Like other things in life it's not what you use, but how you use it; a guitarist could sound crap through a Carbon Copy Delay, but it would have nothing to do with the pedal. Carl Verheyen uses it, and he can afford anything.
I have this pedal and have always been very happy with it but a guy at uni says its cheap crap with a cheap sound! What do other Carbon Copy owners think? I was surprised to hear that people are saying that. He said the Eventide is a decent delay but it looks a bit on the expensive side.
It does create that 70's tone very well indeed. I gave this a test drive at fox uk music (local store) and although I didnt buy it on this occasion but the music retailer were more than willing to give me a great price down from RRP, and throw in a reduced price on a Dunlop 'DI Brick'
the construction of this pedal allows me to use my toes to adjust the pedal while im playing. cause some crazy oscillations n stuff without having to take my hands off my guitar. i love it!!!
@HandreyAlex That depends on how important modulation is to you.
If you want the sea sick vibrato sounds to make your repeats just a tad more interesting, the memory boy is for you, and if you want more of a clean, crisp repeat where modulation that leans more towards tape is an option, go for the Carbon Copy.
You have two different kinds of delay in two different boxes.
a standard 9 volt adapter should work, and if you ever consider building a pedal board i suggest you invest in a power block, this plugs into 1 outlet space and powers all of your pedals.
@Comocks set the delay time to a short setting, and turn the feedback down so that you only get one repeat. turn the mix up so that it's about as loud as your dry signal. the delayed note should fit exactly in between each note that you play.
@Sean2592 sorry to tell you that i am pretty sure EVH used an echoplex. they are a tape delay and are hard to come by and very expensive. I am pretty sure this is correct. one web site says:
"On the first album, one can hear the slow phase effect of an MXR Phase 90 pedal on many sections. He also used an old Echoplex EP3 tape echo unit as well as an MXR Flanger. " -- saw one for $895.00 - i used to have one and it was awesome...
@GuitarGod94XxXx You should be able to use the Boss adapter on the Carbon Copy. I've used my Boss adapter on my MXR Phase 90 with no problems, as both the MXR pedals are 9v. Hope this helps?
@96lolstar Analog=typically shorter delay times, sounds dark, such as the echo you hear in this video. Digital=typically longer delay times, repeats are an exact replication of the notes you are playing.
/this thing really lacks ambience compared to other analog delays. Its kinda one note and thick sounding, rather than warm abience, its going back.....Im getting the Malekko.
Am I the only who has problems with Regen pot? when i put it more then a half ( more then 12 o clock) and stop playing my amplifier goes crazy and i need to shut down pedal or remove regen effect.... please help?
@Slash4evah That's not so much a problem as a feature. In an analog pedal, the regeneration control is a feedback loop fed by the power supply. With short decay times and high regen settings, more power is added into the signal in each repeat than actually decays in the first place, creating a positive feedback loop. You can get some fantastically obnoxious and noisy sounds that way. If that's not what you're after, you have to keep the regen down relative to the delay time.
I have the Boss DD7. It has a lot of effects. . I dont want radical delay for country and blues. I like this pedals tone and simple controls. Putting the DD7 on ebay.
This is an amazing pedal. Ive gotten it to sound good for Echoes(Pink Floyd) and Where the streets have no name (U2). It can cover just about anything, very Gilmour-esque. If your thinking about a delay, get this!
Killer videos, thanks Andy! I notice on a lot of Andy's videos there is almost a 12 string like sound when he plays; anyone know if that's the amp? It's kinda like high notes are being struck but it's more of a resonance overtone (hard to explain I guess). Closest thing I can equate it to would be as if a pog was being used. I sometimes get a similar sound from my vox. I had to listen a bunch of times because I thought it was a chord being played in a high position.
They are called volume swells and you just "swell" the volume knob on your guitar and it gives you a cool sound. Try looking up some videos. Its an easy trick that sounds sweet.
I've got the MXR carbon copy and a very old Boss dd-3(japan) and while they are similiar they are worlds apart at the same time. The MXR is a little brighter and more modern sounding. The mod switch is far from subtle to my ears. It can almost become a second chorus pedal very quick. The boss on the other hand is far more warm and seems to decay a little nicer. I like both but seem to always go back to the Boss delay. Wish the MXR had a level control on it. Its either on or off.
I see many, many guitarist have this pedal and the Line6 DL4 delay pedal as well going at the same time.. what is the need for 2 different delay pedals? Also, how many distortion/overdrive pedals is typical for a guitarist to have on a board?
@bgardner123 Hey. The mxr gives you delays. Repeats. ANd the line6 gives you a lot, lot of other fun stuff (looping etc.) The delay effect of the pedals are different. Many would prefer this pedal when only using delay. Some guitarist use a booster to their amp's overdrive, som use one nice distortion pedal, some mix them, others only boost their clean amp a little, and so on. Mike Stern uses 2 or 3 drive pedals to build up his solos.
I like to play atmostpheric, spacey-like sounds in my songs, and I saw that you guys did reviews of the carbon copy and the electroharmonix stereo delay with hazarai- which one would you recommend for me?
this pedal has a thing that the EHX memory toy doesn't have: there are two trims, two little knobs inside, that allows you to change the depth and the speed of the modulation!
which delay pedal would get best use for me playing lots of diffrent styles, the MXE carbon or the boss DD im not really sure what gives each one its edge.
@Holykatzbob run 2 to 4 delay pedals together. this is how you get the best sounding ambient effects. don't use reverb pedals or anything. just get several delays. like the Carbon Copy, Memory Man, DD-20 or something. or get a digital multi-effects like line 6 makes and make it simulate 4 delays running together.
