  • Thanks for making this video. I was having trouble setting up gmail in thunderbird but your tutorial solved all my problems.

  • Why did you change the imap and smtp ports from 143 to 993 and 25 to 587? Arent imap servers typically on port 143 and smtp servers on port 25?

  • THANK YOU DUNCAN!!!!!!!!!!! I flippin hate using live mail, flippin annoying. Missing files etc. Thanks for showing us how to set up gmail. Showed perfectly 5/5!

  • hi man just wondering where did you get that wallpaper sorry if im annoying you a bit with all these questions

  • your the best man keep it come in!

  • Thank you! This really helps! Instead of going to all the websites I could just get all my mail in one place! I allready had thunderbird, but I did not know how to a my gmail account? thanks again.

  • I like to have a beer with .. Duncan's videos. **But with regard to Duncan's enthusiastic recommendation for GMail, my computer geek friend said he doesn't trust GMail, and all things tied to Google. But he uses them both--in moderation--because he's careful what he types into his gmail emails. A fear is that ONE single organization would have ALL of a person's life on computer file. So, Duncan, what do you think? What does everyone think?

  • It's true that there's a risk but I believe it's a risk we all take for granted - how many of us use Google as our (only) search engine?

The argument about web-based email is that there's a filthy-rich company out there willing to provide you with free email. Otherwise we would be stuck with snail mail and Telnet, and even those have third parties. I believe that Gmail is a Good Thing as it is a very nice application which does its job very well, but I have securer alternatives (University).

  • will this work with hotmail too

  • Maybe its just because you redid you account on thunderbird, but when i set up my gmail the folders downloaded already.

But thanks for the info! I guess i can actually use thunderbird now instead of the web.

  • really informative - thanks for the helpfulness

  • Thanks for the heads up. :D

  • thanks for the info mobile

  • There is one major warning by doing such a thing: If you save your password (to log in automatically), be very careful, as the security of passwords on Thunderbird (and Firefox) is very poor. It's very easy to grab passwords on these programs.

  • YES, I found some very flimsy protection, so flimsy that I couldn't believe such well regarded programs could be so slip-shod. And I'm not a geek, which should be more of a surprise that I noticed this. Duncan's trying very hard here, so thanks to Duncan, but I'm just too cautious to start mucking about. Am I being unreasonable?

  • Certainly not, although it's the usual security-easiness debate, and there's no simple answer. My answer to this is: If you do online transactions or have confidential information on emails, then having the information in two places makes it less secure and so one should not do this. If you use your Gmail to send out funny pictures or chat with random people, then perhaps it's more acceptable. If the computer is public, then certainly not. In other words, you have to decide yourself.

  • instead of gmail can we use them in yahoo n msn?

  • You can use yahoo and gmail at the same time. In order to get yahoo you have to download a program called "Ypops". Just google that and download it. Then search on google ypops tutorial then you find how to set ypops up.

  • thnks.

  • yessssss he is back

  • i use a combination of windows live mail (hotmail), windows live messenger and windows ;ive mail (software similar to thunderbird)

  • the reason why it only d/ls half your messages is because i bet where i cut off the next message was like over 3mb big. tht's what happened to me it kept timing out.

  • cool video i use incredimail what i think is realy good what do u think of incredimail?

  • yeah its good but a bit to fancy for me, and it downloaded the same messages twice at one point.

  • Nice !

  • Where did you get that wallpaper look nice!! =)
