  • That opening line is so warm. What is happening in this part of the opera? What character is she performing?

  • @blktenor

Cunizza is the "new" love of the tenor, Riccardo, who has effectively dumped the soprano,Leonora (daughter of the baritone, Oberto).

Cunizza knows nothing of Riccardo's past history...but when she learns of what he did to Leonora, she will have nothing to do with him and even tries to protect Leonora - particularly after Riccardo kills Oberto in a duel.

Verdi's second opera quite beautiful - and evocative of Bellini. There's a great recording from '77 with S. Estes and A Gulin.

  • @JoanLorraineN Thanks for the info Joan! I love bel canto operas, especially the obscure ones!

  • @blktenor

Me, too blktenor! "Obscure" Donizetti and early Verdi are such a great new world! If you haven't heard these, try Verdi's Il Corsaro and Stiffelio - FABULOUS - and there are recordings of Angeles Gulin in both of these.

Also - if you've not heard Poliuto, Caterina Cornaro, Maria di Rohan and Gemma di Vergy (all by Donizetti), these are also well worth the listening. ENJOY!

  • @JoanLorraineN I'll have to try those. Thanks!

  • She is rapidly becoming my favorite singer of all time.

  • I feel the same way. Wish Verdi could have heard her sing this aria.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this piece. Such a great voice!
