Lastly, why would you ever compare a youth league or even a high school player with a major leaguer? Major league baseball players can get away with poor fundamentals because they are so big, strong, and fast. They throw the ball 90+ MPH from the outfield, even without implementing proper footwork or body position. I think comparing youth league players or amatuer players to major league baseball players, or using major leaguers as a model for what to teach, is a dangerous and flawed idea.
Furthermore, when done properly, the bare hand does not get in the way of a catch. Major league infielders use two hands, and nobody is making the argument for infielders that the bare hand gets in the way (unless you are also suggesting that infielders should field the ball with one hand too). For the sake of your players, I sure hope you are not teaching this.
I have never heard any successful coach anywhere, at any level, indicate that catching a ball with one hand is the proper way to catch a ball. Catching with two hands not only secures the ball, but it also enables an outfielder to transfer the ball to his throwing side quicker. This can be the difference between a baserunner being called out our safe.
Catching the ball with two hands is a thing of the past. 1) The bare hand gets in the way of the catch (2) try stretching and reaching for the ball with two hands. You can't get very far....MLB outfielders always have the non glove hand out of the way of the catch. Not because they are pro's but that's the proper way to catch a ball.
