  • while you Yanks were cruisin' in your 409's etc we brits were driving Austin A35's (google it) with about 10hp and a top speed of about 55mph. And yes it pisses down with rain here most of the time.

  • @cavanfan Yeah, back then you could go to any dealership and buy a new Super Stock car, 409 Hp and up. At a reasonable price. Like the song says, I had to save for a down payment, so I could afford the monthly's. I don't think I could live with a 10 Hp car. I'd be looking for a used Merlin for it and some welding rods.

  • First time I heard this song, I was just 6 yrs old....now I'm 49 and still a classic song by the 'Boys.

  • this is a good song

  • I sit in my car singing giddy-up... 122?

  • who is gonna do a song about my 1.6 liter engine?

  • @steelyspielbergo Ok here we go!! Same tune but different words :) She's real slow my 1.6. She's real slow my 1.6, my 1.6... Well, I save my pennies and I hocked my shit. I must really be outta my mind. Fore, I knew there would be a time... I must really be outta my mind. When I would buy a lame ol' 1.6! :)

  • @AndyANiceGuy sounds about right

  • A 348 BTW, with 409 heads would be a fine running engine. Many people underestimate the 348. We had a stock class 348 running right with GTO's back in the day.

  • giddy up 327....... ;)

  • A 1961 Chevy with a 409 is a rare find.Great picture of the red one in the first photo.Great video to go with a great song and a great engine.Thank's for posting.

  • @cacjy6b 409 came out mid year 1961.348 and 409 parts don't interchange.

  • @wafrederick I was under the impression that 409 heads would fit a 348 block, if a 409 manifold is used. I know Edelbrock makes/made 348-409 Aluminum Heads (#60819) and claims the same. Don't know about clearances, but that's easily dealt with. They are pricy @ $1,050.00 each, but everything is nowadays.

  • @whodoneit9723 The mid year 1961 409 blocks were bored over 348s,did not last and were used in Nascar blowing up.My father has a 1962 Chevy Impala 409 Clone,1962 heads and intake and the block is a 1965 replacement block.Checked casting numbers and this is what came up with

  • @wafrederick I don't quite understand your reply and I'm no expert on parts 348 or 409. But I ran a '63 409 in S/S and B/FX (with Aluminum Front End and Z-11 Heads & manifold) back in the day. So I know a little about that end of it. And like I said I'd always heard they would fit. And indeed Edelbrock says they will, at least theirs will.

  • @whodoneit9723

    Hey amigo

were the hell did you get z-11 heads and manifold!!!

there was only 57 z-11 models made and they came with 427 not 409 and yes the z-11 models had aluminam front ends

  • @elchino530 I bought the heads off Nicholson he dropped a valve in his Z-11, got a new set and sold me his for $25. a piece. I had the one welded, the other was fine. I raced for a Dealership back then, and ran pretty good. Good enough to catch the attention of Chevy Engineering. Got the part numbers from them and had the dealer order the Aluminum parts and manifold for me at their cost.

  • @whodoneit9723

woow thats a pretty bad ass story wish i was born back in the 60's!!

  • @elchino530 Yeah, but then you'd be a geezer like me. lol

  • @whodoneit9723

haha i dressed up as a greezer for a car show on halloween this past year!!!

  • @elchino530 BTW, I found the receipt for the Aluminum fenders and hood a few years ago, after my mom had passed. She apparently had saved some of that stuff. Dealer cost on those was $227.45. Ain't that a kick? Hell, I bought the '9 new for $2,700. Those were the days.

  • @whodoneit9723

man if i were too find such a awsome piece i would frame it!!!

i love chevy stuff i go out to old car graveyards out in the creeks and take off emblems steering wheels etc.. and just put them in my room with all my other chevy stuff!! but my mom gets pissed saying why do i keep bring trash into the house lol but well worth it!!

  • @elchino530

also im sorry for your loss.

  • @elchino530 BTW mid '62 some of the well knowns were given (or paid for) The Z-11 heads and manifold pieces, plus Aluminum Front ends for their '62's. Those were 409's not 427's then. The intake valves were moved on the Z-11 heads, but most everyone (I imagine) unshrouded that area anyways so there was no problem with valve to block clearances.

  • @whodoneit9723

    Thanks for the info!!!

well you cant always trust a book. lol

rather listen to someone that has personal expeirnce like your self rather than a book any day thanks again!!

  • 396 could blow the doors off a 409

  • @MrBbrokenbones Whats your point? You're comparing apples and oranges. 396's came out in '65 many later cars were of course faster, but those were in later years.

