This looks EXTREMELY good, but I'd like to know a bit more about the humans that can be interacted with. It'd be awesome to see them invent things, expand, build cities, make nations, wage wars and make peace, or even evolve!

I don't think it will go that far in this game. What we must do is ensure that the humans survive(or not), for that we must mold the land according to what we want to do.

I think they can build some stuff yea, as they said, humans can influence but not control. Also, notice those statues and buildings? They probably need plenty of flora for that and water to survive. I don't know if they will have animals, but I guess they also need to eat.
