  • Just curious about one thing: Was VA-895 signed that way (instead of I-895) so that they could make it a toll road like they did NC 540 (part of the new Triangle Expressway) in North Carolina?

  • @texacobigred42 Not 100% sure but I'm guessing you're right on that.

  • is it me or are you going faster than the speed limit?

  • @terp4life59 The video is sped up 4x the actual speed and I'm usually 5-10 MPH over, which is more pronounced when sped up.

  • @Freewayjim yeah makes sense now because it would be much longer than 9 minutes if you didnt speed it up ive been on i-95 in va many a time and its a very smal bit boring except for the cool stuff you see on the side of the road like that dealership you passed near exit 58

  • its like i'm playing gran turismo lol

  • That's a wild ride :)

    Good Video :)

  • @kd4adv Thank you!

  • i hate it when people who are going the same speed as the right lane stay in the left... if you aren't going faster than the lane to your right than you shouldn't be there to begin with!

  • Our new Gov-elect Bob McDonnell is proposing to up the speed limit to 70mph in some areas of Virginia. It's about time!

  • Yes I think its time to because travaling should be faster its too slow!

  • it already is 70 and has been on some Va interstates like I 85 south of Petersburg to NC... hope he opens the rest areas...

  • Also, Jim, I have been meaning to ask you, out of all the states you've traveled through - which state would you say has the best highway system (design, road conditions, etc)?

  • Georgia, Texas, West Virginia

  • Really? I'd have to take your word on that one because I've only traveled through small parts of each. Out of the states I've traveled, I would say TN gets my vote.

  • TN Designs are flawed, too many "Y" interchanges, newer construction is very good however.

  • I live in Georgia, and I think the roads are absolutely horrific! haha

  • Nooo, our roads are great compared to most places, especially on the east coast.

  • Maybe in Atlanta... but I used to take I-16 to school everyday. Oh My God. It is the road ever! No, I take that back, I-64 in Richmond is bumpy. But I dont see why they can not try to widen 16, because 2 lanes is not suffecient

  • I-16 is not a bad road pavement wise (No interstate in GA is for that matter), it's just boring as hell.

  • Jimbo, made a mistake getting off onto Chippenham Parkway...lol... The 895 bridge complex is impressive.. not sure why no comment.. it is one of the few things betw Richmond and Florida that is... Your videos are great by the way...

  • GOD! 16 from Macon to Savannah. I'd rather die!

  • TN is very good indeed, there are still some very old, substandard parts (downtown Nashville, I-275 Knoxville) though.

Also New Hampshire is excellent considering the weather they get.

  • Texas has some excellent freeways and our interchanges are unparalleled, but some highways, especially in Houston, are not in excellent condition. I prefer asphalted roads (which is almost never the case here in Houston), though I have to say, the newly remodeled, 100% concrete Katy Freeway (I-10 west of Downtown) is by far the most impressive freeway I have ever seen.

I'm also told that New Mexico/Arizona/Utah have some pretty good highway systems.

  • I came back from NC 2 weeks ago, and that raised highway bridge is creepy. It looks like you could see over the wall, and that will freak out most drivers, especially women.

  • It was stop & go for about 15 minutes then it was up to the speed limit until the HOV Lanes near Quantico.

  • The US 1 interchange on I-85 North you went through is also Business US 460, but it is not signed at all.

  • I'm guessing Exit 82 (8:18) was supposed to read US 301?

    Good job as always.

  • Thanks, I caught that after the fact, doh!

  • I love this stretch of I-95 from Petersburg to Washington DC- This part of road carries very heavy traffic!

  • Um, actually the traffic is nothing until you hit Fredericksburg !

  • I just drove this yesterday lol

  • Awesome video, Jim. Nice touch, including the perspective of the VA 895 interchange from the ramp to VA 150. :D

  • Wow these are awesome vids! Keep it up!

  • another good one 5*

  • The first toll plaza was just north of Exit 63 on I-85 - they'd get you for ten cents there. Next toll was at Exit 54 on I-95 just south of Temple Ave - the bridge still widens out for the plaza. Next one was at Exit 67A - use Google Earth and you'll see exactly where. Then just north of 76B. I don't recall another one north of there. There very well might have been one though. And killer vid!

  • Thanks!

I always got a kick out of the 10 cent toll booths on some of the exit/entrance ramps.

  • wow.. jim this is now one of my favorite's great job . 4:50-5:40 that was one awesome interchange..

  • I noticed that VA-895 interchange before... it's gotta be one of the tallest in the country.

  • I liked the part "Speed Limit 60" uh huh. everyone follows that :)

  • I've always thought the merge at 1:43, between NB 85 and 95, was a stupid design. The sign says that the left lane ends, but both lanes just kind of fold into one. Awesome video, as always. The RPT is a fun road to drive, despite its 50s quirks.

  • Another awesome video, Jim!

  • awesome 5*, i love the view of downtown Richmond when you crossed that river

  • Nice video, Jim.

  • Wow, I-85 is a mess in that area. I hope they're repaving it soon, that can't be good for people's tires.

  • We have a lot of roads that look like that in Northern VA. It's basically the state going over the worst parts of the roads because they don't want to spend the money to pave the entire thing. Another tactic is paving half a road instead of the whole thing. Cheapskate tactics to be sure, but something is better than nothing I guess.

  • Really can't even tell these roads used to be the Richmond/Petersburg Turnpike. I guess the small median and the sort makes it a little more clear, but it's still not too discernable that this used to be a "separate" road, so to speak.
