Humans at the time of the Forerunners were near equals to them until they were defeated in the war with the Forerunners who devolved the humans and dismantled their civilization back to the stone age as punishment for aggression. The humans were the first to encounter the flood and temporarily defeated them before losing to the Forerunners.

(further continuing) ... These attacks made most of the Halo's start to retreat through a portal to the Ark. Mendicant still controlled one halo and i presume wiped out the forerunner capital. Only 7 halo's made it through the portal to the Ark. Lifeworkers are the only remaing forerunners because most of them were on the Ark (which is positioned outside the galaxy) because they had been tending to the collection of species, most recently with human and San Shayum (prophet) specimens.

@wr4th1800 This is 102,553 years before the events of Halo 1. So 100,000 BC. My information is from the new Halo book 'Crytum'. It details Forerunner story. And is the first of a trilogy. It says in the book that there is one remaining Precursor. The book ended with the Main character, Bornstellar (a young Builder) arriving at the Ark after escaping through the portal. He meets with the life workers and then the book ends. So i don't yet know what happened to those on the Ark. : )

There was origanally 12 Halo's. When he tried to fire the halo's the forerunners tried to stop him by attacking with space ships...

Those characters at the end are called lifeworkers. They are forerunners. There are different rates of forerunners. From highest to lowest: Builders, Life-workers, Miners and then Warriors. Life workers are concerned with everthing biological. You can guess what the other rates are for. The builders made the Ark to produce Halo's. They made the Halo's to try and destroy the flood.

The domain is like the internet, but can be accessed through the forerunner mind. It basically says that all of their history archives have been lost. If they do not survive the flood then no one in the galaxy will know of the past, will know who or what the forerunners where.
