i am sorry but people don't know they are fine, they might have been advised to put the horse down but not had the money to pay, this isn't as bad as horse slaughter in other countries, this is pretty humane, i disagree with animal cruelty but i am not sure this is, the only inhumane problem i saw was the injured horse but i think it was killed as quickly as possible, sad but not sure if it is cruel and also we should have double standards, cows shouldn't be killed inhumanely either!

This is horrible. Almost all of the horses in this video are perfectly fine. They can still be used for riding, yet they are dumped here by their owners. That is so fucking wrong. Killing horses because they are to lazy to find another place for them? These horses are dying for no reason, other then meat.

As much as I don't like the idea of Horse meat, they slaughterman wasn't ever cruel to the horse's, he showed them respect. I wouldn't ever eat horsemeat myself, but this isn't a cruel video. The men aren't being cruel. They are killed cleanly and quickly without feeling pain.

I've seen footage of Canada's and Mexico's slaughter houses where they are cruelly treated on the way in and then brutally slaughtered. There is no humane way to slaughter a horse just because of their design, they never were bred for meat and should never be.

The UK holds the highest welfare standards for animal welfare. I ride horses. The mare i share looks preg but she isn't. And i would never eat horse but aslong as there killed in the most humane way am fine with them slaughtering them. i dont like them traveling for two days in all weathers with no food / water and in cramped conditions though
I totally agree with joosiej85, the standards did seem rather high at this abattoir. At least their deaths were instantaneous, and if they were unwanted, then it was best that they were humanely killed than kept to suffer, by those who didn't want them. For all those who are so bothered about it, why don't they take in all these unwanted horses and give them a home. Truth is they can't, or don't want to, but they expect everyone else to do so.

I will never ever eat horse meat, and I also want to stop eating other kinds of meat. I just need to convince my mother -.- I know meats are full of proteins and are good food for humans and ofc sometimes animals have to be put down for some other reasons but I find this so sad... :(

I don't have eating disorders and plus I dont need too many proteins.I dont even do much sport I only sometimes go riding and so on. Plus I think proteins which are necessary for our organism can also be found in aliments such as eggs,cheese,legumes.. in addition,eating too much meat could also lead to obesity or heart attacks-we'd better start reducing the consumption of meat.. this high intake is unnecessary...I hope my mum will eventually let me be a vegeterian.

i think health and saftey would have someting to say about the way the rifle is being used,why not use a normal slaughter gun,but seems to be a normal slaughter house apart from this,horses dont seem to be suffering and slaughterman is doing a good job getting it over and done with asap,unwanted horses are a problme,what else do people want to happen to them....its just the way it is and it beter than in some other countrys.

So, if you think this footage is cruel, then please either google or search youtube for horse transportation, you will then see serious cruelty where horses are trapped in the back of lorries, one had it's foot caught between a bar and an iron sheet.....THEY CUT OFF THE FOOT and the horse was STILL ALIVE!
If you don't like this, and I don't, don't buy a horse, pony or anything you ride on, if you do, take care of it until it dies of old age. These guy's don't like killing the animals but they do it as humane as possible. I wouldn't like to take their job!

i got to the bit where the grey horse was in the cage and the gun was put to his head, i stopped after that i couldnt bear it anymore, on the way to my riding school there is a farm with a sign outside saying horses taken for immidiate slaughter, i hate going past that sign. i know this is better than them starving in a field to be dead in a few weeks anyway, but id prefer to have my horse put down by a vet with an injection

As much as it hurts to see a horse meet this kind of end, this is far more humane than what happens to horses in the US, Canada, & Mexico. Workers in this video treat the horses with respect & kill them with a single shot to the head, NOT forced down chutes, struck several times w/a captive bolt (or stabbed like they do in Mexico), nor are these animals starved/wounded. Personally, I feel that no horse should ever be subjected to this, but this method is better than the alternatives I've seen.

In countries like Italy and France it's a very popular meat, in any supermarket you will find as horsemeat right alongside other meats like chicken and lamb. Plenty of Asian, African and South American countries eat horsemeat as well. In 2005 more than 5 million horses were slaughtered for meat worldwide.
@joosiej85 With that black horse, looked like it was at least PART draft, wasn't kicking out of reflex after they started hoisting him, that was a conscious action. Believe me. Yes, I agree, this slaughter house's standards are somewhat better than others (at least they use a gun, not a stunning power tool to the head). But still, lots of these horses are illegally bought and many of the ways are neither humane, healthy, or fair. And I'm not a tree hugger. Shooting by gun is not human-safe. FYI.

