could you seriuosly do another "tutorial" video about how to play what you were playing? i'm serious cuz i'm gonna have to get a real music teacher to figure out what you're doing
Sounds incredible! I have a super comp with JJ kt88's and Im in love with it. Your vid convinced me to give BK pickups a try, going with the miracle man. Awesome playing by the way.
great great chunk man!! that sounds awesome. I wanted to make sure, in the beginning, the letters were cut off in the opening credits, that is a G12 and a V30 in the cab? sounds awesome. I have a nitro, and am seriously thinking of trading it for a Quickrod..just personal taste.
Yessir G12 and a V30 in the 2x12. I've found that I run less gain with the G12 as well. I love both heads but find the QR better with my marshall using band cohorts.
Hey man, sorry I took so long coming back, not been on here for a while. I dont think I've changed much since this vid, so the dials are as follows: Pres 1oc, bass 12.30oc, mid 2oc, treb off, sol 9.30oc, vol 9, gain 1oc, 3rd gear. Clean channel bass 1oc, treb 11oc, vol 11oc, gain 11oc. I think that's the lot.
Love the splawn with BK pickups, have 3 guitars loaded with them, Holydiver set, VHII and Crawler. with this setup its tone for every and clear, will make you a better player
Well all of the Splawn Amp line are voiced similarly to Marshall amplifiers. They have an excellent mid response and the QR in particular is geared towards the Halen/Lynch tonality. If you wanted something with a more modern low end response, you might want to check out the Nitro or Super Comp from Splawn. As tone is a personal thing, I'd suggest trying out the Splawns if you can. Might just be a revelation for you. Hope this helps.
Mine was very brittle and harsh on the gain/distortion so I sold it..Very disappointed.I would choose a stock JMP or JCM over this any day..Just put your favorite distortion in front of it...
Well tone is subjective, maybe Splawns just weren't right for you. I've never found anything brittle or harsh about the tone mind you and I think that this evident from most of the clips here on Yourtube. Check out Zombielolocaust's vids, all great tone and frustratingly well played. Also, I bought these amps so I wouldn't have to add anything. These amps need nothing to improve the gain channel. All the gain you'll ever need.
The Splawn I heard in the music store ruled but the one I bought on EBAY sucked and I kind of had the same problem with the David Bray modded Plexi. The sound clips at 3 were way too loud to capture in a condo setting.I sold it too.I tryed and sold the Deizel and ended up with a stock JCM 800 which I loved I now have a JCM 2000 DSL401 on the way.Not sure what else to say.I am way tired of the tone quest.Marshall still rules imho!
That's cool as I said tone is a very personal thing and an amps history is not always straight forward. I started out simply not wanting a Marshall, as that were so 'common'. Went through a load of alternatives and found that I was after the Marshall tone all along. I think as long as you find the the noise you like, it doesn't matter what brand it is. I'm just glad I've found the tones for me.
Does anybody who owns this amp find it to be too stiff feeling? I'm thinking of ordering one and have heard this complaint from a number of people. Thanks.
My Quick Rod is the warmest sounding amp that I have ever played. Stick some Tung Sol EL34B's in there, and each note will sound like it is wearing an electric blanket.
I think they are. Check out the sound clips on Splawn's website. There is a clip called Mixolydian, or something like that, which has a pretty good sampling of the Quick Rods's range of tones.
Based on discussion with other Splawn owners, I actually have my treble completely off. As you say the amp is naturally bright, so I find this works well. this is not the case for al the Splawn heads mind you. I believe that the Competition head likes having some treble dialed in.
Sup man. I watched your video when looking for new amps. I just ordered a splawn and part of the reason for doing so was because I watched this vid. Watch my channel in about 2 months when I finally receive the thing for a video of me noodling.
Good to know the vids are actually helping out in some way. I liked the noise you had coming out of your Randall, but I think you'll find the Splawn amps have an 'alive' feeling to them. What are you looking to get model wise?
The Randall was an ok amp. It had a bit of buzziness to it.
As far as a model of Splawn, I'm thinking quick rod. I want a tone similar to yours here. Nice and tight, sparkly highs and less boomy than the ones I've had. What cab would you suggest for a sound similar ot this? My current guitar is an ESP Eclipse II with EMGs.
In this clip the 2x12 has a V30 and a greenback. The V30 seems to tame the greenbacks mids a little and gives a nice voice. I also use a stock carvin legacy cab which is all V30's. They say that the V30's are a little vanilla, but I find that they allow the head to shape the sound rather than the speaker. An x pattern of Greenbacks and V30's could be cool. I use a Jim Root Tele and like the noise with the EMGs. Alternately the recommended Splawn cab is a x pattern of governers and Man O wars.
I like the idea of having lots of mids with a little crunch. Maybe I'll get an enclosure from Splawn and use an x patter of V30s and greenbacks. Or maybe I could just get the splawn cab. If I go that route I'd better hurry. I don't want to have a splawn head with no cab to play through...
Thanks a lot for all your info and help. Hopefully the splawn shows up early and I can record some videos soon.
Well the Nitro is Splawn's dark beast. I actually use the QR with the Treble right off due to the brightness of the amp and it still sounds ace. I think I might be getting a little preachy, so I'll leave it there:-).
Hey people, Many thanks for all the good words and Splawn love. I am now a complete convert having armed myself with a Nitro as well. To my ears, the greatest noise out there:-). Watch this space for some Nitro/QR comparisons real soon.
Hi, I tune drop D in this clip and I believe the chords are D, C and B with some slidey F-G on the low D. The guitar is a custom I had made based on a Blues Saraceno Samick guitar, the pickups are Bare Knuckle Miraclemans and I have the selector set in the middle which gives me the inner and outer coils. Hope this helps.
Glad your liking the Splawn tones. I'd say this is living room levels and I have the Amp running at 50Watts to help control the volume. The Volume on the clean is probably between 7.30 and 8, so really low. The Splawn only has Bass, Treble, Volume and Gain controls on the clean channel. I have the Bass at 1.30, Treble at 11 and the gain around 10. Straight into the amp on this occasion.
