  • thanks man!

  • Thanks for the cool video! Any suggestions for a larger camera? My camera weighs 4 pounds with the smallest lens attached.

  • @elijahdl There are professional rigs that cost thousands of dollars. Look for products by Dynamic Perception or Kessler crane. I don't have a great cheap solution for DSLRs.

  • @Getawaymoments Thank you! Much appreciated! A device in the thousands is most definitely out of my reach. Even the camera was a stretch. ;-)

(I have been clued in to a $250 device that can go up to 12 pounds, now I just have to decide if it's too complex to learn). Basically it's modified telescope controller... Youtube: Two Axis Panning Timelapse Head for DSLR (ready to buy)

  • @elijahdl Sorry for not mentioning that, yes there are many telescope hacks. youtube user milapse is a great source of information, he has posted tons of great videos, he is one of the people behind the Dynamic Perception rigs. Please subscribe to him and throw business his way. Good luck.

  • @Getawaymoments Ahh, no worries. Thanks for posting this video though! I have a camera that could benefit from use of an egg timer.

  • Wow!!!

  • where can i find the egg timer?

  • @ersalanni Walmart, Ikea .....actually any cheap kitchen "egg" timer will work. I have two updates to this original video check them out and see if that helps.

  • how do you set up your simple camera to time lapse?

  • @Demoman42 You need a camera with an internal inter-velometer , then I use a high rate like 1 or 2 frames per second.

  • @Getawaymoments I found that kind of function, it makes a photo every 2 sec. or so is it ok for time lapse? ;] But only one small problem i need to hold button all that time, if i release it's stop taking photos..

  • @Demoman42 That is not a time lapse function, that is a timer function for group shots. If you have to press the shutter button it will not make a good timelapse because you will be shaking the camera every time you press it.

  • @GetawaymomI mean when i press it and hold it it makes pictures until i release, i tried to secure button with some tape and it works fine ;]

  • I am just going to use some duct tape and my egg timer, but this is sweet too.

  • You are a genius.

  • So does the camera do a full 360 over 60 minutes?

  • @SeshMastaFlex Yes, actually it probably only makes it 350 .... at the end of the day it really is a cheap plastic kitchen timer ..... so results may vary.

  • It's spectacular!!!

  • @astrofranck Make sure you check out part 2 and 3 ..... new tweeks and models.

  • That is cool! What did you use to trigger the shutter for time-lapse photography? you can also use a mechanical intervalometer for all cameras like this one tempusALL. bymac.org

  • @bymacorg All of my cameras have intervalometers but that is a very cool idea

  • ATTENTION: to all those looking for this exact egg timer, search menards, theyve got one almost exactly the same, search "white mechanical timer" its like 6 bucks.

  • @BCdback24 thanks for this info, ive gone through 4 timers, every one of them the dial is not big enough

  • Where did you get the egg timer and for how much?

Thank you for the DIY Video?

  • Wow!!!!

  • I love this... have to build one.

I'm just starting to play with my new gopro camera and the time lapse looks like the most fun to learn....the panning device takes it up a notch.

    Thanks for posting it.

    Ron

    P.S.

the Egg Timer device part 2 is the way to go.. its great

  • @builtrodewreckedit Thanks, send me a note when you post your first panning timelapse.

  • Specifically, what type of egg timer is that? Does it have a brand name? and where did you purchase it? great video by the way! very clear and easy to follow.

  • Very Clever!

  • all i did was hot glue a cheap ball mount to an egg timer. done! no screwing or drilling required! and you can level it easily.

  • @colinstuber Yes that is true if you have that kind of egg timer available to you. When I was first building mine the only cheap timer I could find was the one above and it does not lend itself to your method because the timer is at an angle. My design works well for me, it can be mounted anywhere with the 1/4 20 turnaround and when properly mounted it does not move.

  • I finally found the time to search for a reverse / clockwise solution. You can't fix it to a tripod but it works fine for me. Here's how I did it:

i [dot] min [dot] us [slash] iepZza [dot] png (replace the characters)

  • Wow that is ingenious! I shall be trying this right away with my GoPro! Thank you!

  • It dosent matter how he said washers, people cant help how they talk, let it go, please........ I think its a great idea, by the way, I will have to try it!

  • What are worchers? I thought they were called washers.

  • @curtlow thanks for the comment.

  • @Getawaymoments So, a quarter intch nut [the hollow one] =is actually the universal size of a tripod screw size?

  • @eladbari 1/4 20 ..... yep .... there are other sizes but most consumer and small cameras here is USA are 1/4 20.

  • @Getawaymoments thanx for the reply :] sorry for the dumb question, but i got the 1\4 part. but what's the 20 all about? how does these sizes go about? [guess im asking since were using the metric system here..]

  • @eladbari the "20" is the thread size I believe.

  • @curtlow lol your busting balls

  • Is there a quick way hack to make is rotate the other way around? Just wondering if someone has an idea...

  • @Jixopp exactly, I tried a couple modifications with no luck ..... yet

  • @Jixopp Turn it upside down.

  • @TheMrGeekYou didn't thought that one trough?

That's the problem: turning it up side down doesn't make it turn the other way ;-)

  • @Jixopp It does though. If the base (which after flipping is on the top) is still the fixed part of the device the rotation will go the other way. Now you just need to turn the centre-pole of your tripod upside-down. Or if you need the complete 360 rotation (the tripod legs would get in the way of a complete turn) create a mount so you can attach it to a ceiling light or doorway.

