  • mint, got anymore focus live vids?

  • The 70s! Ready Brek adverts, Spangles, Jackanory, Tank tops, and The Tomorrow People.

  • I remember the DON'T ASK ME science-show; I somehow saw it in the 1970's in Canada. And that's radical flute-playing, some kind of over-breathing technique because that's not the normal sound you get out of a flute, right?

  • Have you seen the tv show Saxondale? This is the theme music. Funny show, if you get the 70s music references, nah, wrong, funny show all the same:)

And what a fantastic melody, it just soars over the clouds! Happy music!!!

  • My primary school got a flute teacher and taught us all how to play the flute. I did not listen to a word of what he said and instead I spent every moment trying to work out how to play it. So finally I learnt how to play it and stood up on a table and played it but then I got rugby tackled by some bastard. Then instead of treating my concusion my school nearly suspended me..

But it was WELL WORTH IT:D

  • @froandabanjo Great story that!!

  • @froandabanjo Ah the joys of mastering a piece of music only to be f*cked over by some meat head twit. Happy Dayz.

  • me hace acordar al juego de sega "sunset riders" (sega video game)

  • Reminds me of Camel's 'Rhayader'

  • House of The KIng was the opening theme and Hocus Pocus was the closing theme

    So FOCUS all the way

I am watching the Saxondale DVD's now - they are brilliantly funny !!

  • Comment removed

  • I watched the entire first season of Saxondale thinking the opening theme was by Jethro Tull (you know, moist flute, etc...), but here it is... Focus!

  • Drummer looks well impressed. This was also the theme music for Saxondale in the UK starring Steve Coogan, a much underrated comedy.

  • Wow, I never thought I'd hear this again! Also, I had no idea it was Focus until listening to their cd last night. I'm so glad it was reissued otherwise I may never have stumbled back across this. Our local PBS station used to sign on with this song when I was just a kid & I can still remember every flute note. It was frustrating because nobody knew the tune when I'd try to describe it, but now, it's another tune from my yesterday that I've found!

  • also tv show for schools encounter france

  • TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNE!!!!!!!

  • If you get a chance go see em live there still a great live band.

  • @tonymontana1974 ZOETERMEER NEXT FRIDAY \o/ woohoo 2nd time to see Thijs live, he is still great ! the whole line up is still as epic as ever ! akkerman is a fantastic guitarist for sure, but focus was his best group.

  • @alzeNL Nice 1 i have never seen akkerman live if you look at my profile videos i have some videos from when focus played preston guild hall last year and i got a front row ticket. Shame the venue was only about half full but yeh focus live have always been great have a good time next friday mate.

  • Tommy Saxondale lives on

  • Gosta muito

  • Shame on those who only know this as the theme from Saxondale, but at least progs profile was raised by the show and the character..even if he was just a piss take of dinosaurs like me. Especially his views on post Gabriel Genesis....Focus are Gods

  • I like Focus. First heard songs about 1972. Have four of their albums. I like earliest work best. They are my third favorite Prog after the Mighty YES, then Renaissance.

  • Also check out Jethro Tull's 'Living in the Past'.

  • Just been watching the box-set of Saxondale....the theme music is ace as is the programme ! Very seventies music.....hippy ! I want his Mustang *sobs*.

  • its not tulll ............its focus, these guys rule and did a lot of did original stufff ...ask tommy saxondale....he was one of there so called,roadies..........

  • Finally.....the saxondale theme........YEAAAAA kick but

  • Very original despite many of you going on about it being "Jethro Tullish" That mouth flute sound was pioneered by Roland Kirk in 1958, a good 10 years before the "jazz flute endemic." Thijs Van leer, Ian Anderson, Ian Mc Donald, Lyn Dobson, Jimmy hastings, Bands like Free, Soft Machine,Golden Earring, Renaissance, Quintessence they all used the flute in that context and started off around the same time. So learn about the music before you start going on about how Jethro Tullish this sounds.

  • @elviss Not Free

  • @elviss

    Well put.

  • 13 People don't know good YAZZ FLUTE (Anchorman Quote) when they hear it lol. There wasn't much flute rock out there, so soak it in along with Tull of course.

  • School days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • man that drummer just sitst there no motion at all except for his hands :P

  • A beautiful melody, and yes, Tullish indeed !

  • Ongelofelijk

  • This rocks!

  • This guy can try, but Ian Anderson is the only one who can play the flute and still look badass

  • I can't stop listening to Focus they sound sooo good I will have to go & see them Live

  • Que gran grupo...FOCUS!!!, deberian denunciar a los que se hacen pasar por ellos, FRAUDULENTOS!!!, magnifica interpretacion...