  • Great song, terrible engine.

  • @VikefanTony The other way around.

  • my favorite car the vintage 409c.i/409hp chevrolet impala

  • im from 1991, but I have to say.. this music is way better then the music nowadays!

  • my dad love this song

  • 15 ppl don't know what the 409 was or is.

  • Takes me back to 1963 and driving a 409 what an engine what a cool Machine. Always fun driving a Bel Air Hardtop 1963 Chevy 409! You could win at the gate with a 348 but the 409 was much quicker off the Line.

  • Go to Rukus in the Summer for a great cover of 409.

  • Kinda sad there are few cars worthy of a song today. Nobody could ever make a Ford Taurus or a Toyota Prius into a decent song......

  • @WALTERBROADDUS CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

  • Wasn't the car sound at the beginning recorded in front of their house or something?

  • @MegaVideogirl99 it was dennis's car

  • not only is the music great the 409 story is heart pounding

  • looks like a 64 or 5

  • @Syzygy60 63 chevy belair.

  • The "four speed, Positraction, daul-quad (two 4bbl. carburetors) 409" was rated by Chevrolet divison engineers at 425 hp. Actually, that figure was probably conservative; it could have been closer to 450 hp with some versions s high as 500hp.

  • What year is that BelAir at the start of the video?

  • 4 barrel carb

  • Get me off, get me off 69

  • great song shitheads

  • i'm only 409 days old, and i like em'.

  • I love all the beach boys music. Lol

  • im only 10 and i like the oldeeees cause my dad listening to these songs alot

  • Just listening to a Beach Boys Greatest Hits album and no 409! What a travesty! One of the best cruisin' songs ever and they leave it off the damn album!

  • This song used to come on at least 3 times a week on "shell radio" when i worked 3rd shifts. I found myself waiting for it many nights wondering if they were going to play it again

  • @5191keith i agree

  • Ah the good old days of 100 octane gasoline as close as your neighbourhood station to feed that high compression muscle.

  • This is my song :D

  • Comment removed

  • Giddy up giddy up 409 :D

  • Bored out 348 chevy truck motor = 409. Use to call them "Stone Crushers" back in the 60's.

  • My older brother Don used to take me to school in one of these. Header dumps. camel heads. It shook the 12x64 trailer we were livin in. baby moon hubcaps chrome steel wheels. unforgettable. 5 block burnouts too.

  • THE CHEVY IN THE PICTURE WAS BEFORE THE 409. IT IS NOT A 409111

    WRONG YEAR.

  • I had a '68 goat w/hedman headers, 850 holley & 4:10 gears.

    Blew everything off Hall Street.

  • love 65 GTO but my 565hp big block camaro would smoke most GTO'S

  • @27cuchillo - what engine is in you Camaro -- what year camaro? i have a 71 firebird formula 400

  • not even a nigger could catch that thing!!!!

  • nothing beats american muscle in looks speed or sheer power

  • @ryouma1717 Just hoping you know that your statement is off..... American cars usually don't get very much horsepower out of their engines. The only very powerful American car I know is the SSC Super Aero which as something like 1100 horsepower, although it is demolished by cars like the Veyron Super Sports, Grand Sports and the Koenigsegg Agera, which hit speeds of 250+ MPH, among others.

  • Comment removed

  • @ryouma1717 yeah! they even say the new ones can actually turn in corners!

  • @GuzChef Most '9's were about Point 'A' to point 'B' racing, in a straight line. If turning corners is your thing, that's fine, most any ordinary car will do.

  • American horsepower at it's best. The 409 plus the Mopar missle 413 as well as the mopar 426 hemi were all great engines during a bygone era where Rock and roll was nothing short of spectacular with every group from The Beach Boys to The Hondells ,The Rip Cordsand Jan and Dean giving there all for Good Time Rock and Roll and great Hot Rod music. Thanks You Tube for helping us relive the best years with the soundtrack of our lives !!!

  • @miketheshanmanmangan i agree well i saved my pennys and i saved my dimes before i knew there would be a timne that i would bye a 409 its true twop

  • @miketheshanmanmangan I like and agree with everything you are saying. I loved my 426 hemi, miss it everytime one of these kids pull up next to me in their 4cyl fuel injected, wirey mess of an engine car.

  • 409 not as fast as my 65 GTO but tuned would smoke any stock 327. I was there....I lived it. Being in tune was critical for any of the muscle cars. My cousin had a 409 that ran in the low 13's...my GTO....high 12's...no BS here!!!!!

