  • thx

  • So if they slowed down inside the star, how fast were they going before? Or did they speed up again after the star shrunk? What would have caused that?

  • very nice video:)

  • I love you...can we hang out????

  • informative as always. thank you, sir.

  • Hi Tony, your videos are great to watch.....Would you also make a video about the constellation Taurus - The Pleiades and Orion - Sirius? ;) Thanks

  • It still seems more likely they were extrasolar planets captured after the fact or bodies already present in that system knocked into a closer orbit by some collision. I can't fathom how the heat wouldn't literally melt the planets or the friction rip them apart. To my knowledge there is no element that can remain in a solid inside a star and therefore the planets couldn't either. Would be like dropping a ball of clay into a washing machine filled plasma.

  • Hey, look, I'd just like to thank you for finding the time to make these videos in between fighting the combine.

  • Can you please make a video about the galaxy IC 1101 ? :)

  • Oh poop!!!!

  • I'm a 14 year old freshman...I'm not good at science or this type of stuff, but after seeing a few of your videos I feel like you've made me smarter. I'm into this type of stuff now. KEEP MAKING MORE!

  • loving it :)

  • Idk why but you remind me of Ross from Friends

  • I'm loving the facial hair. :)

  • is that James T Kirk on the shelf next to ur right :)

  • dude you should spring for a better mic to eliminate that static

  • Good news Tdarnell!! you have officially reached YT Stardom! someone has "disliked" this video LOL. You know you're popular when you have a dislike even though the person who disliked it probably has no idea what you are talking about (c= LOVE THIS CHANNEL!

  • Why do you tards have to talk about religion here? This is a science channel. Talk science!

  • Dont do blopers -.

  • Heck, they've been detecting rogues between the stars, too :D

  • thats an amazing descovery

  • cool! Captain Kirk is sitting on his bookshelf ;D

  • in fact atheism is a religion of no gods so a person that is atheist is actually religious

  • @fernandommb : Nope. You are wrong on everything.

  • @fernandommb Theres nothing wrong with religion, just the people.

  • @Melee2Kil : Religion is useless superstition. People who believe in useless superstition are wrong.

  • @fernandommb No... that's wrong. Atheism is defined as the lack of any religious belief or belief in any Deities.

  • Hey Tony, do you teach? It seems like you are a good teacher 8)

  • @MsWhitekanna He is teaching on youtube, this is the future of the universe.

  • @MsWhitekanna

And I bet the students would love the "blooper sessions." :D

  • OH POOP?!

  • i have one question only:

wtf do you mean by "just like downtown?"

  • Happy NEWTONMAS everyone !! Today Dec.25-th the greatest genius was born 369 years ago. Also, Happy 369 A. N (Anno Newtonii) everyone !! May this new year bring happiness.

  • be nice at this time, because now we know where the hell is :D

  • i like when u call me a space fan. i feel like im back in school again. hah.

  • Oh so actually the world is gonna end at 5000002012 not 2012 .just a tiny error

  • Could these planets have been rogues that were captured after the star became a white dwarf?

  • @Nekobe24 I don't know. But it amazes me that we can reasonably discuss this these days. With real data, even. If you had asked me 7 years ago, I would have said that we would not reach this point in my lifetime. Imagine what we could have accomplished if we hadn't blown so much of the available funding on a useless taxi service to LEO, and instead spent it on doing real science.

  • Tony is such a cool laidback guy. He's like the perfect astronomer archtype you'd find in a movie. Like one of those guys who discovered a comet and named it after his naggy wife. <3 Tony!

  • ty ty

  • i watched them other day getting, stuff up a mountain in chile, million dollars of money bits and pieces and pieces machinery from all over globe get those things there, seen two guys in office after wards one looked like you tony as he was operating his computer, any idea what they looking for lol up there, merry xmas:)

  • Yawn....so what happened this week..well, not too much we only found two Earth sized planets around a red giant...oh that's great, so how are your shoelaces?

  • Excellent info & Love the outtakes, merry xmas and all that

  • Merry Christmas Tony! You bring the light of knowledge to all your space fans and we continue to keep "Looking Up" to you! Thanks a zillion!

Can't wait until we discover the abundance of life that we know is out there!

  • keep watching the skiis, uh skies

  • man it is not an easy job to keep up the space fan news

  • I do appreciate your videos. I just wish I had time to view them all.

    So many distractions...

  • Not even the specimen at 2:00 can distract me from the universe. The intelligently funny thing is, intelligent people know full well how unintelligent she really is. She is my universe and my upneinviesrse is in her. This is not a spelling error, just a holiday joke that spacefans can have fun figuring out. Have an awesome holiday watching tdarnell, Michio Kaku and Neil Tyson videos my fellow universe lovers, I know I will. :)

  • All this knowledge and science, and yet we still have creationists. Unbelievable, embarrassing, and horrible..

