I used to take piano lessons. REALLY expensive. I had to quit after a few lessons cause I couldn't afford it. But while I was taking them my teachers made no note in the proper fingering. They let me do whatever the h*ll I wanted and I got some really bad habits....
It's been years since I took lessons, but I play my piano every day. I know nothing but what my teachers told me for 5 lessons. But music is my life and I couldn't take it anymore... So thank u for posting... Maybe now I can follow
@404jipjip - well in this video your fingers are locked on an individual key (no jumping around) and you just have to match the right number to the correct numbered finger.
I watched almost all of your videos and I love them!!!! I am a beginner and did MOST of the excersizes and songs correctly! :D these videos were so helpful! thanks
0_0 i learned wrong! I always reach over with my pinky when going down the keys and reach over with my thumb after my pinky goes down when going up the keys.
Your lessons are awesome! I'm 17 and I just got my first keyboard. Before this, I can only play 2 songs by ear but I don't know anything about piano. Thanks for the lessons!
excellent, reminds me of Arpeggio (i believe it's called) on the guitar. As you mention it's good to pick up these good habits before you set in bad ones.

@wjiun55 - thanks I try to stay clear of recommending specific brands.... but just be sure you get an 88 note (weighted keys) digital piano.... and actually visit your music store to TRY OUT the keyboard before you buy.... they tend to have different "feels"

@BakaMayu105 - Well mine also goes up too (old football injury). I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long a you can get it down on the key you need to play in time, no one will know your pinky is way high in the sky as long as the music sounds good.
@SoulAmvRE ever see that old Rocky movie? There's a scene where Sly tells his trainer that he "can't learn to fight left-handed".... and what did his trainer do? He tied Sly's right hand behind his back and forced him to focus solely on his left hand.... (not that I'm suggesting you do that)... but you'll need to focus alot of time on developing your coordination with your left hand as the dominate of both hands for awhile.
I feel awkward teaching my lesbian student fingering. I may ask her to find another teacher. Every time I say the word, she either laughs or tells me she already knows all about it.