  • @starman4463 My 409 ran low 12's. I was there also. As for GTO's back then, a good running one was low 14's. Before the Ram Air option. My buddy had the fastest one around in our area in '65. It ran 14:30's. Good out of the gate but no top end. The stock heads were shit.

  • The 409 smoked the GTO

  • I do believe the GTO was faster then the 409 though

  • summer school 1965,cleveland high in south stlouis mo..heard some rucus in front of the building,,we all ran, inculding the teacher.to the west windows,,lined up side by side was a 64 impala,409 4 speed (ya,they made em)and a 65 chevell 327 4 speed,,ya could hardly see the front of the school for the tire smoke,,the 327 put the 409 in its place that day..

  • flashback, thank you, d..

reminds me of going thru the hills of laguna with my big bro at the wheel giddyup car spin was the thing to do /gas was about 25 cents a gallon before we knew the damage of fuel, the age of innocence, i suppose

  • giddy up giddy up yamaha r6 gidgy up r6

  • Ever since America took the "Lead" out of gas, nothing runs like it used too . .

  • @duqmiguel haha yeah the cars now are about 60% faster and get 3 times the mileage

  • @RockOnJesus47 After decades' worth of technology why wouldn't they be? Musclecars had class. Today's rice have coffee cans for tailpipes. Purely moronic.

  • Can this comment get 409 thumbs up? :D

  • how does capitol records delete the best collection of all time: 'endless summer'?

  • @1skullduggery 409 doesn't appear on "Endless Summer" thats probably why.

  • Comment removed

  • @bchbys damn, you're right...o.k., as long as i have 409, little deuce coupe, fun, fun, fun, this car of mine, i get around, shut down - my favorite 'car' songs by the boys; as well as, help me rhonda, surfer girl, don't worry baby, barbara ann and surfin' safari...in my collection...i'm happy. oh yeah, catch a wave, too.

  • I guess the 15 that don't like the song got out ran by a 409 , hahahaha

  • @hotrodtrucker88 yeah, the desoto just couldn't keep up...

  • Einfach Klasse, alt aber gut!!

    Grüsse Wolf

  • I clean to this song. but what came first, the car they're singing about or the cleaner?

  • @LSA2013 The car. The song came out in 1962.

  • they're playing in my city a day before my brother's birthday! hoping to go for his birthday!!!!!!

  • @catsontheinternet What city are you in? They were just in Minneapolis....love them! Mike Love was interviewed on our local news since his nephew Kevin Love plays for the MN Timberwolves basketball team.

  • @debbiedamooseful im in canada

  • why is there always one person who has to leave a comment about how many people disliked the song fuck em

  • @chanced617

15 people have clearly pissed you off.

    I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

  • BRB...gone to kill 15 people...

  • ... I love this, I was 14 but I wanted a Dodge Hemi ... and I 'll be darned that in 1968 for $700 down and 2 yrs + 10 months of $102 I got a Plymouth Road Runner.. My father 'confiscated' it. ( (He was Prov. RI PD Lt). and I forged his signature.... the worst crime I think I ever could have commited... OH WELL...-)

  • topped with a rochester loaded with cadallac metering rods

  • Thanks for the post.

  • at 0:15...is that mountain home IDAHO...????

  • the most sensational event happened out of Des Plains Illinios Mcdonalds in the fall of 1961. The Black 62 SS 409 with white Headers with dumps where in plain site in the wheel wells. Dumps tri bolted in place as it was moving through the stir of parked power packed iron. A 56 vet flew past our 292 country sedan wagon on Milwaukee ave heading north. Attention getting speed- then the hudge thunder and flames of the 09-dumps open. The race at Des Plains Rd light was amazing- a wheel standing 09

  • '67 SS 396 Chevelle {black on black}---tuuurble machine for a 16 yeare ole' to be a Drivin'....an' yet...Heare I Still be!!! giddy-giddy-uuup--Vaaaroooooom!!!! XD

  • @LHcountryboy1 LOL i love it sweetie lol

  • BEACH BOYS........"NUFF SAID"! TOM D. BRICK,NJ. {AT THE SHORE}.

  • Positraction is GM's name for one of their limited slip difs right?

  • In early 1963 I was in "West-Pac" on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga. The planes in my squadron were numbered 401 through 412. Walking across the hanger deck one day with a buddy, we saw the "blue shirts" (plane pushers) trying to push our 409. The sea was running pretty rough, and they had a hard time pushing it. My bud and I got behind a wing, with about a dozen blue shirts, and started to push the plane. One guy started it, and we were soon all singing "Giddy-up 409." True story.