  • @bary1234 let people believe what they want to believe. Why are people so fixated on trying to change peoples views on life, i respect Richard Dawkins but i would respect him even more if he didnt spend half his time writing countless books on dissproving God.

  • @bradfordbulls4lyf Yeah, thats what I want. Exactly that.

All human are born Atheists. Religious bastards systematically indoctrinate defenceless children in to their sick barbaric cults. Brainwashing in to supersition is criminal child abuse. It causes permanent braindamage, that shit has to stop.

We need a law protecting children from superstitious liars. 18+ age restriction on religious indoctrination is what I want. Incidentally, that would kill all religions. About time.

  • @bary1234

    WELL SAID!!

  • @TheEruditepolymath Thanks, bro! Happy holidays :)

  • @bary1234 You sir, are a legend.

  • @Melee2Kil : That was like the nicest thing ever said to me on youtube :) Thank you, and Merry Christmas! :)

  • @bary1234

Atheist saying Merry Christmas ??? How about hypocrite ???

  • @BoooooooooooooHD : Dude, hope you are not wearing poly-cotton shirt so we dont have to stone you to death.

  • @bary1234 I'm an agnostic, but I think most atheists are douches.

  • @kladfaihfaklhioa : If you cant name a god that you believe in, you are an Atheist.

Agnostics dont say they believe in a god, they are Atheists.

What makes you say Atheists are douches? I mean surely most of them are, since that seems to be a big trend on our species, but still. Atheism is not a motivation for anything, or a world view or a political position, or anything, so it really cant make a person to BE anything.

  • @bary1234 hey Bary, great you can count to four, maybe you should go on a religious post instead of a science one and argue there, then you can all wish each other an "atheist merry christmas" there, whatever that is, meanwhile the rest of us are here to learn about science and not listen to your strong religious opinions and beliefs, rather than try and ram them down our throats here you should start a church and call it, "my way or the highway".maybe start your own post somewhere else PFO

  • @SuperShazbott Nothing to argue, we are all friends here. Religion is useless superstition and lies, that conversation is over. Nobody believes in zombie-jebus anymore.

  • @bary1234

    zombie-jebus LOL Brilliant stuff :)

  • @bary1234, oh, if only your words that "nobody believes in zombie-jebus anymore" were true. In the states we have far too many followers of this fictional Jewish carpenter.

  • @Turandot29 : Yeah, I know what you mean. Next election is going to be telling, we can see how much influence the New Atheist-movement has had.

Most of the so called "christians" in the states never think about religion. They just dont out themselves as non-religious because they might be astrocised by superstitious bastards.

  • @kladfaihfaklhioa Do you agree religion is silly?

  • @Melee2Kil Silly and dangerously stupid.

  • @nononsenseinrational Isn't that atheist?

  • @bary1234 technically a baby knows no better, i doubt when someones born they no about religion and have a conscience choice of what they believe so unless someone explains there atheist or theist no one has a right to tell say what they are. wouldnt putting a law on religion go against the American constitution, yano that one that says everyone has religious freedom (im not sure the precise wording). Now its Christmas day now and i believe you celebrate christmas (give gifts etc)

  • @bradfordbulls4lyf : If you have never heard about gods, you are an Atheist. If religious people stopped spreading their superstitious lies and evil cults, religions would disappear in one generation. And this world would be so much brighter and happier place for it.

  • @bary1234 if you are atheist why should you celebrate christmas since its a symbol of Jesus Christ being born, gifts are given as a symnbol of the 3 wise men etc. If your not going to believe or go to church, pray etc why should you part take in a RELIGIOUS celebration (forgive me if im wrong and you dont celebrate christmas) because since im not jewish i dont celebrate Hanukkah, since im not muslim i dont celebrate Eid, since im not Hindu i dont celebrate Duvali.

  • @bary1234 so can you please tell me why an atheist should celebrate christmas (i dont really care for a reply since ive wasted a good few minutes on this. Now weve got that out of the way, we can both live our lives as WE WANT to. goodbye :)

  • @bradfordbulls4lyf Atheists can celebrate christmas, just as easily as we can see Harry Potter in the movies. We know its not real, its just entertainment and imagination. Harmless fun.

You on the other hand really believe in the zombie-jebus, and heaven. So why do you wear seatbelt in a car? Why do you have a fire alarm in your home? Why dont you actively seek death and hurry to your eternal reward? Why dont you shoot your children before they can sin and risk going to hell?

  • @bary1234 Because deep inside their minds they know there is nothing after death and all they get is here.

  • @Neueregel : Well we know that off course. We are normal.

I trying to make this retard think for himself, not that he even dares to answer. Its always interesting to watch them squirm like worms on a hook trying to justify their sick cults.