Actually I have been playing on the piano for 2 months,My problem is playing with two hands,it's like I got to have 2 minds, too confusing, is there any recommendation improves that?
I just bought the Yamaha DGX-230/YPG-235, i don't know how good it is, i spend #360 on the piano. I always wanted to play piano, when i was back home in africa, but i never had the money to own or learn piano. This is a dream coming true, your are a great teacher. I just wanted to know if it worth the Yamaha piano #360 and i always wanted to learn how long it takes to master the paino. I always would like to know if i would able to apply what i learn her to play my cultures music.
this is great. I always have this great passion for music special piano. It was a dream to learn to play piano for me when i was back home in africa. Now i was able to own a piano and i bought Yamaha DGX-230/YPG-235 and it coasted me 360. I am a start i have no clue about piano. What do u think of the Yamaha piano, have i bought the right piano, and i am truly loving ur lessons. How long it take to master the piano? i am just wondering i spend my money wisely .
U see... this is exactly why I don't start my lessons off with complicated musical terminology. You're getting caught up with something totally unnecessary (in my view). A "slur" is a phrase marking found in sheet music notation (something I am *not* teaching in this video). A slur essentially means to play a group of notes smoothly or "legato" (the same exact thing).
But do we really need *phrase markings* on staff paper to tell us how to express our playing on the piano? I think not!
Legato just simply means that you're playing your notes with a smooth and steady consistency (not choppy or detached). It really is the simplest way to play a group of notes one after the other.
i had one slight question however... i saw a video in which when the player was going from C to high C, he used his thumb, pointer, middle, tucked his thumb, then used his last 4 fingers to finish... im not sure im making sense. i guess my main question is, does it matter when you decide to tuck the thumb under your fingers? so, could i tuck after my middle finger instead of my ring finger?
Good question: That is the basic way of playing the C major scale (for one octave). If you need to play it for two consecutive octaves you need to tuck the thumb after (1-2-3) then play (1-2-3-4) tuck under again, and then continue playing the second octave (1-2-3- tuck --1-2-3-4-5). So you tuck the thumb after 3 or 4 depending on how far you need to continue climbing up the keyboard after you tuck (*Note - when playing in reverse, you reach OVER the thumb but the fingering is the same). Thanks!
Well, if you're trying to play along with me in the "piano fingering demo", then *don't*. Just watch me as I play the demonstration. Then when I introduce the 1ST FIVE NOTES, follow my instructions carefully and you shouldn't have any problems. This is the most basic piano exercise you will ever play. So take your time and have patience.
yeah im doing better now that i slept a few hours on it after practicing. this is the first time i used all my fingers. i dont use the home row on the computer keyboard. I should probably learn to do that too to get used to using all my fingers all the time.
first off, I'd like to thank you for the videos there really inciteful.
I was also wondering two things, first; does proper sitting posture contribute to playing, if so, what would be the correct posture to play?
Second, i was wondering if you could tell me what the middle and left petal on a piano do. I know the right one is for carrying on the sound of the played note/s.
If you're sitting, sit tall. Lean forward just a little bit, but don't slouch forward. Your forearms should be in a horizontal position. On a real piano, your knees should line up slightly underneath the piano keyboard. One foot can be placed slightly forward to reach the pedals.
The middle pedal sustains notes on the lower end of the keyboard but not the higher range of the keyboard. And the left pedal will lower the volume of the notes as you play.
Oops, think i replied to the wrong link. When you raced up and down the keyboard, did you duck under after your 3rd or 4th finger? I've been practicing and i think 4th finger is the best because obviously it gives you an extra finger to work with, which is going to allow you to go faster. Just thought i noticed you ducking and diving after the 3rd that's all.
this is awesome thank you so much for putting this on here. i got lessons when i was younger and now about 6 years later i want to pick it back up. unfortunately i forgot alot of what i learned. thank you again for helping me.
As a newly retird person, I wanted to get into something that I've always wanted to learn. I picked up a used keyboard on Craigslist and serched the web for information. A few knowledgable guys sell their courses(too many it seems) but yours gives me exactly what I need at this point. THANK YOU so much. May the universe bless you for your generous giving of these videos.
I play guitar - I've playd for a few years, but always wanted to play the piano.. buying a keyboard tomorrow, can't wait. You seem like a raelly nice dude and the lessons are GREAT.. thank you!
the theme song is really nice....can you give its title, please?
thanks again for these piano vids. learning to play even semi-halfway adequately is going to be a lot more of a challenge than I even imagined it was going to be....i admire your skill , congratulations on making something difficult appear almost effortless
Thanks, so far I haven't come up with a special title for the music, so I'll just call it "Get Piano Lesson 1" for now (it's original). The skill will come to you in time. Just keep practicing 20 minutes a day and you'll see yourself improving. And stay tuned for my new vids coming soon.
thanks man...i just got my first keyboard today and I did not realize how difficult playing the basic c-e-g chord is --- i can't get my 2&4 fingers to NOT press down yet! this vid is really good and helpful -- thanks for taking the time to upload it
Well thank you for watching... and actually, you've just given me an idea for a special lesson on how to separate the 1/3, 2/4 and 3/5 fingers. So thanks 4 your feedback!
what about your left hand ;-D

Actually I have been playing on the piano for 2 months,My problem is playing with two hands,it's like I got to have 2 minds, too confusing, is there any recommendation improves that?
Thank u I am so grateful
faisal696 3 years ago
Just follow each lesson one after the other and you'll soon see how to gain independence with the two hands separately.

2 learn the piano it takes weeks or months... 2 master the piano takes years... and 4 some... decades. No ones learning curve is the same.
As long as your keyboard has life-size keys (preferably weighted keys) and at least 49-61 total keys your choice of keyboard should be fine.

this is great. How long it take to master the piano? i am just wondering i spend my money wisely .

then whtz the difference between lagato nd slured?? im now stuck on slured.........
XiuzhuW 3 years ago
U see... this is exactly why I don't start my lessons off with complicated musical terminology.
I think not!
getpianolessons 3 years ago
ok, i sill dont understand how do u play the lagato/slur thingy....
XiuzhuW 3 years ago
Legato just simply means that you're playing your notes with a smooth and steady consistency (not choppy or detached). It really is the simplest way to play a group of notes one after the other.