  • I remember buying my 67 427 4spd chevy Impala for 400.00 had it two weeks and sold it for 850.00 to my friend so he could take the 427 out and put it in his 69 Z28. Now that car is worth a fortune, Damn if I only knew the future. I bet Bill is kicking himself for scraping the Impala!

  • I was born in the late 80's. When I'm in my late 30's I'll be driving a car from the late 60's

  • saved all my money while in Vietnam 65-66, came home and bought my first ever car. 1963 409 4sp. dual quad convertible, black white top red interior. it had 20,000 miles on it and I paid 1800 for it cash. It would really go.

  • Ah, my freshman year at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs, California. It was 1962 and the Beach Boys actually played a free concert in our gym that year. The Chevy "W" head 409 was one bad car, matching up with the Plymouth/Dodge crossram manifold 413 wedge and the tripower 406 Ford. Geez, it was so much fun to be into cars back then (still is now). 4-speed, power shifting, dual quads, posi-traction rear ends, big huge chrome SUN tach on the dash, headrests and chrome rims.

  • My husband and I had a 64 Chevy Impala. Don't know if it was a 409 but I loved it. I LOVE the Beach Boys and all their songs. Their music is beautiful and so are the classic Chevys, Cobras and GTO's. I LOVE the old cars and the old music.

  • @ManCave101FM Hey, I was "stuck" with a '63 Chevy....and a 4 door at that....but I loved it. Loved going to the car shows....especially Back to the '50's at the Minnesota State Fair grounds.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • My older brother used to have a Chevelle SS with a 396 which could snap a person into the back seat when taking off from a stand-still. It had all the "right stuff" like a Muncie transmission, posi-traction, high-lift camshaft, headers, high compression pistons & etc. He wouldn't sell it to me. Unfortunately, the guy who bought, crashed it. A 409 Chevy would have been worthy of saving my pennies and dimes for!! Well, the era of these kinds of muscle-cars is over and only a dream now-a-days:-(

  • @ManCave101FM come on was that the only car in town it was you and a horse and buggy

  • Get me off 69!

  • Rukus at Royal Oak 2011 for 409. Just as good as the Beach Boys!

  • When i was a kid i honestly thought this was about the cleaning product lol

  • i think he means harry pothead fans

  • Great Song, Go to Rukus at Royal Oak 2011 for 409.

  • 409.. like what i use on my stovetop?

  • 15 people dont know what a 409 is

  • @keyten4 For the love of God, can't you let these stupid comments go? Those 15 people know what a 409 is, they just hate the stupid song. Beach Boys weren't even that good until Pet Sounds. STFU!!!!!!!

  • @dominicaalexia1 if you think this song is so stupid than why are you on here commenting/listening to it

  • @keyten4 Easy. I accidentally clicked on it. A better question, though, would be why are you posting the attention whore comment?

  • @keyten4 I don't know, either, but I love this song.

  • why can't all us muscle car people get along? If you wanna go fast its all about american muscle! AMC, GM, Ford, Mopar hell even the old Willys would work for me. There is no replacemnt for displacement, raw horse power. So your honda civic has 1.6 liters my bottle of Mnt Dew has 2.

  • this song is so catchy

  • Hey, granny now we knw who stole your Galaxie!

  • @mgillypie ,I just checked Mr drylander still has it!!

  • Brilliant - the 409 !

  • i remember when my buddy had a chevy 327, with 283 valve covers...often when challenged to race, dudes would want to peek under the hood

  • Dual Quads = Dual Quadrajets = ( 2 ) BIG 4 barrel carbs = 12 /15 mpg (at best) . No problemo when gas was @ $.25 per gallon.... ; )

  • We shut down the 405

  • I love this song! Used to listen to it with my dad when I was younger. There should have been a song for his camero as many burnouts as he did. Brings back great memories! Love you dad!

  • @SuperHolly2008 I used to listen to this with my dad when I was younger too! He also digs Little Deuce Coupe :) Great memories for sure!

  • as of the time of this comment, it is seen that 15 so called ' humans' don't like this video. these strange subspecies live amongst us. they must be found, isolated and rediculed, starting Now.

  • @ddarkshark AMEN

  • That was not the Beach Boys singing, that was God!

