in this same Fabulous Forum, Jerry West had won many games in the last 5 seconds, so why couldn't the Kings?
Well, they let me down in the last five seconds, but made up for it by winning in overtime.
I'm currently a Flyers fan in Philly and what a playoff run they had. Down 3-0 games to Boston AND 3-0 in game 7, thrilling ride. Witnessed Game 6 of the Finals, ran out of mojo, then beheld the Cup in person, quite the consolation prize. Even Barry Melrose stated the Flyers could have had the Finals swept with a few bounces, but the Hawks figured them out....faster, younger, enjoy it Chicago, may be another 49 years.
@dillweed23 yeah but the flyers are dirty players ... just like there fans ... i never disliked a fellow canadian before in my life, but i can't stand chris pronger he is a greasy hockey player ... doesnt mean he is a bad person, and its not like philly civilians are bad people either ... i just dont like there hockey team hahahahaha
I was there. My Kings fanatic friend who obtained the tickets for us got up and left to beat the traffic with 18 minutes to go and the Oilers up 5-0. He heard the roar of the first Kings goal while he was in the tunnel, stopped, thought about going back, then went home.
I don't think Gretzky would've been as great if he had to deal with modern goalie equipment. Look at all the room players have to score. Give a modern pro that same chance and Gretzky's records will fall.
@Snapscape Ya, but how many more goals would Gretzky have if things if two-line passes were legal and things like obstruction hooking were called? It's kind of scary how many more points he would have if they called as many power plays when he played as they do now.
I will say though, I hated his guts when he played for the Oilers and had mixed emotions when he came to the Kings for sure.
I heard that when it was 5-0, Oilers Dave Lumley skated by the Kings bench and said "You guys call this a powerplay?". Gretzky has said that the Oilers were booing the Kings Powerplay. At about the same time Kings owner Gerry Buss got up and went home. This is also the series where the Edmonton sports writer called them Weak need wimps after Oilers lost the final game 7-4. Oilers must have learned something because they went to the Finals the next 3 years.
@oilerfanatic1 And they won the Cup in '83, 85, 87, 88 and 90. Kings?
Don't feel so glum. They beat the Kings 3 straight in 85, 4-1 in '87 (Remember 13-3 in game 3 of THAT series), 90, 91, 92...
This happens in Hockey. Leafs in 2001, Rangers in 2009. Heck, Boston in '71 had a 5-1 lead late in the second period and Montreal scored 6 unanswered goals!
Whoaaaa! Thanks for posting this, I have heard of this game and always wanted to see it. I'm so glad that the KINGS have the best come back win in Stanley Cup history!
the 5 people of the 16005 was my family. we remember there were oiler fans sitting right in front of us. and they had their flags waving for most of the game. the flags were waved less and less as the third period went along....
I was one of the 16,005 people who was at this game--at least at the start. I was a season seat holder who also got tickets for two of my buddies who ended up leaving after the second period. I stayed. They wished they had. No other sporting event that I have ever witnessed matches the experience that I enjoyed that night back in '82.