  • just saw focus in Cardiff at the globe club, they were sooo very very good..happy days are here again!!

  • I wish Focus were more popular in USA.

  • Yayyyyyyyyyyy a flutist in a rock band xD

  • EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE BUT DID THESE OR JETHRO TULL FIRST USE THE FLUTE

  • @MrPaulwaller70 It's hard to say, both coming to the fore in the '70s. Italian prog rock band PFM and Gentle Giant also used flute. Although GG used EVERYTHING!

  • @Mogggggpiano To make it even more confusing check out the song Dark Rose by Brainbox, Jan Akkerman's (the guitarist of Focus) previous band. This song has a long flute solo as well and is even older.

I am a Jethro Tull fan as well, and all these songs come to show that the flute is a very rock instrument!

  • @dutchellene Flutes are quite quiet and difficult to amplify. A microphone too near the mouthpiece and all you hear is heavy breathing! But it was at this time that mics got a lot better, maybe that helped flautists come to the fore in rock. I'll listen to Brainbox if I can find something, thanks for the tip. It's worth listening to early 70s Irish band "Fruup", their keyboard player, Stephen Houston, featured the OBOE quite heavily!

  • Very Tommy Saxondalish

  • Focus fan also. One of my favorite bands. The most simple music is often the most effective and memorable but the hardest to write. Focus combined a memorable melody with a experimental touch to make timeless music. This melody is great plus that little break/solo at 1.27 is beautful. Focus II is still my favorite piece of them but I have all their albums. Akkerman is one of the only guitarists who's solo's could make me emotional/give me goosebumps.

  • pan pie ... the faggid tree must end!

  • Indeed this should be my favourite instrumental song perchance without consider Jethro tull.

  • de intro van Jan Akkerman is elke keer weer kippevel!!

  • Ancora Focus

  • Ancora Focus

  • And the theme from Saxondale!

  • I've always thought it somewhat bizarre that this (flute solo) was written by guitarist Akkerman, and Sylvia (guitar solo) was written by flute player van Leer - especially as they were also A and B sides of the same single here in the UK!

  • This is one of my faves on Focus 3 - never knew this vid existed!!! you rock. I still have the vinyl!

  • @mixedmeteor Me too, second year uni - Fragile, Lizard, and Focus 3. Focus are much more than just Hocus Pocus, great composers, Thijs & Jan are great musicians. Saw them live in about 73 in Sydney, a great concert.

  • they are better than Tull. musicianship alone. nobody beats Jan Akkerman

  • @Hitman116 I wouldn't say that Focus are better or worse than Tull. The comparison is inevitable because Anderson and Van Leer both play flute but the music that each band has produced differs in so many other ways that it would be unfair to say one is better than the other. Personally, I like both.

Got to admit, though, that this is a good vid. This is the track that got me into Focus so many years ago along with other high profile numbers such as Hocus Pocus and Sylvia.

  • era anche la sigla di non ricordo più che cosa alla radio nazionale negli anni '70...c'è qualcuno che si ricorda?

  • sweet song i got it on a record :D

  • Theme for the BBC's 'Saxondale' too!

  • @stingerdelux I meant to vote you up but slipped. I am so sorry...

  • I'm sure this was also the theme tune for those French language programmes on ITV on Sunday mornings, too.

  • bellissima

  • Thys van Leer can really play the flute

  • @locomotive1804 yeah - I bet Ian Anderson is losing loads of sleep over it

  • @locomotive1804 Jan Akkerman can realy play the guitar ^^ greetz

  • such an epic melody

  • Always loved this one and yea I remember the program "Don't Ask Me" this was indeed the theme to it - it aired in our country too - down under in New Zealand. Wicked Musicians. ;-)

  • drummer is messi!!!

  • @WKaliberr

What an ignorant sucker!, go and listen to your manly music if that is what you are looking for, or needing.

  • "Top Gear - Seriously Cool Driving Music"

  • Me fascina ¡¡¡¡¡

    Focus es genial

    Is a fantastic progrock band

  • dude....

    you serial?

  • Loving it! :-D Something about it

  • brill love them

  • Seen them twice this year and once a year for the last 4 years. This track stands out for the exceptional sound Thijs extracts from his flute. Better in smaller venues. Great all round show but they are quite heavy.

  • simply the best ever band ever ever ever

  • WOOOO ! Are they still goin'? Lucky people to have seen them recently!

  • ja ein wirklich schöner song

    yes, a very nice song

  • Pretty fab!

