How I would play this chord is by putting my ring finger on the A string, my ring finger on the D string, my middle finger on the G string, and my pointer finger on the B string.

It's describing how to play a chord. It's telling you what fret to put your finger on for each string. X means don't play, and 0 means don't put any fingers on that string . So because guitar tuning in standard goes EADGBe that is also the order of tablature. So you would not play the low E, then play the 3rd fret on the A string, 3rd fret on the D string, 2nd fret on the G string, and 1st fret on the B string.

@TheDogScout E string is closed/muted/not played 3rd and 4th fingers on the 3rd fret of the 4th and 5th string 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string 1st finger on the 1st fret of the 2nd string and the 1st string is open... basically an F major7 with your pinky on the 5th string 3rd fret

@nacster08 Nope...I can't remember what they are. Probably just the stock strings. This was my friends guitar at the time. But then I bought it off him and I believe I put some Martian strings on it. Gotta love Martin. If you have the money, they're great, but strings are strings and they all work.

@rcubedyouthministry I strum them...it basically allows you to be a little more sloppy with your strum. But you won't hear any sound from them. I think its a pretty common thing among guitarists when they play Dmajor.

I just take the rhythm I hear in my head and kind of throw together a strum pattern. When I play covers for people, playing the wrong chords would be a huge mistake, but the strum pattern? @kicksazzallday Well what I'm referring to is on the B string, if you leave it open that note is a B, if you put your finger on the 3rd fret it becomes a D. The three notes that make up a Gmajor triad are G-B-D...so really you can play either. If you ask an older person to play a G, they'll most likely play it without the D, aka just open string B. Its a matter of opinion, but thats why I said that.
