The most amazing thing about this catchphrase is that it was met to be a "throw-away" line not as infamous as it has become. But...because Esther Rolle was such an amazing actress and the incredible amount of regret and emotion she put into those words, she made it memorable for decades and generations to come. This is what acting is all about...making the unbelievable believable. RIP Esther Rolle.
@laurelfan1 ......its a tv show. YOU grow up. she acted this out damn well, very released, but her voice is whats funny. not the situation. didnt think i needed to explain that.
@laurelfan1 if it were real no. probably when u first saw it, no. but 10+ years out, it is. if its not to u, i dont care. everybody is different. if u say "this isnt funny" im not going to tell u.. "why yes it is". move on good man, i dont agree with u. good day
The act behind it isn't funny, but I do wish she could've expressed it differently because it SOUNDS funny. Especially after Fresh Prince took this scene and ran with it. >_>
flo finally broke down...i wish i couldve gave her a big ol hug. i would have liked to live in the evans apt in the ghetto. no money, but plenty of love. so not like my own family.
Lol I remember on thanksgiving I dropped my food all over the floor and I was like yams yams yamsss everyone was laughing I was too until I realized I had to clean it up but it was all good
When my parents passed away it hit pretty hard at first. But after a short while i accepted the fact they were in a better place.Az i type this on Christmas day i admit it suckx theyre not here with me but im glad to know theyre spending Christmas together in heaven.Thats what alwayz gets me thru every special holiday.
still a tear jerker after all these years.. We all can relate... They dont make shows like this anymore... You actually learned something watching good times...
@wizfan92301 Because, though I can't understand why anyone would think the scene is funny, apparently you and some others do. Perhaps when you lose someone close to you, you will no longer feel that the scene is so funny anymore. Though it's fictional, the scene is very realistic and race has nothing to do with it. I'm sorry for the comments that I made and that's why I deleted them. If it's funny to you then it's funny to you.
@5allanleeclemons5 absolutely not, a white boy like me will be the first to admit this was the saddest episode on TV and race aint got a damn thing to do with it. I give credit that the show still had some strengh after this episode and I watched it right to the end when they moved to a new location. Norman Lear was a true genious of TV no doubt.
Probably the most poignant, of the entire series, or even of any series of the time. Even better than the Black Jesus episode or the episode about the neighbor abusing her daughter. I remember watching to tv when it originally aired.
She was trying not to let her emotions about the death of her husband get to her. And just finally she couldn't hold it in anymore. Classic scene. I think almost everybody has had a "damn damn damn" moment. When at first you don't cry, but later on it just comes out of nowhere.
i THINK THE COSBYS WAS A GOOD SHOW IT SHOWED THAT NOT ALL BLACKS WERE IN THE"GHETTO" THERE ARE SUCCESSFUL BLACK FAMILIES BUT GOOD TIMES MORE BLACKS AND PPL IN GENERAL CUD IDENTIFY WITH THAT IDEA OF STUGGLE AND TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THE WORLD
I agree. Im a huge fan of the show and watch the reruns everyday on Antenna TV. this scene gets me choked up. Reminds me of the scene in MASH where Radar walks into the ER to tell them that Colonel Henry Blakes plane was shot down. Damn fine acting on those old shows you just don't see these days...
You can feel the passion from this brief scene in her eyes and soul.... Florida Has the best actors i.e, Ester Rolle, Angela Bassett. Wesley Snipes,etc.... if you haven't been through that you really wouldn't understand... @darkwolf9408 It's no BS. This was sublime acting by Esther Rolle. Florida is trying to stay in control and in charge by showing how strong she is but she's can't keep up the charade and finally has to give in to the emotions and let her family support her. Hell, it's just 50 seconds but I started crying when she finally crumbled and gave in...
@GiantDoucheNG but I say they really were pissed off. The acting of Michael, Thelma, and Florida is actually genuine since killing off James was the shock of the show.
It's OD funny now but I do remember watching this as a kid and thinking "my world is going to end". It was really the first time I had heard a black woman say what my grandparents called a "bad word" on regular T.V.
@CraziiBeautiiful42 i agree when i was a kid about 7 years old in the mid 80s i remember watching this episode a rerun by then of course i caught the last half of it and didn't understand what had happened and when the Damn damn damn part came on i started busting up laughing but i didn't know she was sad Because her Husband died at the time lol. but now that i know what this episode is about i can't really take it serious because i always remember how i laughed so hard in the 80s .
