  • c'mon who cares about 1st place. too many shitty songs were top. THIS song don't need it. It's fantastic without beiing first on any chart.

  • It should have been Number one song on the lists. We still play them at home 30 years later. They are like a good red wine, get's better as years pass!!

  • Shold have..

  • Great song.

  • love it;)

  • is it just me or does warren's drumming go right through you? i heard they did most of the video in a carpark either in or near covent garden. always loved the little mustache on midge. it was very much part of the 80's.

    Love 80´s...

  • @efkagore They are some awesome sounds. The piano finally makes me lose a load.

  • 1:40 - Beast!

  • wieso ist bei so einem alten lied immer noch ein kommentar "nur" ein paar stunden alt?

  • general consensus is that midge ure should have been a roadie for japan...japan should have been massive, along with the chameleons...the lost bands of the 80s..the major band of the 80s that was overlooked is an australian band called THE CHURCH a very influential band to this day

  • adam and the ants where makin noises too, and the jam, squeeze, haircut 100.....the stranglers were just about to release golden brown....

  • The best musical performance of all time......Timeless

  • This means nothing to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.......ooooooooooooooooooooooooh Viennaaaaaaaa!!!

  • Memories! If I had a wish, it would be to go back and start again from 1980 onward.

  • one of the classics from the early 80's

  • Ultravox Rules!

  • from personal experience I would say "Do not try this song at karoke"

  • @persilbran

lol brave man. You'd think this would be one of those songs that a bunch of other bands would cover... I'd like to hear The Sisters Of Mercy or Concrete Blonde do this. Definitely need a great voice to attempt this.

  • He used to be a priest or a vicar or something.Funky monk.

  • Aaaaaaaaaaah Viennaaaaa!

  • Justin Bieber created 55 accounts to press the DISLIKE button

  • Is this song about Ice-cream????

  • How can 55 people not like this? It's genius; it's up there with Bohemian Rhapsody.

  • Ahh Vienna...

  • Covent Garden, actualy. Still, nice work.

  • @Jlipnicki No,it's Vienna!! I know very well those places..

  • Covent Garden, actualy.

  • The director of this video was clearly influenced by the films of Mario Bava.

  • An amazing 'Master piece!'..............

  • Das waren mal Zeiten!!!!! Einfach herrlich

  • When songs lyrics actually meant something and the video did to. Only if that happened today :(

  • Cant believe this song was kept off the number 1 spot by (8) shut up in ya face

  • OH MY GOD IT'S GUIDING LIGHT.

    Except.... not.

  • old, but awesome!

  • @sithyness AMEN !!!!

  • @sithyness you are absolutely right my friend

  • @sithyness; this song has never been forgotten

  • your right i will never forget this

  • What an outstanding song

  • Just a note, this was partly filmed in Covent Garden market, when it was still semi-derelict and it was actualy quite deserted at night.

  • @Jlipnicki Ah,OK, you mean only the very first minutes..From minute 2.40 it is actually Vienna: the Stephansdom, the Hofburg, the Zentral Friedhof..

  • this singer has got such a wonderful voice !!

  • just great, sublime and surreal ...best 80s song ever!

  • best video ever

  • Shit on the villa tonight! Rapid Vienna!

  • Your nightmare has GONE Veela because you won't be meeting Rapid again in european competition. It meant nothing to them.

This season we all pray that 2 of the so-called 'mighty fall' and 'do a leeds' both teams play in claret and blue and think they are so much bigger than they are or ever have been....

  • Oh Villa!

  • Comment removed

  • KEEP RIGHT ON !!!!.

    SOTV !!!!

  • @lurkio321 RAPID VIENNA! COME ON BLUES!

  • haha heres to you villa! SOTV ahh vienna!

  • TIMELESS.Brings back memories of the 80s,lets me see im getting older.

  • I wonder if that caterpillar on Midge Ure's top lip ever grew up to be a butterfly?

  • Midge Ure is simply...genius among us.

  • is Vienna a satanic video and music??

    ...or only impression??!!

...more in the video EXCLUIDODIGITAL !

  • I loved this song so much when it first came out, I used to pretend to be in the video whenever it got dark - although far from being in a pop group in Vienna, I was a 9 year old in Norwich and more often than not in my grandparents' back garden.

