I remember the DON'T ASK ME science-show; I somehow saw it in the 1970's in Canada. And that's radical flute-playing, some kind of over-breathing technique because that's not the normal sound you get out of a flute, right?
My primary school got a flute teacher and taught us all how to play the flute. I did not listen to a word of what he said and instead I spent every moment trying to work out how to play it. So finally I learnt how to play it and stood up on a table and played it but then I got rugby tackled by some bastard. Then instead of treating my concusion my school nearly suspended me..
I watched the entire first season of Saxondale thinking the opening theme was by Jethro Tull (you know, moist flute, etc...), but here it is... Focus!
Wow, I never thought I'd hear this again! Also, I had no idea it was Focus until listening to their cd last night. I'm so glad it was reissued otherwise I may never have stumbled back across this. Our local PBS station used to sign on with this song when I was just a kid & I can still remember every flute note. It was frustrating because nobody knew the tune when I'd try to describe it, but now, it's another tune from my yesterday that I've found!
@tonymontana1974 ZOETERMEER NEXT FRIDAY \o/ woohoo 2nd time to see Thijs live, he is still great ! the whole line up is still as epic as ever ! akkerman is a fantastic guitarist for sure, but focus was his best group.
@alzeNL Nice 1 i have never seen akkerman live if you look at my profile videos i have some videos from when focus played preston guild hall last year and i got a front row ticket. Shame the venue was only about half full but yeh focus live have always been great have a good time next friday mate.
Shame on those who only know this as the theme from Saxondale, but at least progs profile was raised by the show and the character..even if he was just a piss take of dinosaurs like me. Especially his views on post Gabriel Genesis....Focus are Gods
I like Focus. First heard songs about 1972. Have four of their albums. I like earliest work best. They are my third favorite Prog after the Mighty YES, then Renaissance.
Just been watching the box-set of Saxondale....the theme music is ace as is the programme ! Very seventies music.....hippy ! I want his Mustang *sobs*.
its not tulll ............its focus, these guys rule and did a lot of did original stufff ...ask tommy saxondale....he was one of there so called,roadies..........
Very original despite many of you going on about it being "Jethro Tullish" That mouth flute sound was pioneered by Roland Kirk in 1958, a good 10 years before the "jazz flute endemic." Thijs Van leer, Ian Anderson, Ian Mc Donald, Lyn Dobson, Jimmy hastings, Bands like Free, Soft Machine,Golden Earring, Renaissance, Quintessence they all used the flute in that context and started off around the same time. So learn about the music before you start going on about how Jethro Tullish this sounds.
13 People don't know good YAZZ FLUTE (Anchorman Quote) when they hear it lol. There wasn't much flute rock out there, so soak it in along with Tull of course.
@MrPaulwaller70 It's hard to say, both coming to the fore in the '70s. Italian prog rock band PFM and Gentle Giant also used flute. Although GG used EVERYTHING!
@Mogggggpiano To make it even more confusing check out the song Dark Rose by Brainbox, Jan Akkerman's (the guitarist of Focus) previous band. This song has a long flute solo as well and is even older.
I am a Jethro Tull fan as well, and all these songs come to show that the flute is a very rock instrument!
@dutchellene Flutes are quite quiet and difficult to amplify. A microphone too near the mouthpiece and all you hear is heavy breathing! But it was at this time that mics got a lot better, maybe that helped flautists come to the fore in rock. I'll listen to Brainbox if I can find something, thanks for the tip. It's worth listening to early 70s Irish band "Fruup", their keyboard player, Stephen Houston, featured the OBOE quite heavily!
Focus fan also. One of my favorite bands. The most simple music is often the most effective and memorable but the hardest to write. Focus combined a memorable melody with a experimental touch to make timeless music. This melody is great plus that little break/solo at 1.27 is beautful. Focus II is still my favorite piece of them but I have all their albums. Akkerman is one of the only guitarists who's solo's could make me emotional/give me goosebumps.
I've always thought it somewhat bizarre that this (flute solo) was written by guitarist Akkerman, and Sylvia (guitar solo) was written by flute player van Leer - especially as they were also A and B sides of the same single here in the UK!
@mixedmeteor Me too, second year uni - Fragile, Lizard, and Focus 3. Focus are much more than just Hocus Pocus, great composers, Thijs & Jan are great musicians. Saw them live in about 73 in Sydney, a great concert.
@Hitman116 I wouldn't say that Focus are better or worse than Tull. The comparison is inevitable because Anderson and Van Leer both play flute but the music that each band has produced differs in so many other ways that it would be unfair to say one is better than the other. Personally, I like both.
Got to admit, though, that this is a good vid. This is the track that got me into Focus so many years ago along with other high profile numbers such as Hocus Pocus and Sylvia.
Always loved this one and yea I remember the program "Don't Ask Me" this was indeed the theme to it - it aired in our country too - down under in New Zealand. Wicked Musicians. ;-)
Seen them twice this year and once a year for the last 4 years. This track stands out for the exceptional sound Thijs extracts from his flute. Better in smaller venues. Great all round show but they are quite heavy.
Just got back last night from seeing Focus headlining the LEGENDS OF ROCK Tour. They were amazing. Van Leer kind of looks like Uncle Bulgaria the Womble, he tripped over some equipment and the sound technician gallantly jumped onto the stage to help him replace the stuff. Didn't ruin the song though. Total pros. A really good evening of prog rock!
Anyone else going to see them on their classic legends of rock tour this year ? i got my ticket seen them live in manchester 2 or 3 years ago they are outstanding live.
I'm debating it. I haven't seen them live, but tickets are expensive and I'm not totally bowled over by the other two acts featured in the tour. Are they any good?
Honestly there 1 of the best live acts ive ever seen there amazing live. Like you im not bothered about the other 2 bands on the bill im just there for focus. Trust me though they are more than worth the ticket price i got a front row ticket to see them in preston in october and im well looking forward to it.
Thanks for the recommendation. I've now booked tickets for November. Ian Anderson this month, Seth Lakeman in October and Steeleye & Focus in November!
FOCUS were "the Art of Noise" of the 1970's... The House of the King was also the "sig" for two BBC Schools programmes in the 70's "Rendezvous France" and "Treffpunkt Deutschland".
From their first album ( in the netherlands In and Out of Focus) drums, Pierre vd Linden, Bassguitar, Cyril Havermans, Organ and Flute, Thijs van Leer, Leadguitar, Jan Akkerman, In the Netherlands they recieved a Edison for this album
It did. I remember hearing from a schools programme called encounter France, Spain and Germany. I thought it was Jethro Tull, till I found out it was from Focus and was used on a Frank skinner programme about an ex rodio turn pest controller. Don't know the comedy programme
Sounds like medieval, like a juice of Pigeon, or salt. Marching with a Court Jester, going to a road-widening bang festival, is the musical reminiscence here. Also, I think this was the theme tune to a school programme here in England. Makes me feel it.
TVL took up flute from age 11 received a degree for its mastery from Geneva Conservatoire and his father was a pro classical flautist before him. Ian Anderson heard Rolank Kirk totally ripped him off for sound and technique. Where is the comparison. Anderson uses incorrect fingering (self admitted)but blows a happy tune. The argument of honor (spelled wrongly) infests youtube. Why cant people accept that good music is a subjective preference. Thicko's look the word up most cant read/write.
@argusgr I love Focus! But you have to appreciate music as a whole! I love all music, but the 'Poor musical days' are also part of my music tastes aswell! I am not being judgemental, but, you have to move on! Accept all music! I like music from Elgar to Napalm Death! Despite the genre, the MUSICIAN. as you put it, still has a passion for his/her particular genre! Music moves on. & you must move with it! ...........Or be left behind! 44 & still loving the music of Focus! ..& Today!
@martynpank lol, i hear ya man... but napalm death? i cant staaaaaaaand the vocalist lol, so its not for me. but i like how you used napalm death in your example:P
@Relix Nice answer! & you are quite right, I use it as an example! Ok, my other analogy is 'From Gregorian Chant to Gabba'!!! I dislike Modern Country. I hate Meatloaf! .....Well, more Jim Steinman! & US poodle rock, such as Jon Bovi!!!! I have a HUGE vinyl & CD collection.......& you won't believe some of the 'Crap' I have!! Actually, listening to 'Glory Road' by Gillan, as I type!!!
@MrNikHuis No, No, No!!! I don't want respect! I know a good tune when I hear it!!! As I may have mentioned. I have a very, very wide taste in music. .....& 'House of the King' is included!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
More of a compliment to Focus. Jethro is far more talented than focus. I mean Ian anderson could give this guy a whooping in rock flute. Focus is still good though.........just not as good af Jethro!
well...Ian Anderson is fantastic and I love Jethro Tull but I'm not sure that he's better, technically speaking, than Thijs Van Leer, not in the 1970 at least...it's obvious that both the two learnt everything from Rolad Kirk...
Love Focus, love this song, glad to see it up here, but they look so sedate, did someone slip tranquilizers in their water?
Seriously, it is very nice to see these old favorites, I used to have bout 3 of these guy's albums and the melodies are still there for a long time and just came back, every note! Fantastic!
mint, got anymore focus live vids?

