  • This was my second airshow as a 6 year old (after church Fenton the same year). Car sick on the way there, had to piss at the side of the car as we parked up as I was busting and god awful display weather. Still the Vulcan was breathtaking. I was already hooked on aircraft by then but this was just unbelievable. Seeing the Concorde and Vulcan at the same show was awesome. A great nostalgia trip thanks!

  • i love the nose-up touch and go !

  • I saw her at Finngley in 91 (I was 11 at the time)

When we arrived my Dad checked the programme to see what time the Vulcan was flying.

I said something like "whats so special about the Vulcan?"

He laughed and said "you'll see".

When the Vulcan took off - the ground shook and all the car alarms went off.

I was awe struck as she flew over and I heard the famous Vulcan howl. I've loved the plane ever since!

  • Majestic plane!

  • I remember it well, sad day. Actually been in the cockpit too. Glad she is back flying once again. (I do agree about the music tho' shuda let the engines speak 4 themselves)

  • I remember it well, sad day. Actually been in the cockpit too.

  • @superemposed

Sorry to nitpick. Engines are Bristol Olympus 20,000# thrust each

(no reheat).Last Avons were flying in the Lightnings. These are

high velocity flow turbojets and they sound VERY nice thankyou!

  • THREADS!

  • Great Mate. I remember people saying due to the weather the Vulcan would not be showing once again she proved them wrong.

  • good archives great plane

  • those Rolls Royse Avons engines make the ground tremble

  • the year before i was born :(

  • I was stationed at RAF Alconbury from 1966-1969 and saw these a lot. This bring back a lot of memories. Thanks. USAF 1965-1969.

  • I was there that day,Rolling thunder was it's display nickname I think,my dad took me so i wasn't very old.

  • Great video, I was there, first air show I'd been to and the Vulcan blew me away!

  • I was on holiday in bournmouth a couple of weeks ago, while we were staying over the airshow was on the day we were leaving but we managed to see some of it. the vulcan is an amazing plane, the sound was out of the world, a one in a lifetime moment to see that plane.

  • I saw one of those flying over today at an air show. It was unbelievable! The noise it makes is out of this world. Rumbles right through you. Spectacular plane.

  • thanks for posting,i lived in retford and one summer i used to watch 3 vulcans pretty much playing,1 was white,1 was like this but grey underneath, and maybe this one,1983 to 1985 ish ,my memmory on dates is fuzzy .BUT three vulcans doing nose to tail roll`s over the river trent will never be forgotten,go and see the 1 at newark ,cheers fred

  • My Dad took me to Finningley to see the air displays and as a 10 year old i saw... and heard..... and felt...... the "Squadron scramble", Three Vulcans taking off in close order, as the first one got airborne the second was mid runway and the third was setting off, 12 jet engines at full throttle... and at take off they stood on their tails so the ground shook!!!, Fantastic memories!!!

  • I like this pane. it´s beautiful

  • Talk about a thirsty bird. I understand that it took 5 air to air refuelings from Ascension Island for it to make its target over Stanley, East Falkland with a mere 5 minutes of loiter time before it was time to head back. Nonetheless, it was mission accomplished.

    Way to go, John Bull!

    -Respectfully, the United States

  • i think 5 is exadurating becoz it has a range of 3,910 miles

  • I remember this like it was yesterday!

The sound was deafening and the ground shook like there was an earthquake!

I don't think the Argentinians were keen on this plane back in 1982 though!!!!

  • i still remember seeing this beauty at church fenton in the 80's and being a small child i was convinced it was a camoflage concorde

  • i was also there i used to go when i was a kid i was a baby my dad took me every year i miss it

  • i was there on that day & i was surprised how loud the vulcan bomber was

  • im listening in a headset and just to let you know the split audio is simpl annoying

  • Your the only one to complain Trev

  • I was there too! I remember the final fly past with bomb doors open, some one had painted Goodbye, brought a lump to the throat...

  • Great memories...I too was there at this show, I think it wasn't realised at the time that this was going to be it's last display...My lasting memory is of the Blue Angels who did a low level display..I've never seen aircraft so low and over the crowd line..awesome!

  • I was there too, but I can't for the life of me think why I never remember seeing Vulcan!

  • I remember this like it was yesterday, I was 6 at the time, got quite a few videos of this show myself.

