Porter loved her. She was an extremely prepared, polished and graceful performer. Her kind of subtle, dry comedy is the most difficult to bring off but she was a natural at it. She was not a typical beauty but indeed--look close--is a beauty and the camera loved her (she didn't have a bad angle). As a singer she was flawless. She was enormously popular.

I adore Virginia (who doesn't?) but you can tell that Porter wrote it for Betty Hutton (who introduced it in PANAMA HATTIE on Brtoadway).
