@Luv2muchSrk Not really. Many girls, especially from families in Southern India train in a classical dance form (not necessarily Kathak) but they're no more common than professionally trained dancers anywhere else.
Maybe i'm wrong, but i think that Aishwarya appeared too clean as for courtesan. Sometimes it even seemed like she is a girl without any life experience. She is good actress, but i think it wasn't her role.
There are many version of Umrao Jaan, but I think the 1981 version with Rekha is considered the classic one. She did not dance in true kathak form, but uses her own style. It is one of the great Hindi films of all time.
yes agreed coz Madhuri is a trained classical dancer in Kathak. Ash on the other hand is also trained in Bharatnatyam. But Umrao Jaan dances are mostly mujras and Kathak is a must. So Madhuri would have been a good choice, but as you said Ash did a fine job
i know but thing i really like about this is ash and abishek bachan (sorry on spelling) in this movie together because their married. it's sweet seeing them work together. anyhoo i never knew ash learnt bharatanatyam.
hi aka4512, Ash took bharatnatyam lessons for 5 years in her young to teen days. She used to perform for her school and college most of the time. But she never took it to a professional level like giving stage performances outside, but on a personal note, i prefer Madhuri's dancing as she has excellent facial expressions.
True, Aishwarya did take Bharatnatyam lessons, but the style of dance in the film is Kathak which is vastly different. Madhuri, on the other hand, is well trained in Kathak (which is evident in Devdas) and would have been perfect for this film as well. Nevertheless, Aishwarya did a decent job in this film :)
i rember seeing this movie on here but i cant fin so can please tell me were can i buy it ... i cryed threw the hole thing and i would love to see it again and again .... not to cry but to see it cause i love it so much
i like aish but madhuri dances kathak much better than aish.

Though yes, it is sweet, they weren't married when this movie came out. At most they had just begun to go out, I think. o_O

@ringarose85 Although I'm a quite Ash fan, i must admit that Madhuri is the best classical dancer of Bollywood. She is just amazing. What a grace!!!

@Ireyth i know they have in devdas. i meant in this movie "Umrao Jaan" because madhuri have such expressions that will suit the character more.

Aish also has a background in classical dance. She also took lessons from Shobana.

All kathak dance with this lousy singing dadada is TRASH (saying it as a Jain Indian).

It is well done, but dancing is not merely that some movement is not right - staging hands. Good.
