Dear lord, this is beautiful. There are tears in my eyes. I've listened countless times to the Kožená, Fischer-Dieskau, and Norman videos, but this is possibly my favorite. Wow.
having heard every version on Youtube, José Van Dam is my favourite with its flash glimpses of Beyond - to be treasured. I was at first puzzled as to why this ultimate piece was last on the CD. But, of course! you don't have to switch off the next track - instead, you can remain in the state of meditation the song has plunged you into - Sergine
His exceptionally deep, rich voice is so suitable for the melenchoy of Mahler. The finale of the film Le Maitre de Musique is remarkable. My only disappointment (but I understand the limitations of films) was not having the entire song. His stage presence in the film perfect for the role.
I have the film on VHS packed away since I am moving but I think it was simply called Mahler but not sure, it was an English production by Russell, won awards for photography and maybe if you look up Ken Russel you can fine it-- 1971 was the date as I recall and it was filmed in England and Swiss area . Wonderful film full of his music and shows what he went through as a child and how the anti Jewish feelings in Germany and a drunken father effected him he was a lonely boy as shown.
Los Angeles had a wonderful Mahler society years ago when I lived in California, maybe still strong and they even had his daughter at one function, years ago.
Also a nice film by Ken Russell a British film shows the rough life and childhood of Mahler whose father was a heavy drinker and how he converted from Being Jewish to Catholic so he conduct for Cosima who was anti semetic.
That (of the film) performance had impressed me so much I can not explain. I had a Janet Baker CD with this song and feel this maybe is a best performance, but it can not replace that impression the Dallayracsperformance caused on me. I love this song and it express my deepest feeling about my deepest love: the truth of life and love (not about the object of it).
I have my first and most impressive contact with this song (ok Lied) in this film: the music teacher, whit the Joachim Dallayrac (role of van Damme) interpretation. Im not sure if this is that performance.
This is the finest rendition of this song I have heard by a man, but the finest for me was by Frances Yeend. She transported me in this song like none other.

Je trouve que José Van Dam a une voix réellement magnifique , chaude , capable de toutes les nuances ,une technique très travaillée ;