This footage doesn't tell us anything about how and from where these horses were obtained so I don't see the point in speculating. And yes, occasionally the horse's death won't be instananeous, of course the shooting is not foolproof - but even normal drug-induced euthanasia, which is generally considered "humane" and "kind", can go wrong from time to time. Doesn't mean it isn't humane in 99.9% of cases.

And have you thought about all these horses that get put in slaughterhouses that have been dewormed by the common dewormer? You're NEVER supposed to use those horses for human consumption, even if the horse was last dewormed many years before, due to toxicity issues. Open horse slaugher like this is not good stewardship.
@HalcyonicEris Most countries that produce horsemeat do have restrictions on where the horses come from. In France and Italy for example horses that have been treated with certain medications are not allowed to enter the food chain. RE the drug euthanasia, I wasn't talking about doing it at slaughterhouses that wouldn't be practical - I was talking about euthanasia for pet horses, I was making the point that there is no way to GUARANTEE that an animal's death will be entirely painless.

The problem here is people see horses as 1500 lb dogs and not livestock. There is nothing wrong with this and this is one of the most humain slaughter houses that i have seen.

This slaughter house gives exellent meat and top horses after they are done their prime and breeding.
I think this is quite humane, the twitching afterwards isn't struggling, its just a response from having your brain knocked off line. As for the injured animal, 7 minutes is not a long time. You hardly expect somebody to shoot the animal outside in view of people. I can't see why selling their meat is a big issue, its been eaten many places since the start of time. And theres a lot of glue produced from their bones.
Unfortunately, people are solely concerned about the issue here because horses happen to be attractive, or appealing pets. There are unpalatable facts at play: Horses are expensive to keep, they are overbred, they carry a large amount of meat, and people will pay for that meat. In some cases, the alternative is a slow death through neglect, or far less controlled culling by an owner without the means to keep another horse. Life isn't all rosy, boys and girls. Sometimes, it sucks.

Vets recommend this secondary to lethal injuection for horses. Of course a meat animal cannot be injected, I'm speaking for horse owners who love their animals. The methods in the Canada & Mexico are absolutely deplorable. It is so sad that this is done, but if breeders keep up their over breeding practices, there is nothing to do but watch these sad videos.

This is the best way for most of these horses, that would of otherwise been sold to somebody who doesn't kow how to care for a horse for a low price, and would be neglected. Was good to see that he killed the unborn foal too; this guy actually seems to care.

To be fair, the guy doing the shooting is a good shot and keeps the horses quiet. Most horses going for slaughter would usually have some sort of lameness or other problem. Yes,,good ones do get through and its heart breaking. The instant leg twiching is all muscle spasams,,the bullet goes striaght into the brain so pain signals are blocked and they dont feel anything. The horse standing in the barn looked relaxed and not stressed either. I'm a life long horse lover and hate this kind of thing..

i am sorry but people don't know they are fine, they might have been advised to put the horse down but not had the money to pay, this isn't as bad as horse slaughter in other countries, this is pretty humane, i disagree with animal cruelty but i am not sure this is, the only inhumane problem i saw was the injured horse but i think it was killed as quickly as possible, sad but not sure if it is cruel and also we should have double standards, cows shouldn't be killed inhumanely either!

This is horrible. Almost all of the horses in this video are perfectly fine. They can still be used for riding, yet they are dumped here by their owners. That is so fucking wrong. @snubaby yes I totally agree with you. As much as I hate to see these beautiful animals slaughtered at all I have to say this is the most serene and accurate slaughter I've seen. I've seen footage of Canada's and Mexico's slaughter houses where they are cruelly treated on the way in and then brutally slaughtered. There is no humane way to slaughter a horse just because of their design, they never were bred for meat and should never be.

The UK holds the highest welfare standards for animal welfare. I ride horses. The mare i share looks preg but she isn't. And i would never eat horse but aslong as there killed in the most humane way am fine with them slaughtering them. i dont like them traveling for two days in all weathers with no food / water and in cramped conditions though

At least their deaths were instantaneous, and if they were unwanted, then it was best that they were humanely killed than kept to suffer, by those who didn't want them. Each horse was shot - instant death, out of sight of other horses, in a cleaned out area. No horse was baulking about going into the pen.
I would rather a horse was despatched this way than just neglected in a field.

Plus I think proteins which are necessary for our organism can also be found in aliments such as eggs,cheese,legumes.. in addition,eating too much meat could also lead to obesity or heart attacks-we'd better start reducing the consumption of meat.. this high intake is unnecessary...I hope my mum will eventually let me be a vegeterian.

i got to the bit where the grey horse was in the cage and the gun was put to his head, i stopped after that i couldnt bear it anymore, on the way to my riding school there is a farm with a sign outside saying horses taken for immidiate slaughter, i hate going past that sign. i know this is better than them starving in a field to be dead in a few weeks anyway, but id prefer to have my horse put down by a vet with an injection

As much as it hurts to see a horse meet this kind of end, this is far more humane than what happens to horses in the US, Canada, & Mexico. Workers in this video treat the horses with respect & kill them with a single shot to the head, NOT forced down chutes, struck several times w/a captive bolt (or stabbed like they do in Mexico), nor are these animals starved/wounded. Personally, I feel that no horse should ever be subjected to this, but this method is better than the alternatives I've seen.