  • yes!

  • voll gut :D

  • I was fortunate enough to see them play last night. Fantastic gig, one of the best I've seen.

The question that seems to be on many peoples minds is, will we ever see Thijs and Jan do a Focus gig again ?

  • Just got back last night from seeing Focus headlining the LEGENDS OF ROCK Tour. They were amazing. Van Leer kind of looks like Uncle Bulgaria the Womble, he tripped over some equipment and the sound technician gallantly jumped onto the stage to help him replace the stuff. Didn't ruin the song though. Total pros. A really good evening of prog rock!

  • I saw them with Steenhoven two months ago. Great guitarist. And one of the best concert I have ever seen.

  • Pity Jan Ackermaan doesnt play with them(or does he?)

  • If jan ackermaan is the guitar player with the beard then no he dosent play live with them any more.

  • Yea i know he fell out with Thijs van thingie years ago, shame still got that classic 'Slyvia/Hocus Pocus track from OGWT. awesome

  • no, he unfortunately doesn't

  • No. I'm a friend of Jan. He does not play with Thijs van Leer.

  • one of my all time favs

  • Anyone else going to see them on their classic legends of rock tour this year ? i got my ticket seen them live in manchester 2 or 3 years ago they are outstanding live.

  • I'm debating it. I haven't seen them live, but tickets are expensive and I'm not totally bowled over by the other two acts featured in the tour. Are they any good?

  • Full of energy... they never play anything the same way twice! Well worth the trip.

  • Honestly there 1 of the best live acts ive ever seen there amazing live. Like you im not bothered about the other 2 bands on the bill im just there for focus. Trust me though they are more than worth the ticket price i got a front row ticket to see them in preston in october and im well looking forward to it.

  • Thanks for the recommendation. I've now booked tickets for November. Ian Anderson this month, Seth Lakeman in October and Steeleye & Focus in November!

  • Ok, well I saw all three last year. I have t say i'm a massive Groundhogs fan, and they are great, you should check them out before you go.

Wishbne Ash (or rather Martin Turner's...) were amazing, completely blew me away.

Then Focus completed one of the best gigs i have seen to date. It's more than worth the ticket price....

  • nice tune

  • Oh my never seen this video before. But the music is genious like always. Get their greatest hits it's excellent. Or rather get all their albums -_-

  • They love the weed

  • Thijs van leer!! (with this guy i've had a jamsession on school:O )

    Jan akkerman!!

  • @nickofzo wouw, das pas vet

  • @nickofzo Your way too lucky. I'm only 23 and he is my favourite "contemporary rock composer" if you will. Would love to jam with Thijs any day

  • @EirikEmil everyone has luck, but this time it was mine.

  • @nickofzo Your way too lucky. I'm only 23 and he is my favourite "contemporary rock composer" if you will. Would love to jam with Thijs any day

  • es perfecta la cancion

    a tocarla

    ¡IS BEAUTIFULL!!!!!!!

  • I remember this being the 'link' music between the schools progs, with the countdown analogue clock face.

  • Thank you for reminding me.I love this song, but just had trouble remembering where I had heard it.

  • Angelo Branduardi copies this song in his " il giocatore di biliardo" ; listen it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It's the same.

  • no its not, its bet middler "did you now your my hero" slow version (lol) middle section maybe

im off out back to shoot myself for knowing that

  • come back Tommy Saxondale.

  • FOCUS were "the Art of Noise" of the 1970's... The House of the King was also the "sig" for two BBC Schools programmes in the 70's "Rendezvous France" and "Treffpunkt Deutschland".

  • wheres magnus pyke?

  • hes on the flute

  • That's Thijs van Leer, not Magnus Pyke!

  • i realised that as soon as I put the comment but was too lazy 2 change it :P

  • very jethro tullish

  • That's because Jethro Tull recorded it... Focus got there first, though, by writing it!!

  • Jethro Tull never recorded it.. Where the hell did you get that from? LOL.

  • @Busbysbabe Even better than Jethro Tull

  • @Busbysbabe Damned right! But, Focus, better, in my eyes!

  • @Busbysbabe Must be the flute!

  • @Busbysbabe Ian Anderson learned by Thijs van Leer :-)

  • @Busbysbabe ..není to nic ,,je to najhoršia muzika akú kedy som počul.

  • From their first album ( in the netherlands In and Out of Focus) drums, Pierre vd Linden, Bassguitar, Cyril Havermans, Organ and Flute, Thijs van Leer, Leadguitar, Jan Akkerman, In the Netherlands they recieved a Edison for this album

  • saxondale rules

  • even if Tommy Saxondale is just a "bitova dick"

    welcome to dick club

  • beastinnnnnnnnnnng

  • yea i like this beter than jethro this song is amazing

  • dont forget its also used for the theme tune of british comedy saxondale!