  • @bary1234 the point is its a celebration of the birth of Jesus, dont go one for just less than a year claiming its all fake everyone who believes in it is stupid and then celebrate the second most important date in the christian calendar (easter being first). im going to be honest with you i didnt read past the first line because i cant be bothered.

  • @bradfordbulls4lyf : Did you shoot your children allready?

  • @bary1234

but atheism, the belief in no god/s, is a religion ....wtf...i was born an atheist...i never knew that..and my parents worked so hard on keeping me agnostic, damn you evil atheist bastards, damn you all to ....eh ....to........

  • @LemmingdeMerciless : Atheism is not a religion. Just like being dead is not a form of living.

  • @bary1234

its a belief isn't it ! so whats religion ? being dead probably is a form of life and living if you think hard enough about it ,

  • @LemmingdeMerciless Atheism is not a belief. If you have never heard about gods, you are an Atheist. All babies are born as Atheists. You dont have to have any knowledge or opinion about gods to be an Atheist.

Off course most Atheists DO have an opinion, since we know all religions are just lies, but thats not the defenition of the word.

And being dead is not living. Dead is not alive. No wonder you are in the zombie-cult if you think like that.

  • @bary1234

ok fella keep your hair on (if you have any left) but Atheism is a belief just as religions are all beliefs, get off the baby thing, and opposite comparisons they are getting you upset and i'm only taking the piss and if atheism is a zombie cult ya im afraid so :) Chill out fella we only have one life, why dont ya enjoy it and stop bringing up religion.... oops beliefs on a post about space .....end of...bye bye babe have a good 2012 yawn zzzzz

  • @LemmingdeMerciless : I have kids. I have to think beyond my own life.

  • @bary1234 Mate, come on. I came here to learn about science. I couldn't give a monkey's about your religious opinion

  • @rpx1979 : Why are you reading comments?

  • @bary1234 About one or two generations after that law, if it stands, would render religion extinct for sure.

  • @DeathsWill228 : Extinct enough atleast. We would have some 85 percent of humans on the side of sanity.

  • @bary1234 True.

  • @bary1234 Why are you talking about religion? This is a space video. No one cares about whether you believe in a god or not.

  • @aghoranathi : Why are you reading comments? And why are you writing comments about religion if you dont care?

  • @bary1234 1, because i can, 2/ i wasnt.

  • @bradfordbulls4lyf I wouldn't care if Christians believe their holy book, and just kept it to themselves, but they don't. They try to pass laws discriminating against people based on that book. Some laws even get passed, since they're in the majority. This religion business is nothing but dignified bigotry/hatred, and it needs to be stopped.

  • autofocus driving me nuts!

  • LOL you pretentious prick wearing a Fermilab jacket! Awesome video, as always, keep up the good work.

  • Very cool.....could it be that these planets were once much larger...and what we see are remnants?

  • Dear friend!

    Thank you!

Merry Chistmas and a Happy New Year!

    Tenderness!

    poupee3

  • oh poop.

  • Haha creationists .

  • The planet survived, but the ancient alien race that lived on it were incinerated.

  • Great job Tony can't wait for ur next vid

  • the sad thing is these things happened thousands of years ago and we can only see it now. i wish there was someway that we could observe real time data on these things.

  • Comment removed

  • @alphie20 I am sure there is a mistake in your calculations. The closes star is definitely NOT 2.5 million miles away. Firstly, the Sun is just 8 light minutes away, secondly the other closest star is about 4,2 light years away (Proxima Centauri), according to Wikipedia.

  • @DireStraitsInImpala Of course you're quite right. I deleted my comment moments after writing it, but you were faster on the draw than I. I was thinking of the stars outside our local group of galaxies. Thanks for catching it. Cheers.

  • @alphie20 No. According to wikipedia, the closest star, proxima centauri, is only 4.2 light years away. In fact, the entire galaxy has a diameter of only 100,000 light years.

  • @TheHdulcimerguy Yes, as I said to DireStraits below, I realized my error shortly after posting and deleted my comment, unfortunately it was not before it could be read by many - haha. I was thinking of stars outside of our galaxy for some reason. Brain freeze as they say. Thanks for pointing out my error.

  • @TheHdulcimerguy "Only" 4.2 l-yrs away? That's already over 40 quadrillion meters away..

  • @Neueregel I said "only" because I was replying to someone who said the nearest star was 1000 ly away.

    PS Merry Christmas!

  • @TheHdulcimerguy Actually there are thousands of stars inside a 1000 ly radius. Thanks, but I don't celebrate christmas. Happy Newtonmas!

  • @vibol03 Why is it a sad thing? It actually gives us more benefits, as we can look into the past of the space, which gives us a lot more information.

