  • A mora is not a syllable....

  • @mandolaman12 Finally somebody who has something intelligent to say. The occidental adaptation of Haiku as a poetry form doesn't makes really sense. Octavio Paz committed a lot of mistakes when he tried to adapt the form. At first: a mora, or a character is not a syllable, so is very stupid pretend to write a Haiku with a 5-7-5 form. Besides, Haiku is not just pure metric, has a cultural and historical ground back that justified it.

  • The nineteen-fifties:

    Jack Kerouac set the scene,

  • If you love Kerouac like I do, check out my new book Road Trippn' (by Sean McLaughlin), a tribute to Jack; youth; Freedom; Love; God; sex, drugs, rock'n'roll and America set across the country and culminating in the streets of NYC, a month prior to the attacks of 9/11. Check it out at Amazon.com and support another working class artist from one of America's other former industrial glory towns - Cleveland this carnation around instead of Lowell.

  • the main thing in poetry is communication, stop talking about 7 beats here five beats there, thats wat turns people off poetry, reminds them of exams.

the beats freed up poetry to communicate, just enjoy it for wat it is.

  • @anthraxman whiskers cannot whisk, they judge the distance on sides, framing the face so.

  • @anthraxman that made me laugh, man. excellent! Xx

  • @anthraxman Kerouac's idea of an American Haiku wasn't what you exemplified though. His was simply two sentences.

  • @anthraxman

    Hey there, anthraxman,

    Refrigerator, my ass.

    Funny haiku, though.

  • I love haiku

  • @JoelMonroe ha, awesome

  • I can't really be bothered to look up western haiku but surely if an asian country started using iambic pentameter, called it eastern iambic pentameter but didn't use iambic pentameter we would accuse them of intellectual arrogance? Also the talent that I'm so proud of I reserve for your Dad and step-brother. I'm not bigoted, I just think your opinion is invalid

  • @IHateBarnett WTF SON IT"S A HAIKU ACCEPT THAT!

  • 'Son'? You've been listening to too much of that rap music matey. Get thee back to the suburbs and your IT job.

  • @IHateBarnett I just don't understand why "some" people try to complicate simple things (i.e. Haikus)

  • these arent Haikus though, isnt it supppose to go 5 syllables, 7, 5? There are all 10.

  • that's not really a response as you haven't said anything new....in fact, you basically capitulated for being a numb-nuts haven't you? Surely you must have liked how I worked 'Belshazar' into an insult though? A 'haiku' insult at that, that's talent mate xx

  • I don't think it matters anymore, he's dead in'e?

  • this is the chillest thing ive heard

  • Probably the most soothing video ever made.

  • a haiku is 5-7-5 syllables. If you count the beats my friend...Incidentally, 'gay' is a general insult in England, a bit like spazz or twat, it doesn't literally mean what the original connotation of the word suggests. Rather like 'fuckface' is a meaningless insult, it's just two words combined. Unless it's a verb rather than an adjective in which case it sounds like an agressive sexual activity which your mother probably resents you doing to her

  • @IHateBarnett hahahaha

  • Al Cohn on tenor!

  • I love the sax work. Jack was awesome!

  • this is american or western haiku, which is not limited to the five seven five pattern. you might as well be saying blank verse isn't iambic pantameter. by definition any three line poem is a haiku, though they normally fit either the unrestricted western format, the original japanese five-seven-five, which works best in the language it was invented for or the inverse seven five seven. learn your shit before you spew it

  • I'm sorry if I upset anyone. Wasn't in the best of places when I wrote that, and I intend to remove it now. I duly note my own ignorance, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    Hope this finds you well,

    Humphrey

  • THX -- love Jacks haiku

  • it seems pure devil condemned himself

  • not a haiku cock

try harder next time you gay

and fuck off unless you know what the fuck you are talking about belshazar

  • @IHateBarnett Put a bullet in your head for all of us. Please. You're less than a Mcdonalds.

  • beatnik talking shit

still has more to say than most

    why do we bother?

  • what the hell does all this dumb little shit mean

  • god made a big bang

what a big mess we made

do you think god will clean it all up

  • listen instead of

    putting your lazy letters

    together toa meaningless mess

  • this guy is so cool, he has one the best voice I've ever heard.

  • boring....why dont they interact more free. This just aint hip man.

  • holymen look mad

    some hollow guardians

  • It helped that he looked like a Hollywood actor. If he'd have looked like Charles Laughton would anybody have listened to him? Actually Charles Laughton does a great reading of Kerouac, Google: 'Dharma beat Charles Laughton' and you'll hear it. All best - Al of Yahoo! Group: Beat_Happening.

  • @Kerouac4fan

Well, I didn't really know what Kerouac looked like when I first read On the Road. Furthermore, I'm heterosexual! His looks didn't and couldn't help him at all with me. Yet, he's my favorite writer. The Duluoz Legend is better than Harry Potter or DaVinci Code because it's better than Harry Potter and DaVinci Code, not because Jack Kerouac has movie star looks while Rowling looks like a beaten boxer and Dan Brown looks like an even gayer Bret Easton Ellis.

  • You're a towel

  • You're a towel

  • oh, interesting opinion!

Why do you think he is overrated, actually?

No offense, just a simple question.

  • Well, thats just like your opinion.... maaaan. If you dont like him, dont read or pay attention to his material. Why dont you pick up a nice Twilight book instead or perhaps Harry Potter because gee... theyre so original and thought provoking!

    Just messin with you buddy,

anyways what book of his have you read? Personally I thought On The Road was overrated but I LOVED The Dharma Bums, that was a very enjoyable read.

Personally I think Burroughs is overrated.

  • I felt the exact same way about On The Road and Dharma Bums, many don't

  • i felt the same as well

  • Mad Jack Kerouac

    Poet-saint of the U.S. -

    Gold dust on the road.

  • I've got piles and

    piles and piles of forks

but not an ounce of happiness

  • Jack Kerouac is a little too into himself, but his writing still makes me feel happy when I hear it,

  • how is he into himself?

  • That's what some obscure zen fellow said about Kerouac's Buddhism. He is in touch with himself. Besides writers have to be egotistic to some extent.

  • i would have to completely disagree. I did not know the man but I would say there is a lot of self loathing in his works that I have come across

  • Out my window, life progresses but I don't feel it inside.

  • the sink above me frightens me............it really dose

  • You! Violentsilence,

    have killed Jack Kerouac!

    He was about happiness

  • I don't get any of it really. It provokes thought; maybe that is all what it is meant to do. It's great in its own way. I suppose . . .

  • I am leaving..

    the video is streaming..

  • In the tradition of Haiku, these are really poor ones. Check out Issa and Basho of you're interested in reading a master.

  • take it easy buddah, your day will come...

  • well yeah you can say that, but this isn't traditional haiku. its american haiku. it doesn't follow the basho because its not supposed to, part of the idea of the beats was having a strong understanding of the rules, then making their own.

  • I go to the park. It is shining rain. Coke and platinum.