From what I hear, the sound is more transparent then the Ibanez AD9 (which I own and have on my pedalboard). This doesn't seem (unlike the AD 9) to put any gain into the tone when the mix knob gets turned up, which is nice. I also like that the time goes out to 600ms (although I probably would know what to play against that amount of time). The mod button - I could live without this. Not a big fan of emulating the poorer aspects of 1950's tape echo technology. And live, it won't be heard anyway.
@sambo103 The key to that sound is volume swells with chorus. You could get close with the modulation and a the delay set to a reverb sound, but there isn't any delay on his guitar. Good luck,
@sambo103 check out the strymon bluesky reverberator....it would do it ....im gonna get one when i get the money....they are amazing....they also have a digital tape echo thats amazing as well....and no i dont work for em...haha i just think there pedals are awesome
I just sold my Malekko 616 cus of my budget, but I will be buying another delay around Xmas, and I dont know whether to get this or the 616 again. The 616 had its good qualities. This seems almost too subtle. How would this sound thru an FX loop in a JCM 800? Does this fatten the dry tone at all? Would this match up well with the 616? The 616 was almost too dull in true bypass mode and too HiFi in buffered mode
i used to have one of these, my friend traded me his stupid line6 echo park for it. i regret it completely. i then sold it. now i have a tc elec. nova delay. im getting ready to buy another one of these to go with my nova. this is the best sounding analog delay ive ever heard. i cannot wait to own one again!
is this pedal good for adding delay to solos? i mainly want to use it for stuff like gary moore and other in general delay stuff, as well as welcome to the jungle by gnr..
@BlueSkies1 The trim pots are 2 extra adjustments for fine tuning the modulation. Just take off the back cover and use a tiny flat screwdriver to adjust the speed and depth. If you like it the way it is, there's no need to adjust.
wait, there isn't a volume knob? so if i were gonna play like a loud live show, would it be too quiet, and if i were to play it in my bedroom, would it be too heavy. I'm looking for a nice delay pedal, for kind of in the background sounds for my solos. i want it kinda quieter.
@giantrobot9000 I've got an old discontinued Boss RV-3 from back in the day that I love. Keep in mind this was before everyone started hating Boss. It sounds a bit more mellow than most digital delays and can give you reverb at the same time. It's my favorite pedal, give it a shot.
What is a good digital delay to go along with this (for $150 or less)? I like to have both types available. Leaning towards a Line 6 DL4 at the moment.
@ProGuitarShopDemos true but how would it sound with a little overdrive? I probably don't know as much as the pgs crew but whenever anyone uses distortion from their amp, they usually put the delay in the loop. is this true?
@DdRumMa729 - Nope, not necessarily. Effects loops weren't common on amplifiers until relatively recently, and even now a lot of amps don't have them. Many classic rock records were made on cranked tube amps with pedals in the front.
@ProGuitarShopDemos I have a Carbon Copy delay and I have noticed that the pedal gets clouded and terrible sounding if I run it through the front of my amp with distortion. Do you know why that is? It sounds fine in the effects loop, although it lacks some of the sparkle and volume that I got through the front end on clean tones.
@Jakeistoocool143 - Hard to say. Pedals will react differently with every rig, you just have to experiment to figure out what works best for you. You might try it in a different position in your pedal lineup.
@ProGuitarShopDemos Why do u think this is 50 dollars more than the EH Mem, Toy? They are basically the same besides the internal trim pots on this. Do u think this has a better quality since its more expensive? Im stuck between this and that and my local shop doesn't have both to try out.
@ProGuitarShopDemos Does this have a warmer, darker tone, than the Malekko? How would u compare them, cus I dont have a place to try them both. I'll get the Malekko from you if u convince me.
Its because you are distorting a repeated signal. You always have to put your delay and time based effects after your distortion source. In this case if your are using your amps dirty channel for distortion tone, you should use your time based effects in the amps effects loop. Otherwise you will get a crappy distorted-delayed mess.
@Jakeistoocool143 All delays will sound like that at the front of an amp, fine when clean but if you're using the amps' pre amp distortion then it will sound terrible. If however you use a stompbox distortion it will sound fine, once the delay is after it...
Best to use it in the loop between the pre and power amp if using a onboard overdrive channel on the amp, hope this helps..
@Jakeistoocool143 That is why I depend on pedals for my distortions, fuzzs, and crunches. Unless you find the "perfect" overdrive in an amp that has an effects loop that will always happen. Look up information on what order to put your pedals
@Jakeistoocool143 I get what you mean. I own one also. Mess around with the eq and your pickup configuration, i know it sounds a bit pointless but it actually helps allot. And the settings that you have when running through the effects loop probably wont sound the same when running it through the front of the amp, well atleast for my amp it doesnt. At first it sounded like rubbish, now i can get some great tones out of it, so just play around with it for a while and it should workout just fine.
@ProGuitarShopDemos What would u say the major tonal difference between this and the Malekko is? Thanks for the help earlier. I called but I'm still trying to decide.
@th1nkman I own the Carbon Copy Delay, Distortion III, and the Custom Shop Compressor (before I owned the Dyna Comp). I have loved all of these pedals and have never had any issues with them. I only wish that some of the less expensive MXR pedals were built with a brighter led light.
great review, i wish everyone on youtube did reviews like yours