  • @vibol03 only way of doing that is to go very close to it

  • @vibol03 Real time = impossible due to the light speed C limit

  • @Neueregel yes i know. mathematically and strictly speaking, nothing is a real time data even observing a person next to you

  • @vibol03 yes, both light waves and sound waves (voices) have always a lag

  • I thought that red giants were red because their outer layers are cooler, not hotter.

  • Gay test - If you did not notice the hot girl on the add around 2 minute mark of the video, but instead read the title of the article...I have some bad news for you... Merry X-mas Tony and spacefans! :)

  • Always looking forward to these vids. Thanks.

  • thanks mate, Kepler is proving to be an investment well made love the bloopers btw

  • happy christmas and merry holidays to you tony

  • merry christmas tony!

  • hello space fans i just shoved a bottle of egg nog up my Uranus.

  • Thanks Tony. Merry Christmas.

  • So the star in question was not hot enough to melt the planets once they were inside the outer layer?

  • Our sun will become a red giant? I'm not looking forward to seeing that!

  • @abjectreality life on earth will have died out well before then our planet will be habitable for another 300 to 500 million years, unless we wipe it out before then which is looking extremely likely.

  • @abjectreality

I am, unfortunately i'll be deceased before the time comes :[

  • Merry Christmas Tony!

  • A:2

    M:10

is it me or audio is baddish ? :)

  • @lucabaracuda987 M? You mean V?

  • @zalmanusa yah had too much tequila and beer.

  • tidally locked planetary heat "torture" ... some design eh ...

  • PLEASE, enough with the ending bloopers. ;-)

Bloopers are not amusing - as appealing as "=3" may make them seem.

You are a brilliant man with a wonderful vlog I enjoy following on a regular basis.

Let's keep looking up, not down to the floor of the editing room.

    Thanks!

  • @chirdap More bloopers !! they are really funny

  • @chirdap I believe he keeps it dynamic this way!

  • Oh poop...

    Thumbs up if you agree!

  • Merry christmas :D

  • I wish you werent reading a prompt

  • Merry Christmas Tony & we appreciate the hard work that you put through :)

  • THank you very much for this information. I shall process it while i have breakfast.

  • Nice holiday eve special, lovely surprise! Have a great Christmas with your family, Tony.

  • I just imagine how much Carl Sagan would have enjoyed all these new discoveries; he was so eager to find planets like our and life outside it. For the summer holiday I bought Carl Sagan's Cosmos, told my partner and teenager son that Cosmos was a 'must-see'. Told my son: 'I won't be a good parent if I didn't show you Cosmos'. Enjoyed it so much again! Now we all agree that it hasn't been any other documentary like Cosmos ever since. Mr Sagan valued free thinking and freedom above all.

  • Merry Christmas Tony and all Space Fans :)

  • When a star goes red giant, does it loose mass? and if so, wouldn't it push the planets outward?

  • we need to find a planet for the "1%" now that they have enough money to go there.

  • "Intelligently Funny Tees"...I like a lot!!!

  • I got distracted at 2:00

  • Thank you Tony as always. And thank you for making the time for this, so-close-to-Christmas edition of SFN. I am sure you must be very busy getting ready to celebrate Christmas with your family, so very appreciated.

Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas and a fantastic 2012. Looking forward to more SFN and all the other work you kindly share with us. Merry Christmas from England!!!

  • Yay Tony Darnell on Christmas Eve.Merry Christmas Mister Darnell.

  • so they can still orbit INSIDE the star... wierd

  • So the years of these planets equates to mere hours of earth-time? They must be haulin' ass.

  • @delchavez But they're a lot closer so the distance they travel isn't as far

  • Thanks mate!

  • Thanks for sharing all those knowledge with us over internet it's mostly appreciated

  • Hearing about new planets is never dull.

  • I dont understand. Why wouldn't the planets just melt?

the explanation given for these planets seems to go against logic. there must be another way they have gotten so close to a "past its prime" star.

  • wow i still can't believe it...

  • 2:00 distracted me is that what French astronomers look like. I don't quite understand what the benefit of observing these planets would do, if observing the star itself gives us more information.

  • love the outtakes.

  • Wow, there is some weird captioning at the very end... not sure what that is all about.

  • Amazing

One question tony are you religious

  • @Gibranmacias911 i think that if he knows so much about universe he already figure out that there is not god

  • @club4ghz and what would it be his proof?

  • @taxtard3 No proof- just a lack of evidence.

  • @club4ghz

so please tell us how you conclude that.

  • @club4ghz we dont know if there is a god or not, but this place was built with intelligent purpose

  • So what you're saying is that these planets are hotter than East St. Louis in August.

  • So there's hope for human race? LOL just kidding!

  • learn something new about the universe everyday... a orbit INSIDE a star?! Jeez

  • Stars can be so sadistic.

  • Thank you :)

  • After watching many of your videos, I often wonder what you'd be like if and when you're drunk...LOL

  • Watching your vids tdarnell puts a smile on my face.