  • Thanks Trevor, the Vulcan's awesome 'volume' has got to be the reason for the title THUNDERBALL...(winkwink). Remember June/'91 when a Lancaster, Hurricane, & a Spitfire flew over London? GOD bless AVRO-from the Lank, ARROW to the Vulcan. If only we had an Arrow to join '558...

  • good job it was retired 24 years ago isn't it then? It did help win the Falklands though, and none have been shot down in the 34 years it was in service. Maybe you should consider reading some history books sometime. ;)

  • Not being shot down only counts if it is actually faced against DECENT opposing aircraft.

  • as a yasnk, you know fuck all about the RAF!!!

  • Comment removed

  • yes, it was a spelling mistake, i meant to write wank!!! Anyhow, remember the "Giant Voice" competitions in the 60's? Well, the "lame RAF" fucked you lot over more than once!!

  • The Vulcan was never designed for deep penetration. It was a high altiude aircraft using the Blue Steel stand off nuclear weapon.

that is why we went on to develop the TSR2.

  • The RAF chucked it about a little more than the "vulcan to the sky" people are doing, but then that's understandable and I'm all for them being a little more careful if it means we get to see Vulcan fly for another decade! (here's hoping!)

  • I have to say one of the most beautiful man made things i have ever seen!!

  • I remeber going there as a kid at the time that year, happy memories. :)

  • a masterpeice in avation history awsome

  • I hope it comes back to South Yorkshire, then I don't have to go to the other side of the country to see her.

  • What a design.

  • what a gorgeus aircraft! hero of the falklands war!

  • ur wrong they made a screwed up attempt to bomb an airstrip, in falklands war, hardly heroic

  • You're wrong! A Vulcan dropped 21 x 1000lb bombs on Stanley airfield in the Falklands destroying most of the equipment there and blowing a crater in the runway to prevent Argentine jets using the strip. By the way they did that having flown a third of the way around planet earth for 17 hours. Sounds pretty heroic to me.....!

  • See new XH558!

  • Attention all vulcan fans!!1

This beauty might be flying again, keep your eyes peeled on the news for more info if you're in england in the yorkshire area (not including south yorkshire) look on calander news!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its a beautiful plane isn't it :)

  • Thank you for posting that. I served in Bomber Command then Strike Command at Finningley in the 1960s when it was a Vulcan OCU.

This brought back a lot of memories. If anyone has any film of RAF Finningley in its glory days, I would really like to see it.

    Cheers

    Reg

  • Hello Reg,do you remember the 2 Palfreys ,A Vulcan captain[VERY EROTIC WHEN THE REAR BOGIES TOUCH FIRST AND A GENTLE ROCKING MOTION SETS IN]

  • Hello Reg,do you remember the 2 Palfreys ,A Vulcan captain[VERY EROTIC WHEN THE REAR BOGIES TOUCH FIRST AND A GENTLE ROCKING MOTION SETS IN]

  • I was there and remember this, the feeling in your body is awesome. I'll have to dig out the old cam corder and see if I can find a clip.

  • Very good film.

I saw a Vulcan display at Bournemouth airshow in the late 1980's. It did a similar routine and was awesome. How something so big could move so gracefully is beyond me. The noise was incredible with the aircraft almost becoming part of you as your body shook with the vibrations.

There is one on static display at Newark Air Museum in Notts and its well worth a look.

  • Kingdom for chance to ride her!!!

  • Unfortunately, although there's been a successful first flight, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust are now in desperate need of £150,000 by the end of March in order to restart the test flight program. No corporate sponsor has come forward, and without a decent flow of funds, the future of Vulcan flight operations is now in danger. For people who want to help, they can visit the Vulcan to the Sky website. We must keep this beautiful aircraft in the air!

  • quality excused but the weather... i dont know man

  • This is an historic bit of film, the end of an era as it was, the fact shes up and running again is an awesome prospect and i cant wait to see her at one of the airshows this year. I was 15, and at wroughton a few months earlier helping out on the sally b tent, i remember seeing her cruise into the distance as someone said out loud 'the vulcans going, last time youll see it.'as it disapeared behind the trees, i knew i'd miss the iconic displays she was capable of. cracking video mate, nice one!!

  • Thankyou so much, I'm glad everyone is liking my film.

  • Holy shit what an awesome bomber!!! I'm not very familiar with British air power, why did they take this thing out of service? Such a beautiful aircraft.