the Bernie Nicholls "pumper-nickel" was after he scored an empty net goal in Game 1 to clinch a 10-8 win. This was a wacky memorable playoff series because of the end to end offense.
There was more action in one game of this series than there was during complete NHL seasons of neutral zone trap defence mastered New Jersey and Dallas and copied by every team from 1995-2005, except for Colorado with Sakic and Forsberg.
bob miller and nick nickson good for LA -real people very kind- spend many nights in the 80s listening to 570 am klac and the mighty 690 am -khj channel 9 -when their were only 12 games a year televised
What's ironic is that Messier missed a chance to win the game in OT, and he went his whole career without ever scoring a playoff OT goal. But Daryl Evans scored one.
I love watching great old school hockey moments with the crowd blocking the view of the camera. If that ever happened, you KNEW something big just happened.
Absolutely Indy Fan. Even though Staples has better acoustics, and no mold growing on the walls, the Kings had real fans when they played at the Forum. Of course, the team stunk then too for the most part but there wasn't the corporate atmosphere whee the objective was to suck as much $ out of the fans' pockets as possible.
I hope you mean never surpassed in LA Kings Plat by play...he certainly cant be compared to the likes of legends like Gallivan,Kelly,Hewitt, McDonald, Cole. Miller was OK but he was not one of the greats...IMO. And his side-kick Nick Nickson was a joke. Oh well we all have our favorites...twas a amazing night to witness none-the less. I was a Flames fan and went to the game with two school buddies who were big Oilers fans...they were inconsolable, the whole drive back to Santa Barbara.
i remember listening to the game on the radio because my mom wouldnt let me stay up. by the time of the winning goal i think the whole neighborhood was awake ,i went NUTS greatest moment in kings history
Actually they faced the Canucks in the next round and lost 4 games to 1..the same year the canucks went to finals against the Islanders. Back then they played out their divisions for the first two rounds of the playoffs...1st vs 4th and 2nd vs third in the first round in a best of 5 then the winners in the Division finals in a best of 7.
I wasnt all that hot on this era of Kings Uniforms...I prefered the pre 1980 uniforms without the shoulder stripes...but they are certainly better than the ugly things they have now...the black and silver were nice...should have kept them
Marcel Dionne is a player that should get 100 times more respect than he does.If he played in any other city he would be a top 5 greatest player on everyone's list.
Steve Bozek was a rookie for the Kings for the Miracle on Manchester. He played for Calgary in '86 when the Blues had their Monday Night Miracle. Two miracles in one career, not bad for the former NMU Wildcat.
this was game 4 i believe oilers had a 2 games to 1 series lead kings tied it with dis win and won it in edmonton bernie nicholls had a had trick in a 7-4 triumph
I think it was game three actually...They split the first two in Edmonton (one of them being a real high scoring game) the Oilers came back and won game four (I was studying in California at the time and went to lots of Kings games including games 3 and 4 of this series) then The kings won the series in Edmonton...back then the opening round was a best of 5
Not really, considering how they played last year. They had a great game last night versus Chicago and have a chance to get into the playoffs. I am a Detroit fan, but I wouldn't be suprised to see LA make the playoffs in the 8th spot.
I met daryl evans, at the toyota sports center, during training camp. he is a real nice guy, real approachable. he talked to some friends and I for like 1/2 hour. Talked to us about hockey. signed some autographs.
Give the fans some credit as well; most of them stuck around to watch the game and cheered them throughout the third period, even while the Kings were hopelessly down.
The kicker: Kings would go on to finish the series upset. Truly a remarkable game, followed by an equally remarkable series win.
would love to have the first game on DVD, what was it? 10-8 for the Kings. both teams could score, not just the Oilers but the Kings as well. people tend to forget that. and you cant forget that edmonton's defence was quite lousy at this point. it wasnt until the 1983 playoffs when they started playing solid defence. did anyone notice Glen Sather smiling on the bench after the Kings scored to make it 5-2 Oilers? LOL I found funny in a way because it was the Kings who had the last laugh.
i love the celebrations the kings were heavy underdogs in this series i wish i could get all 5 games on dvd-i will pay some $ for it....someone in this world gotsa have it-as far as im concerned this was the greatest stanley cup playoff series ever!
that is amazing...i was born in 1990 so ive never seen this until now...wow i thought the comeback vs. dallas last year was great, it doesnt come close to that
One of the greatest moments of my childhood. The only thing better than wiping that arrogant smile off of Glen Sather and Wayne Gretzky's face was nothing! I hated Gretzky at the time for getting all the coverage while playing with an all-star team while Marcel Dionne got no pub. Dionne had no talent around him, and still managed to put up epic numbers. I wonder what he would have done with Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Anderson and the like... He did have Steve Bozek though...LOL!
astounding im crying right now everytime i see it i cry tears of happiness my pops had season tixs to los angeles kings throughout da 80s this was the best time to be a kings fan its a joke after they lost the '93 finals to montreal but they have always had awful scouting some very costly trades too....makes me sick
this was a very very special time in my life my pops got me into hockey heavily i was 9 years old he took me to many kings games in da 80s a season ticket holder it was an astounding feeling driving with pops and seeing the fabulous forum glossy white coming down the freeway or street- those were special times in my mind as the best childhood memories
Black and silver is what LA wants. Shops are just not carrying Kings garb anymore, You would think the Raiders were still here. The post Gretzgy colors are nice but not what this city wants. ESPN dropping the NHL hurts worse. LA has forgotten this team. We are no better now than a few years after the expansion. Real sad in this market.
I remember watching this game when I was 10 years old. You figure the Oilers coulda got a couple in the third period and won this game. I really think they could have won the Stanley Cup in 1982 if not for this game!
I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but there's no way the Oilers win the Stanley Cup in 1982 if they would have beaten the Kings because they would have faced the Islanders in the Finals. The Islanders won 19 consecutive playoff series from 1980-84, and 2 of those series wins were against the Oilers, and in '82 the Oilers were too immature and overconfident to win it all, thus they got beaten by a Kings team they shouldn't have lost to. 1980-84 NEW YORK ISLANDERS GREATEST NHL TEAM EVER.
True about that. Oliers' Head Coach at the time (and now Pres./GM) Glen Sather was always such a huge cocksucker, and Oilers owner Peter Pocklington was his (and still is) his little bitch, as a proud Kings fan since 1975 (circa Rogie Vachon, Butch Goring and Marcel Dionne), I can definitely say that.
Too bad this video clip was edited by the guy who edits the Chinese martial arts flicks with the uneven audio and video track. Besides how did Kimberly Ann Denison do in the beauty pageant...lol.
I tried googling Kimberly Ann Denison, and all sorts of links to this video came up, as well as some other shit, but nothing related to that beauty pageant appearance. BTW, when WAS that pageant, she looks HOTT in that 80s-style "big hair", I wonder what she now looks like here in 2007
@mikethespike75 ...yah, he always looked ancient. I could swear he looked like a withering pale ghost behind the Red Wings bench. Maybe the Wings could have supplied him with a tanning bed in his office. It could very well have helped his playoff record with them!
I was a Kings season seat holder at the time and unfortunately left the game after the 2nd period! This is the only NHL game I've ever left early and I've been at a few hundred of them.
That was such a marvellous comeback. I remember how thrilled I was for the Kings. They had a disappointing regular season; but then they gave Gretzky and those hot-shot Oilers their comeuppance.
I watched game four of this series; televised nationally here in Canada. I loved how the fans got into it...and chanted 'Gretzky sucks'.
It boggles the mind to look into the faces of the players and fans and realize they're all twenty-five years older now.
This is my second favorite moment in hockey history next to the 1980 Olympic Teams 4-3 win over the Russian Red Army. Just an incredible win for the Kings! The Purple and Gold Jerseys are still the best!
This was indeed the greatest moment in Kings history up to that point till they got Gretzky 6 years later. And to beat one of the greatest goalies, Grant Fuhr, simply incredible. Thanks for posting this.

