  • greatest book ever, please check out my trailer..

  • Im pretty sure they let him into that film school, so he would have learned how to direct, tell a story, all thay

  • some people get it and he knows how to use his resources. most dont.

  • the guy has talent and he understands all aspects.

  • is it possible to be a one man filmaker these days?

  • @vicehoundelite Sure, totally. It becomes a challenge when you get into the biz, but I'd say a competent, even successful and compelling film can have one mind driving it. Cast and other crew is pretty essential though.

  • @runeshai Right on! I'm shooting a documentary on my own, without any crew. Inspired (not only, but also) by Robert Rodriguez. This man is one of my heros!

  • one word ....... AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you so much for this clip..its fantastic, I just ordered the book also. What an inspiring review.

  • @Fitmamma1 Thanks! You might also check out Stu Maschwitz's book The DV Rebel's Guide. His blog ProLost is also interesting, if you're into technical filmmaking stuff.

  • Damn! I just finished film school and used my life savings. SIKE! Film schools is for untalented suckers with no vision & balls!

  • get a pop filter for your microphone!!! it pops horribly

  • He is a inspiration to me too, but what i think is kind of funny. not funny haha, but funny weird (from bedhead one of rodriguez movies) is that i made movie kind of like he did without even knew who he was. then I one day discovered him at a search on film school and I found out that he made movies kind of like me. He just did it so much better. so after that I have Just Study him and his work more and more.

  • Great video

  • Thanks!

  • yeah i was once a omg hes amazin, but theres lots of holes in the "become hollywood filmmaker over night anyone can do it" in the book he was gurranteed to sell the film even if it was crap, he went to film school and the stuff tht would cost us thousends he had a mate to lend it off.

  • fyi-- rodriguez went to UT Austin Film School

  • @jakesnider True he attended the school, but he encourages us not to go because he realized they couldnt teach him how to tell a good story, sure they could teach him how to use and operate a camera and even how to write, but as far as making an original story and bringing it to life your way-thats something film schools can never do.

  • Very nice piece. Just to let you know, you should check out Carlos Gallardo a little more closely as a producer and writer. He had a lot more to do with "El Mariachi" than just star and bring in the money.

  • Yea...I've been somewhat curious as he's been involved in all the rest of the Mexico movies...Rodriguez has a nice team going on for himself with Gallardo and Avellan. And his production house is ridiculous. Thanks for the recommend.

  • great book. I read it along time age. i reccomend any starting filmmaker read it.

  • You have to understan that it's him that's telling the story. I'm sure he is probably exagerrating a little to make himself seem like a God. If RR never came up with his famous story of selling his body to science, etc, He wouldn't be where he is today. He knew a creative story would sell his film. Don't beleive everything RR says and for sure DO NOT try to be like him by making a 7,000 piece of crap. Many have tried to do what he did but few have actually succeded by doing it the RR way.

  • goodson88, you are SOO RIGHT. i have read all of robert's books sev times and after a while, some things started to not add up. like, he said he couldnt go on mex tv interviews cause he dont speak spanish. well then HOW DID HE EDIT EL MARIACHI? also he says he 1st saw salma in a mex tv interview. How could he understand her? there are other things too. good point, goodson

  • there are people that are able to understand spanish (at least some) and not being able to speak it as they usually hear it from parents or even friends, and have no necessity in speaking the language.

  • 1.- Maybe he understands it but can't speak it (I should know, I have some Mexican-American friends like that).

2.- He said he "SAW" her, in which case, I'm sure he didn't pay attention to her words, as much as her "physical aspect," and picturing her in some sort of scene.

I'm not trying to be rude man, this is is just my point of view...good questions, though.

  • thats true, even if you made terminator for $7k you would still have someone rip u off. He know people.

  • Advances in digital technology has helped novice film makers develop themselves. But at the same time it has drown the scene with too much competition. If i do walk away with a lesson from Robert is that its best to make a full feature. I hate shorts. They never really get you noticed. He made a full movie, made VHS tapes and sent it to everybody and their mothers. Write and try to get a full feature done. Be smart and use what you have. Make your GF do a nude scene, i don't care. Just do it!!

  • I love the Ten Minute Film School chapter.

  • makes sense...

  • thats what ive been wondering all the time... is it worth to spend $35000 to study at the nyfa... hmm

  • i just bought this book on amazon i cant wait for it to arrive!

  • Awesome, enjoy :p.

  • he's always wereing hat

  • Robert Rodriguez "Rocks"

Films school is not necessarily a bad thing.

I learned a lot from going to film school but it doesn't mean I am going to do it the "Hollywood" way.

I am still Indy and always will be.

    Awesome Video Dude.

    .

  • I just like the indy filmmaking vibe more than the industry one I've gotten so far. It's more fun, more comrade-based, inspired, as opposed to a job or a paycheck. But you're right, you can learn lots both ways.

  • I like how he did the sound by recording it close up after the shot was over with a cheap cassette recorder and dubbed it in later in post. When it didn't sync up he would just cut away to a dog or something. No sound guy to pay or feed or house.

    Smart.