Sorry for the delay on getting back. Mullards in this one. The odd thing is that the Guitar actually makes the odd ringing noise that can be heard, something to do with the direct mounts apparently!
I don't personally think the cleans need to be quite that bright, but it is taste. Besides, it doesn't sound like anything that couldn't simply be dialed out.
It might be the vid mic but the clean sounds terrible?I guessing these amps are not made for there clean tones, conversely you cant beat the overdrive yikes!
Tone is a very much down to personal taste and I've always found that the clean on the QR very useable. You won't be hearing fender cleans I guess. I'll be posting some more clean tracks soon with a strat, so i'll think you'll get a better idea of the sounds achievable.
The ringing sound has got to be the camera microphone dealing with too much volume. My Quick Rod does not have any kind of ringing sound going on, clean or dirty.
No problem at all. In this vid I'm straight into the amp and I think it comes off okay. For riffage I would never do anything else, but when I want to tinker around lead wise I'll throw my G. Major in there. For home playing and in the studio, I get all the delay and room noise with all the tone. It's great fun and a pleasure to play.
Soory to all those who have left questions and I've been slow getting back. It's been crazy busy at this end. I've just finished work on some new tracks in the studio that are riddled with QR and so far its all sounding amaizing:-). Thanks for the good words RSC and crittoprr, the amp really speaks for itself. Alot of people say that the QR is unforgiving and I believe it is but even with my slop it just sounds amazing.
I forgot to ask previously, are you using something like a THD Hot Plate or a volume pedal in the loop or does the Quick Rod really sound that good at low volume. I am considering getting either the Quick Rod or the Marshall JVM 205H 50 watt head. The JVM's actually do sound pretty good at lower volumes. I think the Splawn would probably beat the JVM tone wise even though I was impressed when I tried the JVM.
In these clips I am running at half power and I love the tone that I get from the amp. I also done all the recording using the half power setiing and I'm very pleased with the results. I've tried a few attunuator solutions but I feel they rob the amp of tone. 50 Watt through my 2x12 gives me a great low volume tone. Alternately the Splawn Competition will pop down to 25 Watts and although it lacks dedicated clean sounds awesome. Check user Zombielolocaust for the good stuff.
Thanks that really helps. I found a Splawn dealler who will sell me a Quick Rod for $1800.00 out the door. Thanks again. All of the Zombielolcaust videos are great too.
Where is the amps volume knob set in this video? Is it just barely cracked on? I have read things on the Splawn Forum and Harmony Central where people have said that the Quick Rod gets real loud, real quick, as you slightly turn the knob. I have read that stage volume is only the 9:00 position, and that playing a Quick Rod at low volume is like trying to drive a dragster in your living room. The low volume sounds that you are getting in your video sound great. I am very impressed.
I'd say that the volume on this one is 7.30-7.45 on the 50 watt setting. I love the fact that this amp sounds so great at these volumes. I also have the solo boost volume on which helps to beef the tone a little.
Thanks again, your video is really helping me as I decide on what amp to get. It will either be the Splawn Quick Rod or the Marshall JVM 205H. I appreciate your comments and you sound great.
After a few tests it seems its a little of the camera mic and mainly its the guitar:-@. Not really sure as to why but the Bare Knucles just sound a little odd through the QR?? I'll post another clip soon with an alternate setup methinks.
Yea,I was thinking the mic on the camera is pushed to its peak at least thats the sound.
But that splawn still comes through good and brown imo.
Do you find the splawns make your mistakes harder to hide? I may could have used a pedal to help my sloppy playing but the splawns seemed very sensitive. But nothing beats the tone though imo. Some are as good imo but none really better for my taste.
But your a better player than me I been playing maybe 4 years.
he shame is I've been playing for too long and should be a lot better than I am. Lazy is what I am. I can get by though. I honestly think that the Splawn has made me a better player as it's forced me to work harder. Best practice help ever;-).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Overinging guitar maybe??? Have you tried muting the strings behind the nut or bridge? I see a lot of guys put tape over the strings in the studio. I use some foam underneath on my Les Pauls for teh metal! Either way, Cheers! And PLEASE do more Splawn vidz, especially really heavy riffage. Pretty pretty pleazzzz?!?!?
I turn a Maxon OD808 on the clean channel to dirty it up, but Iturn it off when switching to the gain channel. In this case I have the OD808 Overdrive set right off, so it's effectively a near-clean boost. 3rd Gear on the Quickrod has more than enough gain going for it, so no need to boost her.
as time goes on, I see that the QR is just killing any marshall model out.. period !! actually they are killing many of the manufactures models. I wish i had never sunk thousands into amps and just went straight to the splawn. Either always too flubby in the bottom end or that and too fizzy in gain. The splawn models just scream tone. I am 100 % convinced now !! great video dude !!
tone of the splawn is great, is this the new clean channel? I am getting my nitro in june, cant wait. Nice and original graphic on the head also. Oh yeah and smooth playing there
Thanks man, The Splawns are just excellent. I'm hopeful to get a Nitro at some stage as I love the QR's Tone. Maybe in a similar finish, so they match. Thanks again and enjoy the Nitro!
Hey Jaymes, Thanks for the good word. I think the amp speaks for itself, just straight in for the cleans. I'm hopeful to do a few more samples with the QR and my Elmwood, so we'll see how that goes. Thanks again.
Dude, this is some of the BEST clean tones I have heard from a QuickRod. Can't wait to get one someday! I got to your video from the Splawn boards, I'm 'jaymes' there..thanx for the great sampler, your playing is awesome, no need for any discalimers on your part...