  • @NorwichTeenwolf Took some guts to admit that my friend, but know what you mean,it means nothing to me

  • Me and my friends have written a parody to this called ''Rebbeca'' to be right fair though its a facking great song!!!

  • Midge, your concert was fabulous yesterday in Finland. Love your voice and bald head!! ;-) a BIG fan since -81.

  • see?. scottish people can sing great songs....lol

  • @samtaurus007 Bay City Rollers and Nazareth! Scots can't speak English worth a shit though! Had to read subs on Trainspotting.

  • The 80's ruled the world with the music. Great groups and singers from so many countries. That decade can never be recreated. A whole era unto itself. The hair, clothes, different styles that came out. Glad I was around to enjoy the whole decade.

  • How Joe Dolce managed to steal the number 1 slot from this awesomness is beyond me!

  • Such a Poetic Expression of what Vienna means!!...............

  • I enjoy these surreal music videos very much! Also the fact these aren't anywhere near the deficient class of modern music such as the JB shit or Lady Gaga whore. They are gut-wrenching and despicable. Makes my ears bleed, God!

  • fine tune !

  • Saw them last weekend in sweden, omg they were awesome! :-)

  • Brilliant epic!

  • I think is one of the songs that really sums up the 80's for those of us who enjoyed them ,........ and can remember :-)

  • One of the best songs never to reach number one!!,what a travesty...

  • @raykings1886

well, maybe if they used am easy pop drum beat with lyrics about nightclubs, drinks, fashion, boy meets girl blahblah........... and had some naked women on the video.......... maybe then they would've reached number 1

  • @raykings1886

It was re-released and reached number one.

  • @raykings1886 ah shadupayaface

sorry, being ironic. But yes...a travesty :-(

  • @raykings1886 That is so trure my friend, the artist how made number 1 and kept it off the top of the charts is long forgotten just like the single shuut up your face ? by some sad git

funny how that happened, nothing surprises me with the english public

    still top song

  • @raykings1886 whats the matter you? lol

  • @raykings1886 ..reni and renarto, those cold dark days of 80-81.....terrible..bad winter that

  • @EVERTONIC ..maybe 81-82....omd where big in my life then..and october by u2

  • neilam6, LOL... Yeah, it's a good choice. It just got me thinking about my "breakup song" when I was younger: "Sorrow" by Pink Floyd.

  • i wish i grew up with this im only 14 i just love it!!!

  • @matthew9120 thanx sweetie...it's young hearts like you that help the world shine...I'm a YOUNG 50.......

  • @julierice100 thank you my dad showed me this bbc3 show about british synthesizer and bi enjoyed vienna the most

  • tune and lyrics so glad i grew up with this . sod rap

  • So good!!

  • joe's shut uppa ya face was a totaly stupid song , welldone supersonicanime19 i compleatly agree!!!!!!!!

  • how could this not get to number 1 but second that is cruelty to ultravox and synth

  • Thanks for the post... this was the first music video I remember seeing.

It was on HBO< my uncle was one of the first to sign up for it in New York.

    Man, I am getting old..

  • You have to wonder who bought Joe Dolce's "Shaddap You Face" and kept this out of No.1 for THREE weeks. I can understand John Lennon doing it (killed in New York just over a month before) but Joe Dolce!

  • If there is any modern song that would have made Beethoven smile.....

  • THhs has to be one of the finest pop songs ever made. Timeless and haunting. I remember when this was first in the charts - I was 6 years of age. :)

  • this song , it's so beautifull ,

  • Saw them Live yesterday at Foreveryoung 2010. They were awesome!

  • Now, if Lady Gaga made music like this, I might, just might buy her music...

  • midge ure... magic wee man

  • Class .... Thanks.....

  • tru;y amazing, this is one to be redone,

  • @pedastal777 why redo a classic tune? it just ruins what it was.

  • This video was shot in a carpark in Rickmansworth, Midge had never been to Vienna.................HA HA HA..........had me fooled!!!

Saw it all on BBC4 last night!

  • one of the greatest songs in this dekade, i wish freddy mercury sing this song-he has a greatful organ!

  • Mystical song!!

  • I love this song, but never have figured out what the video is all about. Who cares it's a great song with a great video.