  • Yea, he had a pretty sweet approach where he just did everything possible and worked it all into something that made sense. He wasn't really constrained by what must be done, he just molded the whole project to the resources he had available. And it worked. That's I think why I admire him so much, because that's the coolest, hardest form of filmmaking.

  • i read the book to, but i really like robert rodriguez for his 10 min cooking school videos, he is really a cool guy, very nice clip, keep up the good work

  • Yea, those cooking videos are great too. And tasty! The ones I've made so far have been, anyway. I'll be excited to find some time to make some more when I'm done with school.

  • its a good book.

  • Thanks :). Awesome, yea, it was a good one. Also I'd recommend The DV Rebel's Guide if you're into the sort of how-to of actually making low-budget movies.

  • Great presentation man!

    Kudos to you.

It's cool to see other ppl who are also (aspiring) filmmakers who are inspired by Robert Rodriguez man! And what really made your presentation cool for me was Siente Mi Amor. I've actually used it in a vid of mine, come check it out if you want (caught inside a dream). I'm interested in your vids after this presentation so im gonna check out what you've made!

  • Thanks man, sounds awesome. Glad you liked the video. I haven't uploaded in a while, but I'm going to put my VFX reel on here once I finish school next year. I know that's a whole year away, but I'm hoping to do in-progress reels as the terms end. Next weekend marks the end of one, so I'll try to get something out by then if I can. Enjoy the videos :).

  • cool man, im going to read that book.

  • Awesome. Glad I could offer a successful recommendation.

  • Thanks I love the Song. I have watched this Video a million times and it always inspires me to be better and don't settle for less.

  • Hahaha, awesome, thanks!! That's great to hear. I really love this guy's work ethic and approach to making movies - and just life in general. And there's always some great music in his films, and they're always really great fun to watch. If they're not that brilliant in some aspect, they make up for it in how much fun it is to watch. I can't think of anyone better to attempt to "redefine the movie-watching experience" like they did with Grindhouse. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • Whats the Name of the song in the backround?

  • The first one's the theme from the Once Upon A Time In Mexico soundtrack, and the second with female vocals is Siente Mi Amor, sung by Salma Hayek, also off the Once Upon A Time In Mexico soundtrack. Thanks for watching, it's great music and a great set of movies (and a great book, too!)

  • Hey, rune...

This is "tabascoman77" again. Just lettin' you know that YouTube axed my account because I had copyrighted stuff from Major League Baseball on my site so I restarted again.

I am re-favorite'ing your report on RR as I did the last time and subscribing to you again. :)

    Take care!

  • Heh thanks. Damn, that's a bummer. Sorry to hear it. But nice to see you back again heh. And thanks for re-favoriting my video. I'm going to be putting up a new short film soon, I've spent the last few days compressing it. And I hope to put up two to three more soon too. See you 'round.

  • I look forward to seeing it! :)

    Take care of yourself, man...

  • Thanks. You too. Actually there's two going up, and soon a third hopefully, once I get a copy of it back.

  • awsome vid rodrigues is an awsome film maker.10 stars lol

  • Great,great,great Work!

  • Thanks a lot :).

  • Nice job. A-plus!

  • Good job! Robert Rodriguez was an inspiration of mine as well.

  • He's a great guy to be inspired by. Have you seen any of his behind the scenes stuff on his DVDs?

  • Noob! =)

  • Noob! =)

  • Nice!!! Well done, nicely made. Loved From Dusk Till Dawn and El Mariachi, pretty good works, the guy's great.

  • Great report. I hope you got an A on this because it's that good.

Rodriguez is one of my idols because he's very positive and has a smarter filmmaking philosophy. He reminds me a lot of George Lucas in that vein. Lucas just lights and shoots now and does everything himself.

    Great job.

  • Thanks, all you guys. I agree, I admire Rodriguez a lot, he's very inspiring. If you ever get a chance to check out the extras on the Once Upon A Time In Mexico DVD, he gives a tour of his house and the studios he works out of, that's also very inspiring, it gets my blood pumping! Thanks guys, and yes, I did get an A, my teacher was very impressed.

  • Cool!

Yeah, I have Once Upon a Time in Mexico AND the Sin City SE DVD set. He does DVD's like no other filmmaker because his featurettes are so fun. I posted both of his "10-Minute Cooking Schools" on my YouTube page. :) Got to cook both, too. Good food! :)

  • I want to cook both, I should get to trying those out, that'd be real fun. He's an awesome guy. I think I might start buying all his DVDs just for the extras, if not for the movie too, so I can learn to cook from them!

  • Well said. I can't wait to see what he does for the "Grindhouse" DVD when it comes out months from now. :)

  • Yea, I hadn't thought of that. I'm more interested in his film than Tarantino's, but it should be interesting to watch both. I wonder what he'll think of to cook for that one. I'm going to have to go out and get all his DVDs, there isn't anything like this on the Spy Kids DVDs is there?

  • I like both Quentin and Rob. :) Both know what film is. I don't think the Spy Kids DVD's have anything on it like that. I think that Mexico and Sin City are the only DVD's that had anything.

  • I need to buy that book...

  • thanks for yout the post