The science program that used this was called 'Dont Ask Me' (ran from '74 to '78)
The comedy show about the ex-roadie was with Steve Coogan (not Frank Skinner) and was called Saxondale

OMG they did this song!!! I forgot this song existed. Love the melody.

@argusgr hey man if u listen to European folk metal there are really good musicians playing amazing instruments
dietroch5150 1 year ago

Relix 1 year ago
@Relix Nice answer! & you are quite right, I use it as an example! Ok, my other analogy is 'From Gregorian Chant to Gabba'!!! I dislike Modern Country. I hate Meatloaf! .....Well, more Jim Steinman! & US poodle rock, such as Jon Bovi!!!! I have a HUGE vinyl & CD collection.......& you won't believe some of the 'Crap' I have!! Actually, listening to 'Glory Road' by Gillan, as I type!!!

@martynpank
respect for your way of respecting the musicians
MrNikHuis 1 year ago
@MrNikHuis No, No, No!!! I don't want respect! I know a good tune when I hear it!!! As I may have mentioned. I have a very, very wide taste in music. .....& 'House of the King' is included!

More of a compliment to Focus. Jethro is far more talented than focus. I mean Ian anderson could give this guy a whooping in rock flute. Focus is still good though.........just not as good af Jethro!
smellybutts3 3 years ago
I guess/I am sure English selfwanker never listened to all Thijs van Leer's records..
okkith64 3 years ago
well...Ian Anderson is fantastic and I love Jethro Tull but I'm not sure that he's better, technically speaking, than Thijs Van Leer, not in the 1970 at least...it's obvious that both the two learnt everything from Rolad Kirk...
gattazzogrigio 3 years ago
I have to second you on that. Ian is the king of the flute and rock music in general. Focus is still brilliant though

lo mejor de la musica es como estar en una estrella y ver el mundo desde alli, fumando algo suave y tomando un buen vino blanco

I saw them on a recent UK gig - they are still great and quiet mad - but you need to be to play such eccentric rock music :)

Love Focus, love this song, glad to see it up here, but they look so sedate, did someone slip tranquilizers in their water?
Seriously, it is very nice to see these old favorites, I used to have bout 3 of these guy's albums and the melodies are still there for a long time and just came back, every note! Fantastic!