Love those Kings uniforms. They were best the NHL has ever seen.
dynamic717 2 years ago
I wasnt all that hot on this era of Kings Uniforms...I prefered the pre 1980 uniforms without the shoulder stripes...but they are certainly better than the ugly things they have now...the black and silver were nice...should have kept them

Marcel Dionne is a player that should get 100 times more respect than he does.If he played in any other city he would be a top 5 greatest player on everyone's list.

Steve Bozek was a rookie for the Kings for the Miracle on Manchester. He played for Calgary in '86 when the Blues had their Monday Night Miracle. Two miracles in one career, not bad for the former NMU Wildcat.

this was game 4 i believe oilers had a 2 games to 1 series lead kings tied it with dis win and won it in edmonton bernie nicholls had a had trick in a 7-4 triumph
discoprescription 3 years ago
I think it was game three actually...They split the first two in Edmonton (one of them being a real high scoring game) the Oilers came back and won game four (I was studying in California at the time and went to lots of Kings games including games 3 and 4 of this series) then The kings won the series in Edmonton...back then the opening round was a best of 5

Not really, considering how they played last year. They had a great game last night versus Chicago and have a chance to get into the playoffs. I am a Detroit fan, but I wouldn't be suprised to see LA make the playoffs in the 8th spot.

I really think they could have won the Stanley Cup in 1982 if not for this game!
mojoman998 4 years ago
I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but there's no way the Oilers win the Stanley Cup in 1982 if they would have beaten the Kings because they would have faced the Islanders in the Finals. The Islanders won 19 consecutive playoff series from 1980-84, and 2 of those series wins were against the Oilers, and in '82 the Oilers were too immature and overconfident to win it all, thus they got beaten by a Kings team they shouldn't have lost to. 1980-84 NEW YORK ISLANDERS GREATEST NHL TEAM EVER.
ericthegoalie31 3 years ago
Amazing! So, Grant Fuhr and Wayne Gretzky were beaten when they were winning 5x0? And the Oilers coach laughing when it was 5x2...Let´s go Kings!!
About the jerseys...I like them all...
But if I had to choose, I would be undecided between the black and white ones or the purple and yellow...
Both of the 2 rocks!
lipemcsorley 4 years ago
True about that. Oliers' Head Coach at the time (and now Pres./GM) Glen Sather was always such a huge cocksucker, and Oilers owner Peter Pocklington was his (and still is) his little bitch, as a proud Kings fan since 1975 (circa Rogie Vachon, Butch Goring and Marcel Dionne), I can definitely say that.

I was a Kings season seat holder at the time and unfortunately left the game after the 2nd period! This is the only NHL game I've ever left early and I've been at a few hundred of them.
meee223 5 years ago
That was such a marvellous comeback. I remember how thrilled I was for the Kings. They had a disappointing regular season; but then they gave Gretzky and those hot-shot Oilers their comeuppance.
I watched game four of this series; televised nationally here in Canada. I loved how the fans got into it...and chanted 'Gretzky sucks'.
It boggles the mind to look into the faces of the players and fans and realize they're all twenty-five years older now.