Look forward to more vids. peace

he shame is I've been playing for too long and should be a lot better than I am. Lazy is what I am. I can get by though. I honestly think that the Splawn has made me a better player as it's forced me to work harder. Best practice help ever;-).

Pretty pretty pleazzzz?!?!?

are ya boosting that?
f2kflyer 3 years ago
I turn a Maxon OD808 on the clean channel to dirty it up, but Iturn it off when switching to the gain channel. In this case I have the OD808 Overdrive set right off, so it's effectively a near-clean boost. 3rd Gear on the Quickrod has more than enough gain going for it, so no need to boost her.

Thanks. Nice playing btw.

as time goes on, I see that the QR is just killing any marshall model out.. period !! actually they are killing many of the manufactures models. I wish i had never sunk thousands into amps and just went straight to the splawn. Either always too flubby in the bottom end or that and too fizzy in gain. The splawn models just scream tone. I am 100 % convinced now !! great video dude !!

what are your settings? killer sound!

tone of the splawn is great, is this the new clean channel? I am getting my nitro in june, cant wait. Nice and original graphic on the head also. Oh yeah and smooth playing there

Thanks man, The Splawns are just excellent. I'm hopeful to get a Nitro at some stage as I love the QR's Tone. Maybe in a similar finish, so they match. Thanks again and enjoy the Nitro!

nice tone !!! Splawn QR is one killer amp ! what tubes are in it?
rrguitar1 3 years ago
Thanks rr, The QR is loaded with EL34 Mullards in this case. The QR is a weet machine, no doubt!

Love the QR! Good tones! Is that 2x12 open back?
edguyrocks 3 years ago
Hey Edguy, closed back cab based on a marshall 2x12. I'm hoping to get an x pattern of Greenbacks and V30s in the Legacy cab.

Paul, you rock! nice playing, and the cleans sound amazing....got the bass turned all the way down?
scoobwick69 3 years ago
Hey scoob, the bass is kicking around 13:00 on both clean and dirty. I'm still tweaking but I dig the noise right now.

yea seriously, i have a QR and a G&L strat and my cleans arent that nice! congrats! and on 50 watt mode?! wow!
steveanders86 3 years ago
Hey Jaymes, Thanks for the good word. I think the amp speaks for itself, just straight in for the cleans. I'm hopeful to do a few more samples with the QR and my Elmwood, so we'll see how that goes. Thanks again.

Dude, this is some of the BEST clean tones I have heard from a QuickRod. Can't wait to get one someday! I got to your video from the Splawn boards, I'm 'jaymes' there..thanx for the great sampler, your playing is awesome, no need for any discalimers on your part...