Fact is that horses are slaughtered for meat all over the world - the standards in this particular abbatoir appear rather high. Far better for an unwanted horse to have a quick painless death like this, than to go abused or neglected and left to suffer.

@inwe1205 horses are completely not made for human consumption, they arent bred for it and they dont deserve it , horses used to be the main transportation for horses for people before cars, wars were won, and empires were built on the backs of horses..and now we repay them by slaughtering them for meat, and they didnt go there for overproduction, they went because horse meat is served as a delicacy in japan and eurpean countrys, people can stop eating horses, they just dont choose to.

@890Peace You clearly haven't read my comment... I am a VEGETARIAN, I ADORE horses (and now enough off them to know wars are won on their back, ...) and DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEM KILLED. And yes, they are being killed because there is a certain overproduction. If there would be just enough horses they wouldn't be slaughtering them because nobody would sell them. At least, that is how I think of it.And yes, I realise I do live in Belgium, one of the biggest markets for horse meat.

In countries like Italy and France it's a very popular meat, in any supermarket you will find as horsemeat right alongside other meats like chicken and lamb. Plenty of Asian, African and South American countries eat horsemeat as well. In 2005 more than 5 million horses were slaughtered for meat worldwide.

Yes, I agree, this slaughter house's standards are somewhat better than others (at least they use a gun, not a stunning power tool to the head). But still, lots of these horses are illegally bought and many of the ways are neither humane, healthy, or fair. And I'm not a tree hugger. Shooting by gun is not human-safe. FYI.

@HalcyonicEris Agreed but what I'm talking about is what we SEE in this particular video. This footage doesn't tell us anything about how and from where these horses were obtained so I don't see the point in speculating. And yes, occasionally the horse's death won't be instananeous, of course the shooting is not foolproof - but even normal drug-induced euthanasia, which is generally considered "humane" and "kind", can go wrong from time to time. Doesn't mean it isn't humane in 99.9% of cases.

And have you thought about all these horses that get put in slaughterhouses that have been dewormed by the common dewormer? You're NEVER supposed to use those horses for human consumption, even if the horse was last dewormed many years before, due to toxicity issues. Open horse slaugher like this is not good stewardship.

@HalcyonicEris Most countries that produce horsemeat do have restrictions on where the horses come from. In France and Italy for example horses that have been treated with certain medications are not allowed to enter the food chain. RE the drug euthanasia, I wasn't talking about doing it at slaughterhouses that wouldn't be practical - I was talking about euthanasia for pet horses, I was making the point that there is no way to GUARANTEE that an animal's death will be entirely painless.

I think this is quite humane, the twitching afterwards isn't struggling, its just a response from having your brain knocked off line. As for the injured animal, 7 minutes is not a long time. You hardly expect somebody to shoot the animal outside in view of people. I can't see why selling their meat is a big issue, its been eaten many places since the start of time. And theres a lot of glue produced from their bones.
It would be wasteful to just incinerate them.

Unfortunately, people are solely concerned about the issue here because horses happen to be attractive, or appealing pets. There are unpalatable facts at play: Horses are expensive to keep, they are overbred, they carry a large amount of meat, and people will pay for that meat. In some cases, the alternative is a slow death through neglect, or far less controlled culling by an owner without the means to keep another horse. Life isn't all rosy, boys and girls. Sometimes, it sucks.

Vets recommend this secondary to lethal injuection for horses. Of course a meat animal cannot be injected, I'm speaking for horse owners who love their animals. The methods in the Canada & Mexico are absolutely deplorable. It is so sad that this is done, but if breeders keep up their over breeding practices, there is nothing to do but watch these sad videos.

This is the best way for most of these horses, that would of otherwise been sold to somebody who doesn't kow how to care for a horse for a low price, and would be neglected. Was good to see that he killed the unborn foal too; this guy actually seems to care.

To be fair, the guy doing the shooting is a good shot and keeps the horses quiet. Most horses going for slaughter would usually have some sort of lameness or other problem. Yes,,good ones do get through and its heart breaking. The instant leg twiching is all muscle spasams,,the bullet goes striaght into the brain so pain signals are blocked and they dont feel anything. The horse standing in the barn looked relaxed and not stressed either. I'm a life long horse lover and hate this kind of thing..