hey thanks for the vid.
i had one slight question however... i saw a video in which when the player was going from C to high C, he used his thumb, pointer, middle, tucked his thumb, then used his last 4 fingers to finish... im not sure im making sense. i guess my main question is, does it matter when you decide to tuck the thumb under your fingers? so, could i tuck after my middle finger instead of my ring finger?
RANExRANE 3 years ago
Good question: That is the basic way of playing the C major scale (for one octave). If you need to play it for two consecutive octaves you need to tuck the thumb after (1-2-3) then play (1-2-3-4) tuck under again, and then continue playing the second octave (1-2-3- tuck --1-2-3-4-5). So you tuck the thumb after 3 or 4 depending on how far you need to continue climbing up the keyboard after you tuck (*Note - when playing in reverse, you reach OVER the thumb but the fingering is the same). Thanks!
getpianolessons 3 years ago
for some reason this is really hard for me to do. :/
Recruitlulz 3 years ago
Well, if you're trying to play along with me in the "piano fingering demo", then *don't*. Just watch me as I play the demonstration. Then when I introduce the 1ST FIVE NOTES, follow my instructions carefully and you shouldn't have any problems. This is the most basic piano exercise you will ever play. So take your time and have patience.
getpianolessons 3 years ago
yeah im doing better now that i slept a few hours on it after practicing. this is the first time i used all my fingers. i dont use the home row on the computer keyboard.

I know the right one is for carrying on the sound of the played note/s.
hodir 3 years ago
If you're sitting, sit tall. Lean forward just a little bit, but don't slouch forward. Your forearms should be in a horizontal position. On a real piano, your knees should line up slightly underneath the piano keyboard. One foot can be placed slightly forward to reach the pedals.
The middle pedal sustains notes on the lower end of the keyboard but not the higher range of the keyboard. And the left pedal will lower the volume of the notes as you play.

Is it normal for the sides of my thumbs to get sore? I would imagine it's the same as learning to play guitar, it hurts till you build up calluses.
wtbskill 3 years ago
Sounds like a good indication that you're praticing with proper form (it's usually the sides of our thumbs that touch the piano keys). So keep it up!
getpianolessons 3 years ago
Great, thanks for the reply.
wtbskill 3 years ago
Oops, think i replied to the wrong link. When you raced up and down the keyboard, did you duck under after your 3rd or 4th finger? I've been practicing and i think 4th finger is the best because obviously it gives you an extra finger to work with, which is going to allow you to go faster. Just thought i noticed you ducking and diving after the 3rd that's all.
Cheers, your lessons have helped a lot.
wtbskill 3 years ago
You've got a fast eye. Actually I used both the 3rd and the 4th fingers. I'll teach more on that later when I finally get into scales.

As a newly retird person, I wanted to get into something that I've always wanted to learn. I picked up a used keyboard on Craigslist and serched the web for information. A few knowledgable guys sell their courses(too many it seems) but yours gives me exactly what I need at this point. THANK YOU so much. May the universe bless you for your generous giving of these videos.

the theme song is really nice....can you give its title, please?
thanks again for these piano vids. learning to play even semi-halfway adequately is going to be a lot more of a challenge than I even imagined it was going to be....i admire your skill , congratulations on making something difficult appear almost effortless
swennsyever9 4 years ago
Thanks, so far I haven't come up with a special title for the music, so I'll just call it "Get Piano Lesson 1" for now (it's original). The skill will come to you in time. Just keep practicing 20 minutes a day and you'll see yourself improving. And stay tuned for my new vids coming soon.

thanks man...i just got my first keyboard today and I did not realize how difficult playing the basic c-e-g chord is --- i can't get my 2&4 fingers to NOT press down yet! this vid is really good and helpful -- thanks for taking the time to upload it
swennsyever9 4 years ago
Well thank you for watching... and actually, you've just given me an idea for a special lesson on how to separate the 1/3, 2/4 and 3/5 fingers. So thanks 4 your feedback!
