I think its because the 'bell curve' is meant in one OR both of two ways

1: the mathmatical meaning

2: the 'bell shape' women have and don't want

so it sounds like hes talking about maths and/or the womans figure, which women probably take as sexist (less female laugh + more men laugh)

Besides the song actually is very sweet towards her, he does after all say that her love is one in a million, and that she is the only love of his life - the point of the song is to point out: that finding love, is mathematically probable.