  • @090909oo09 I don't think so lol! it was written by midge ure and other members of ultravox! knob geldof had nothing to do with it!

  • @krissyboom Why did ye call Bob Geldof a knob? This man did more for this messed up world than any person still walkin. Strange comment...

  • awesome song

  • Have a look at some new and rare stuff under h ttp://ultravox.npage.de

  • Yeah i get goose bumps too and my nipples stand out its so embracing love this song

  • I just like this song!

  • Such a perfect song.

  • I remember ending a bad relationship and having this song on repeat for hours

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • What is this achually about???? I spent the entire 5 minutes waiting for the "Viennaaaaaaa" bits i forgot to listen to the words

  • First time I've seen that music vid.

It blows away Joe Dolce's shaddup ya face that's for sure.

  • Both my Great grandfathers are from Vienna !!!!!!

  • It's hard to believe that this was one of the early MTV videos! Nothing cheesy looking about this. Way ahead of it's time, and has always been one of my favorite videos. Ok, Midge Ure isn't the best lip syncher, and kind of looks like she should be a member of the "Python" gang, but I still love it, and the song too!

  • A classic masterpiece from 1981.....it was and is a great song.

  • Back then this album (yes kids, album) shared space in my record collection with disparate groups such as; Misfits, Chet Baker, JoyDivision, Bowie, Handel, Clash, Miles Davis, Stranglers, King Tubby, Black Flag, Frank Zappa, Roxy Music, Wagner, The Damned..etc. All quality. Seemed as though being open to all these different types of music was natural to those I knew.

  • Kept off no.1 by "Woman" fair enough but "shaddupya face"?? though put vienna on then shuddupya face at a wedding and see which gets most people on the dance floor after 17 pints???Classic song of classic era, still remember shades at Live Aid

  • This is almost a semi-eerie composition, almost suitable for a rock musical of sorts. Very interesting song, and accompanying video. I liked it. Thumbs up.

  • can't believe a brilliant song liek this was kept out of the number 1 spot by of all things a novelty song. tragic.

  • i want a time machine to take me back to my time 80's

  • Massive song in our time!

  • I don´t believe 50 people dislike this video... They have no idea what they lost in the 80s.. Fortunately, many bands are stil "alive and kicking" as well! :) Cheers

  • this is such a atmospheric video. i love it. love ultravox and midge too. and his sexy voice, and mustache. brings me rightback to when i was a teenager again.

  • No one was like Midge Ure...voice & self...

  • This is a lonely song.

  • estu...pida cancion me aburrio a mas no poder

  • @nidiyare esta bueno el tema.....

  • golden oldie! so great...

  • Hi Zhere. Vhelkum to Vienn*flem*.

  • I could listen to this song times and times again .... looking back to the (early) 80ies, we've had a wunderfull time and such great songs!!! I won't miss this time. Guess how happy I'am that I had this experience!!!! :D

  • What do you think of Joe Dolce's shaddupa your face? that was even better than this wasn't it?

Well it must have been, it was number 1 whilst this could only manage number 2

  • haunting

  • remember when I was 17 days old when this came out, but I remember it just the same!!!

  • I dont know why, but this reminds me of my days in germany.

80's music and these types of moods give me the feeling of europe and germany in particular. :)

  • I love you Midge Ure! I still have my album....

  • Eines der besten Stücke überhaupt! Ich liebe es. Es steigert sich so langsam und der Inhalt des Liedes ist sehr bewegend. :o)

  • I love 80's music and videos. The artists really reached in trying to be creative and to have meaning in their music, sometimes they reached so far that nobody could get what the hell they were talking about and this is a good example, and really that's what are is, isn't it? open to interpretation. Today's music is not artistic in this sense at all. Hip-hop for instance, which has become the most popular genre is completely unambiguos. Great for a good time and dancing, but is it art?

  • @underthefornix I absolutely love the main line in this song......"This means nothing to me...This means nothing to me!" You see? the singer doesn't even know what it's about. Spider crawling on some guys face, guy with a hook hand drinking a martini, a bunch of European aristocrats from a bygone era hanging around in an opera house, chick with bleeding nail wounds in her face, guy with a white furry thing on his face, another guy getting shot and flopping on the staircase. Awesome!

  • Midge Uhre IS fashion.