  • it is xh 558 not xh588 that is in flyable condition at bruntingthorpe

  • THE VULCAN! best bomber ever built. the mod should ring out a super vulcan.

  • mattmilkscows - you are dead fucking right - bring out an updated contemporary version. Think about this - does Great Britain have a long range bomber? No, so make one and base it heavily on the superb dogs bollocks VULCAN. I like Vulcans, where can I buy? Even if it's only a 4 engine electric ducted fan model.. please where I buy?

  • cheers mate, at least someone agrees with me! these planes were awesome and up to now, no plane has been better in my opinion.

  • Your're right. The most beautiful one at that!

  • Now there's a beautiful aircraft!

  • i too was there for this can anyone tell me where XH588 resides these days been outa the loop for a while

  • It's at Bruntingthorpe Liecester, It flew two weeks ago after a 15 year makover!!! Have you been asleep??

  • no mate i grew up and had to start working for a living and unfortunatly as a result lost touch with a hobby i used to love..time to start again i think

  • Ok,gald you like the vid & are enjoying the hobby again.

    Regards Trev

  • Nice video. I remember it setting off all the car alarms as it climbed out - and now its back!

Avro Vulcan - the inspiration behind the song "C'mon feel the noise" (look it up kids).

  • I grew up near McClellan AFB in Sacramento, Califonia. I would see the occasional VC-10 or Victor K.2, but you ALWAYS knew when a Vulcan was flying in! Without a doubt the loudest aircraft I've ever experienced. Sorely missed...even over here on the other side of the pond!

  • this vid is prob older than me!!! im 14 (born in dec 92)OMG + my dad missed this by 2 yrs(based there 80sommat-89)

  • i was there on this day, amazing footage,, anyone have any of the blue angels ? rememeber ?? because of low cloud, the red arrows could'nt perform !!

  • I have the blue angels as well but i can't get them off the Tape, have a different camera now. 8mm tape.

  • i was there she had farewell goodbye on her bomb doors as i recall, OMG, was that "92" am gerrin old,

  • My house is right at the end of the runway (Bruntingthorpe).... but now I'm in Thailand... I can't believe I missed this :-(

  • did anyone take a vid of todays test flight? did anyone see it?

    x

  • they've done it! XH588 took off earlier today and landed safely. Hopefully we can get making more vulcan videos now.......

  • Awesome. Gives me goosebumps when it goes up for the second time. This, the Mosquito, the F-111 and the P-51 Mustang are my favorites.

As of this moment, I understand XH558 did some engine runs at Bruntingthorpe today. Let's keep our fingers crossed

  • Most impressed with your video comrade

  • Super video. I was there that day too. I remember the shows at Finningley when they had a 'Vulcan scramble'. Four would start up with the cartridge starters and use blast screens like on an aircraft carrier and take off one after the other.

  • reminds me a little bit of flying through time space... breaking down the barrier... the time barrier... time travel... lol... I wonder if that is possible some day...with such a plane

  • sorry about the math... I couldn't help it... But I love the video... reminds me of my flying daydreams... flying like superman throught the sky high above in the bright blue sky

  • was a wee 4 year old on that day, showed my dad this vid and he rememberd it vividly, cant wait to see her and actually remember lol

  • Camera limitations just don't do this old girl any justice when it comes to just how chest poundingly loud she is :D:D can wait to see her again soon

  • A classic.. I was there on the day.. cant wait until it flys again...

  • Gonna join the Air Force! Here I come!

  • You did a mighty fine job for a analogue camera track m8!

  • I used to see Vulcans all the time when I did my RAF basic training at RAF Swinderby in 1977. They used to come over in three's, probably flying from RAF Waddington.

    Great footage mate.

  • Sorry mate, don't know what you are on but what the heck are you talking about??

Make a comment of my video by all means but keep the maths & whatever else out please............

  • You did well there...I'll never forget seeing a Vulcan perform a barrel roll over my then home in Bristol just out of the blue - gob-smacking when you are not expecting it. Would make the jaw drop even if you were expecting it. Don't suppose that will ever be permitted again!

  • many thanks for this great video, very skillful !!!

i am reading a book called vulcan 607 at the moment if any body wants a good read go and buy it

  • And you worry about the quality!! thanks so much for posting this one, i was there that day too and your vid captured it perfectly, apart from that roar of sheer power that you could actually feel. the ground literally really did shake. Wonderful stuff. Thanks again

  • Was ever an aeroplane better named? You didn't just see it and hear it,you felt it,especially at touch-and-goes.