  • saxondale rules!! never heard of this tune till i watched saxondale i absolutely adore steve coogan!

  • Hahaha, I also remember they used 'Hocus Pocus' on Saxondale's end credits.

  • awesome, i love the dutch, so "out there"

  • The science program that used this was called 'Dont Ask Me' (ran from '74 to '78)

The comedy show about the ex-roadie was with Steve Coogan (not Frank Skinner) and was called Saxondale

  • thanx.

  • OMG they did this song!!! I forgot this song existed. Love the melody.

  • It did. I remember hearing from a schools programme called encounter France, Spain and Germany. I thought it was Jethro Tull, till I found out it was from Focus and was used on a Frank skinner programme about an ex rodio turn pest controller. Don't know the comedy programme

  • 5***** Thankyou for posting!!!

  • Sounds like medieval, like a juice of Pigeon, or salt. Marching with a Court Jester, going to a road-widening bang festival, is the musical reminiscence here. Also, I think this was the theme tune to a school programme here in England. Makes me feel it.

  • this is great!

  • fucking good ... I saw focus in Brasil..

  • TVL took up flute from age 11 received a degree for its mastery from Geneva Conservatoire and his father was a pro classical flautist before him. Ian Anderson heard Rolank Kirk totally ripped him off for sound and technique. Where is the comparison. Anderson uses incorrect fingering (self admitted)but blows a happy tune. The argument of honor (spelled wrongly) infests youtube. Why cant people accept that good music is a subjective preference. Thicko's look the word up most cant read/write.

  • The Hobbit+flute=rock.

  • damn ! i miss MUSICIANS with capital letters like this guys ! we r live in poor musical days :( no fantasy no passion no vision.

thnks for the video is a legacy.

  • @argusgr hey man if u listen to European folk metal there are really good musicians playing amazing instruments

  • @argusgr I love Focus! But you have to appreciate music as a whole! I love all music, but the 'Poor musical days' are also part of my music tastes aswell! I am not being judgemental, but, you have to move on! Accept all music! I like music from Elgar to Napalm Death! Despite the genre, the MUSICIAN. as you put it, still has a passion for his/her particular genre! Music moves on. & you must move with it! ...........Or be left behind! 44 & still loving the music of Focus! ..& Today!

  • @martynpank lol, i hear ya man... but napalm death? i cant staaaaaaaand the vocalist lol, so its not for me. but i like how you used napalm death in your example:P

  • @Relix Nice answer! & you are quite right, I use it as an example! Ok, my other analogy is 'From Gregorian Chant to Gabba'!!! I dislike Modern Country. I hate Meatloaf! .....Well, more Jim Steinman! & US poodle rock, such as Jon Bovi!!!! I have a HUGE vinyl & CD collection.......& you won't believe some of the 'Crap' I have!! Actually, listening to 'Glory Road' by Gillan, as I type!!!

  • @martynpank

respect for your way of respecting the musicians

  • @MrNikHuis No, No, No!!! I don't want respect! I know a good tune when I hear it!!! As I may have mentioned. I have a very, very wide taste in music. .....& 'House of the King' is included!

  • Saxondale!!!

  • The first few times I heard this I thought it was the Tull as well :o

  • super sound from this Dutch group!

  • outstanding someone even thought it was j Tull ...quite a compliment !

  • Hell yeah, that's a major compliment to Jethro Tull. Quite an honor really.

    :)

  • I guess/I am sure English selfwanker never listened to all Thijs van Leer's records..

  • well...Ian Anderson is fantastic and I love Jethro Tull but I'm not sure that he's better, technically speaking, than Thijs Van Leer, not in the 1970 at least...it's obvious that both the two learnt everything from Rolad Kirk...

  • I have to second you on that. Ian is the king of the flute and rock music in general. Focus is still brilliant though

  • lo mejor de la musica es como estar en una estrella y ver el mundo desde alli, fumando algo suave y tomando un buen vino blanco

  • I saw them on a recent UK gig - they are still great and quiet mad - but you need to be to play such eccentric rock music :)

  • Love Focus, love this song, glad to see it up here, but they look so sedate, did someone slip tranquilizers in their water?

Seriously, it is very nice to see these old favorites, I used to have bout 3 of these guy's albums and the melodies are still there for a long time and just came back, every note! Fantastic!