I just sold my Malekko 616 cus of my budget, but I will be buying another delay around Xmas, and I dont know whether to get this or the 616 again. The 616 had its good qualities. This seems almost too subtle. How would this sound thru an FX loop in a JCM 800? Does this fatten the dry tone at all? Would this match up well with the 616? The 616 was almost too dull in true bypass mode and too HiFi in buffered mode
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
@theShowStopper321
yeah, i wasn't crazy about my 616's tone either...it just didn't sound the way i wanted it to.

Could i get an Eric Clapton "Cocaine" solo delay with this pedal?
carlmagnus9 1 year ago
@carlmagnus9 yes! for sure
VKzGibson 1 year ago
@carlmagnus9 There is no delay on that solo. There are just two guitars playing towards the end of the solo.

i used to have one of these, my friend traded me his stupid line6 echo park for it. i regret it completely. i then sold it. now i have a tc elec. nova delay. im getting ready to buy another one of these to go with my nova. this is the best sounding analog delay ive ever heard. i cannot wait to own one again!

why does it make that sound when you turn the pedal knobs? it sounds so weird...how do get rid of that sound?

what does it mean on the MXR website that there are internal trim pots? I have had this pedal for almost a year and I didnt know that
BlueSkies1 1 year ago
@BlueSkies1 The trim pots are 2 extra adjustments for fine tuning the modulation. Just take off the back cover and use a tiny flat screwdriver to adjust the speed and depth. If you like it the way it is, there's no need to adjust.

wait, there isn't a volume knob? so if i were gonna play like a loud live show, would it be too quiet, and if i were to play it in my bedroom, would it be too heavy. I'm looking for a nice delay pedal, for kind of in the background sounds for my solos. i want it kinda quieter.
fallingspears77 1 year ago
@fallingspears77 The "mix" knob is the volume knob.
kramerblues89 1 year ago
@fallingspears77 if you kept the mix knob down it wouldnt be as prevalent. that would keep it quieter..