  • @TheMrGeek OK. Yes that's a solution, but it brings some difficulties. You'll have to rotate the video afterwards (as the camera is up side down, or find something to flip the camera) and a ceiling mount is a good idea but not always an appropriate solution (point of view, outdoor, stability) Thanks for the input though.

Easiest and best would be an egg timer that turns the other way (I have clockwise and would like counter clockwise) but I guess they are all made the same way.

  • @Jixopp You could always try buying an egg-timer in australia.. I've heard that everything is upside down and back to front on the opposite end of the earth =P Or even better; make the camera the fixed point and rotate the whole room instead! Haha! =P I'll post here if I ever find an egg timer that rotates counter clockwise!

  • theres only 1 r in the word washer-------you said warsher

  • @sasktank Yes, you are correct. It is a clue to a local dialect that I'm stuck with, can you tell me what part of the country people say wash this way? clue ..... it aint Baaaaaston.

  • @Getawaymoments warshington

  • @cpelton85 Really? I have to take this from the great white north? Don't even get me started with how you folks twist the Queens english .... I hear the Canadian version down here in Tampa all the time ..... Let me hear you say " how about that, your out and about, eh"

..... by the way I like the Canadian accent and next time your in Washington D.C. don't laugh when you hear TV newspeople add the "R" to wash, Its our thing and I'm good with it.

  • @Getawaymoments hahah relax, you asked if we could spot what state you are from by the way you said "wash" sorry if I guessed wrong! Mr geek has you pegged. Guess I hit a sore spot... but since you're at it - nowhere but newfoundland do they say aboot, so keep hangin on to that one "ya'll" Maybe you should instruct them to hold their nose and pronounce it "abaaout" be sure to drawl the ou more than necessary.

  • @cpelton85 No sore spot just trying to be funny, I find accents interesting.

  • @sasktank dialect

  • Isnt that Siesta Key at the end? It looks like cresent beach and the that yellow condo is the Hyatt.

  • @conben2 Yes its Siesta key and crescent beach.

  • @Getawaymoments Cool . I knew I recognized it. I go on vacation there all the time.

  • Awesome idea!

  • OMG, I spent time making this, then went down the hardware store to purchase all the nuts and bolts and to my horror found that the thread I gave him is not standard in the UK. I've even tried online and cannot find any of these fasteners with a 1/4" thread, please help someone!

  • I just got a GoPro HD camera and I love the time lapse features. I went out and bought an old style egg timer thanks to your videos, but being in Japan, I cannot find 1/4" threaded hardware.. only metric :( LOVE your videos!

  • @KamojimaMeiko very cool, I used 1/4" because its the standard set screw for cameras in the USA, I don't know what the standard set screw in Japan is for cameras but just use the closest metric size screw in place of 1/4" .

Good luck putting yours together, send me a link when you post your first panning timelapse!

  • I bought the exact same one from Tesco, only in red. I found it more sturdy to have it mounted upside down, having the lip of the dial pushing against the tripod

  • thank you very much!

  • lol, gentley Bang it

  • @Angus1397 Yes, .......... gentley. :)=

  • One problem...it appears they're either sealing the screws or using a type of lock nut on new timers. I've been to three thrift stores in search of an oldie and have come away empty-handed. If anybody has a work-around, please chime in.

  • Very Cool.

I've been looking for something cheap and usable like this. Would really like something that could go for 3 to 4 hours and pan about 90 degrees. Maybe there is a way to slow the egg timer mechanism.

  • @brockstardeluxe I made my first one about two years ago for work and the important thing was for it to be cheap and not use batteries. Since I put my video up on youtube I have noticed several different versions pop up but one of my favorites was a guy on gopro free forums, he did the same idea on a water sprinkler timer and i think it goes for two hours. good luck finding a slower panning time. When you make yours send me link ........ thanks

  • @Getawaymoments Good thinking!

Now I need to find time to make it. Will keep you posted.

  • @brockstardeluxe Yeah thats what im looking for to. Reallly slow. Its hard.

  • @brockstardeluxe How about putting something like vegetable oil or treacle in the mechanism to slow it down?

  • @brockstardeluxe Use an analog clock for slower turns. The hour hand.

  • @Nassault630

    I thought about that actually.

Just need to find a clock hefty enough to carry a camera.

  • :)) that's hilarious... but, ingenious, nevertheless...

  • :)) that's hilarious... but, ingenious, nevertheless...

  • thanks for the great project idea.....I just linked your video to my blog.

    thefieldlab.blogspot.com

  • wow i would never of thought of that, this is really quite clever

  • Super idea, but what program do you use to make the time lapse video?

  • @Dscniki I use an old version of Avid express pro HD. It's no longer on the market.

You can do this with apple final cut or adobe premier. All you do is assemble thousands of Jpegs together to make a sequence.

  • @Getawaymoments thanks!

  • @Dscniki You can also use Picasa, works very easy and its free!

  • whoaaaa after finals week im so trying this out! i love doing time lapses

  • This is really cool, no seriously. Im very impressed :D!

  • thanks, send me the link to your videos when you build one!

  • I will sure do :) Thanks for the upload, brilliant idea. Just yesterday my eye caught the egg timer for just 2.55.. :)

  • Well done!

  • @ SpyerX: LOL

    Thank you, good stuff :D

  • Fantastical.

    This is like MacGyver IRL.