  • I lived on Waddington, and witnessed the flights on a daily basis. I lived at 10 Lancaster Close. These aircraft represent our history and heritage. Imagine seeing the Vulcan for the first time. Airshows, for me, encapsulate a bygone era, a time when I was proud to be British, the old buildings, the stiff upper lip, the uniforms, the sounds and smells...I will stand and watch the vulcan's return flight, and I will cry unashamedly.

  • I was a 8 year old boy at finningley that year. I had always loved the vulcan when she flew past with "FAREWELL" on the bombay doors, I remember just bursting into tears. I can honestly say that there wasnt a dry eye at that display when that happened.

I Hope XH558 does fly again. I visited bruntingthorpe the other day and it shall be flying soon!!!!

God bless the vulcan, thank god it never had to do the job it was designed for but kept the peace!!!

Heres to many years more flying!!!

  • great aircraft but sadly never seen it fly :'( i realy want to see it!!!!!!!

  • It is a wonderful aircraft, please come and see us on the club stand at RIAT

  • Was there that day, and can remember the training flight it did on the Thursday of the week of the airshow. 150 feet, straight and level down the middle of the runway, could hear it coming (and going) from miles away. I hope that XH558 makes a return to Finningley (even if its just a flypast) once it is flying again, as I'm sure that there would be many people who would love to see that... :)

  • Amazing aircraft! I am going to hopefully see it fly again this year at RAF Fairford. It is set to fly at this years RIAT.

  • Wonderful!

tha loudest plane I have ever heard take off!

  • Can't believe they still havnt replaced this aircraft. You'd think that with all the experiences from the Falklands, Kosovo and both Gulf Wars they would realise you need a heavy lift bomber rather than sending aircraft to do 100 sorties to bomb the same place.

  • For 1992 the qualitys great. In comparison to other stuff posted on here its brilliant!

  • I`m lucky enough to live on the end of Waddington runway and remember all the exercises through the 70s and `558 monthly certification flights. Can`t wait to see her back where she belongs.

  • Wow cant wait for the Falklands 25th flypast! Should bring it all flooding back!

  • I was there wih my then wife an baby son..For me it was a very emotional day as since a i was a small boy a Vulcan had been part n parcel of the air show circuit and to see her fly publically for the last time was a tear jerker. And yes my baby son Guy slept thru the Vulcan display!

  • Can't wait to see this bird back where she belongs!!!

  • Probably the finest bomber of it's era.Beautiful aircraft

  • aguante la FAA!!!

  • I was actually there on that day and I still remember it now, even though I was only 7 at the time!!!! It brings back memories watching this video!!

  • God! brings back a few memories for me! I remember growing up in knottingley, and the Vulcan used to pass over us at low level flying mock raids on ferrybridge power Station! Can't wait to see 558 airborne again!

  • Realy great video!!!

  • I cant believe i was 10 when they stopped flying the vulcan. 15 years on i can still hear the roar and feel it too as if it was yesterday. i only hope XH558 get enough funding to fly for several years. great video, nice touch with jean michel jarre's chronology part 1 in back ground.

  • Reminds me of the final flight at Cranwell, Bedford. Still chokes me when they wave the wings. Never mind, lets hope it makes it for the Mall on June 17th (fingers crossed)

  • thanks great video.

  • Sincere thanks for posting this video Trevor

  • What an amazing plane, what was it for again? Was it that 4 minute warning thing to launch nuclear bombs during the Cold War or something?

  • i was there! i was only 8 though, so its not too clear in my memory! can't wait to see it fly again this year!

  • fanbloodytastic video. soon to be back to the sky where she belongs :-)

  • i live in doncaster and im applying for the raf, shame finningly is a commercial airport now id love for it still to be an raf base, especialy if 101 squadron still flew vulcans there

  • A cracking video. It was one of the best display aircraft I ever saw and have seen since. I was at that very show too. Brilliant.

  • Did not see this Display-but did a few Myself.Well 5 of us!!

  • You lucky lucky ba****d. ;-)

  • Bloody marvellous, thanks Trev.

  • This one is awesome! I must admit i never saw her for real, but i´m really hoping that she will be in time for Fairford. Nice One!

  • great video trev , p.s its vulcanboy hehe