@giantrobot9000 I've got an old discontinued Boss RV-3 from back in the day that I love. Keep in mind this was before everyone started hating Boss. It sounds a bit more mellow than most digital delays and can give you reverb at the same time. It's my favorite pedal, give it a shot.
Seishinbunretsusho 1 year ago
What is a good digital delay to go along with this (for $150 or less)? I like to have both types available. Leaning towards a Line 6 DL4 at the moment.

he said if you turn the mix all the way up, you still hear the original signal? that defeats the purpose of mix control.

@ohnoitshoward I think the mix control on this pedal is like a "Level" control- how loud the delayed notes are.

recommended with amps with effects loops only?
arnyarny77 1 year ago
@arnyarny77 - The amp we used in the video ( Fender DRRi ) has no effects loop, if that tells you anything.

@ProGuitarShopDemos true but how would it sound with a little overdrive? I probably don't know as much as the pgs crew but whenever anyone uses distortion from their amp, they usually put the delay in the loop. is this true?
DdRumMa729 1 year ago
@DdRumMa729 - Nope, not necessarily. Effects loops weren't common on amplifiers until relatively recently, and even now a lot of amps don't have them. Many classic rock records were made on cranked tube amps with pedals in the front.

@ProGuitarShopDemos I have a Carbon Copy delay and I have noticed that the pedal gets clouded and terrible sounding if I run it through the front of my amp with distortion. Do you know why that is? It sounds fine in the effects loop, although it lacks some of the sparkle and volume that I got through the front end on clean tones.
Jakeistoocool143 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143 - Hard to say. Pedals will react differently with every rig, you just have to experiment to figure out what works best for you. You might try it in a different position in your pedal lineup.

@ProGuitarShopDemos Why do u think this is 50 dollars more than the EH Mem, Toy? They are basically the same besides the internal trim pots on this. Do u think this has a better quality since its more expensive? Im stuck between this and that and my local shop doesn't have both to try out.
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
@ProGuitarShopDemos Does this have a warmer, darker tone, than the Malekko? How would u compare them, cus I dont have a place to try them both. I'll get the Malekko from you if u convince me.
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143 put it after your distortion, i do and it sounds awsome
lantyboy 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143
Its because you are distorting a repeated signal. You always have to put your delay and time based effects after your distortion source. In this case if your are using your amps dirty channel for distortion tone, you should use your time based effects in the amps effects loop. Otherwise you will get a crappy distorted-delayed mess.
Good luck.
bertorollocoe 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143 All delays will sound like that at the front of an amp, fine when clean but if you're using the amps' pre amp distortion then it will sound terrible. If however you use a stompbox distortion it will sound fine, once the delay is after it...
Best to use it in the loop between the pre and power amp if using a onboard overdrive channel on the amp, hope this helps..
jamesm5744 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143 That is why I depend on pedals for my distortions, fuzzs, and crunches. Unless you find the "perfect" overdrive in an amp that has an effects loop that will always happen. Look up information on what order to put your pedals
thunderheart530 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143 I get what you mean. I own one also. Mess around with the eq and your pickup configuration, i know it sounds a bit pointless but it actually helps allot. And the settings that you have when running through the effects loop probably wont sound the same when running it through the front of the amp, well atleast for my amp it doesnt. At first it sounded like rubbish, now i can get some great tones out of it, so just play around with it for a while and it should workout just fine.
MichaelLozano12 1 year ago
@Jakeistoocool143 'cause you use it with the dirty channel. Try the send and return of your amp, you won't have any problem.
