China only had two commisioners posted in Tibet, and Tibet enjoyed de-facto independence. it wasn't until 1792 that China begin to assert more influence in Tibet. by the mid 1800's, China had all but abandoned Tibet. wars were fought with Nepal and Jammu, without the Chinese. treaties were signed, again without the Chinese.

in the early 1900's, British India occupied Lhasa for a time. the Qing gov't didn't establish direct control again until 1910. they remained in power only a few years, when in 1912-13, the Tibetans expelled the Chinese forces, who surrendered under the "Three Point Agreement".

Tibet remained free of China's rule until the communist invasion in 1950-51.