  • The 429 came after the 427.the 427 made it's debut in 1963, it was gone by 1967,then came the 428 which was an opened up 390. The 427 came in 4 versions with the last as a two stage "cammer". The 385 series came out in 68 as the 385 series engine and it came in three stages, the last being the 429 Cobra Jet and the 429 Boss,Nascar engine.Ford endured high production costs but made a 427 LeMans engine that destroyed the Ferraris. Ran it 7000rpm around the clock for 24 hours.

  • @raginroadrunner WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT FORD ENGINES DURING A SONG ABOUT THE CHEVY 409

  • If you ever drove a 409 you would never want to drive anything else. Teens today will never get it... We were very lucky and Brian and Mike hit the emotions of the times on the nose !

  • @edwindonaldsnider and the 427 Fords tore them up..

  • @raginroadrunner ford made a 429. Chevy made to 427, so in a sense you are right, the 427 was better than the 409.

  • Comment removed

  • yawn another BORING song about a car...wow how original. Why don't all you grandpas get with the times and listen to JUSTIN BIEBER---GOD of MUSIC!

  • dude, don't mind wakin' up with a horse head inside your bed! - or Bieber head instead. U gay fucking prick!!

  • @KINGDINGLEDORK OMFG DONT FUCKING BRING UP bieber ON A CLASSIC YOU SHOULD SERIOUSLY BE BANNED FROM YOUTUBE

bieber ISNT MUSIC FOR FUCKS SAKE YOU ARE DEAF AND YOU CANT SAY SHIT BECAUSE YOU WERENT ALIVE BACK THEN

  • @memejawd you have been trolled and you took the bait.

  • @drewglis and the funny thing is that I don't really care

haha the loser is stupid, and in today's society there's no cure for ignorance

  • The first time that I drove my big block 4 speed Chevrolet I was grinnin ear to ear for a week.

  • Well there's a few people who bash MikeLove. I don't know why really, but i'll say this. I love the guy's voice and it's really iconic forever part of the American music landscape. I love when i'm going around thruought my life and i hear mike's voice over the speakers..............

  • My muncie 4 speed, dual wcfb, posi 4:11, 348 punched!

  • the 348-409 w blocks were designed as truck motors...so they had to be tuff

  • 14 peeps don't know what positraction is.

  • what's this 409 they singin about? modified chevy 396?

  • @exo6desmo8 396 is a Mark IV design. 409 was a W-block produced from 1960-64.

  • @exo6desmo8 no the 409 was its own beautiful creature

  • Chevrolet, Because they dont make songs about toyotas.

  • Comment removed

  • I wish I could've live back then, the cars, the style, the music

  • 14 people never had anything except Yugo.....

  • Oh I state this because that is what the song is based on, the '63 409 at 425 hp, yes in '63 and yes before the 426 in '64. This is why the song was made because of the '63 409 and yes it did rule the strip from '61 - '64 if not '65, not what happened after the year of 65 because it doesnt matter because the 426 was introduced in '64 and I am sure they didnt hook up until after '65 on the strip!

  • Why are people so dumb, a 409 was introduced in 1961 and ruled the strip, '62 it was rated from 380 - 409 hp, 63 it produced 425 hp, a 426 was introduced in 1964 and rated at 425 hp.. In '65 they replaced the 409 with a 396. Basically, the 409 was middle aged before the 426 even hit the pavement, 1 year after the 426 introduction the 409 was retired! Again, the 409 ruled the strip before the 426 was even thought of, get your facts straight before stating what would out do what!

  • @duane2072 The 409 may have been "middle aged before the 426 hit the pavement, but I wish I had one now!

  • @iamther LOL I am definitely not saying I wouldnt take one as I would. That is one tough engine. I was just saying there trying to compare a 125 dirt bike to a 200 dirt bike. Makes no sense! No kiddin the 426 should win, but the 409 stock was hot on its heels in power.

  • and the Street Races On Woodward.... vVv

  • man my auto shop teacher always talks about the past, how cars use to be... 8 cylinders, carburetors , leaded gas, no SMOG restrictions... i wish i could go back in time and see it for myself...

  • @j1mbOZ31 It was awesome... gas was 23 cents a gallon when I was born until I was about 7, 59 - 75cents a gallon in my 20's (1980's) and when i traveled through texas and oklahoma at that time, independent oil companies had price wars and often gas was 29 to 39 cents a gallon. My favorite car I had back then was my 351C powered 73 Mustang

  • if i had the chance i would like time to take in another beach boy concert as these guys are awesome
