I understand taking a little artistic license and maybe messing with the lighting a bit, but that yellow tree on the left with the green shadow contradicts the lighting of the mountains a bit. It just doesn't make sense to me. It frames the painting up a little but it just looks wrong. Setting up blocks to draw the viewer to the center is fine, but when you ignore the lighting of the background it just looks like a mistake. Also, the colors seem very carelessly mixed.
Though I love him paint immensly I have noticed that light came from the left on to the mountains, but from the right onto the the trees. How come??????
@fasor6 In a split second....a cloud rolled over and changed the reflection......wind gust from 15mph to 26mph changed the abstract look....sorry . Lol !
@crazykidscall911 Clean your brush often and use multiple brushes. Also, the more you mix paint the more muddy it will become. Learning color theory is also very important.
Oh lord, until watching this video I used to think that the painters painted every single detail at a time and I was thinking like "Oh my god, how do they get all those details in with that huge brush?"
Now I've realized they just swipe the area and it looks like a mountain etc., genius :o
The technique is to get more people interested in painting but at the end of the day it is a limited and very basic system, lets just hope some people eventually learned how to paint with the full spectrum of techniques. Oil paint is the most beautiful of mediums and it is easily capable of acheiving mind blowing effects, i know because standing in front of a masterpiece once i was totally gobsmacked because in the hands of a genius it takes on a look of magic.
I think its a very good sample of old school paints, very classic and outum colorfull paint, Mr. William does a very nice work.
muy bonito y bien hecho, su forma de pintar es clasica pero no pasa de moda, bonitos colores y su técnica es fácil siempre que se sigan bien los pasos. Gracias señor William.
As a spectator you can appreciate or you can judge. here and there you may need judgement to appreciate, but mostly it's observation to appreciate. An artists paints. Thanks Bill Alexander. Nice work. Thanks for the upload.
@ecisme10 I've actually done a lot of landscape studies and the background and forground is a perfect connection. I guess everyone has their own opinions though.
Negativity no matter where you go. Regardless of someone's contributions,in this case with William Alexander and Bob Ross teaching thier techniques, people will put a negative spin on it. These are people that I believe would condemn some how someway the scientist who develops a cure for cancer...get a life and when and if you do...enjoy it...pffft
WAOU !!!! c'est un SUPERBE tableau avec des couleurs magnifiques !!!!! merci merci beaucoup ! je debute en peinture et j'apprends beaucoup grace a vous !
i just think that sometimes light bounces off things, especially when there is water around, but hey, im a novice....and as you say, he doesent care. (not now anyway)
The only reason anybody would call this formula painting is because Bill and Bob are the most famous for actually showing their techniques. If you saw Piccaso painting on a weekly show, I am sure we would see his Formula techniques as well.
my advice is to focus on the finished product. Bill and Bob are genuises just like any other famous painter. And yes, they do create "painters" when students are taught their methods. It is the students job to develop into their own originality.
I just had a huge argument with a...well I'll just say he's a painter who was jumping up and down about Bill and Bob producing "clones" rather than painters. All I can say is that he obviously never watched -- or at least comprehended -- their shows. Both made it clear that they were teaching a technique, not producing copywork. It drives me nuts that this distortion continues and that people keep spewing it out like that.
.to your friend i would argue, your "clone" statement is very naive (or have i missed the news that he alone has broken new ground with painting)...1. i would dare say that the doors for true originality when it comes to painting have been closed for some time, its all been done and we all steal from the past, your friend included...you just do your best to put your own spin on it...2. and so while some are more artsy than others, make no mistake that we are all clones in one way or another
Thanks for the insight. Have to mention that this was and is no friend of mine -- just a bully on an artists' social network site -- but your insight will help me if he ever attacks again (right now he's avoiding me). Certainly his own work is pretty, but anything but ground-breaking. I think his main problem was that Bob Ross in particular made a lot of money, lol. This seemed to be the main point that came out. Thanks again; now I feel better armed to handle people like this.
Gosh. I'd hate for anyone to make a lot of money with art. I guess it's better for artists to survive on gutter water and ramen noodles instead of making a decent living with their art.
I have had the same problems with many other artists and art teachers. I even had on instance where my high school art teacher sat down, I walked her through a painting and she could not "Wet-into Wet", in all my experience of teaching, my art teacher could not grasp this style! If painting in this way makes you happy, do not stop. It is not a copy-cat style of art in any manner!
@alix0657 omg! my art teacher hates bob ross and i love bringing these guys up. she thinks they are cookie cutter techniques but these 2 guys inspired me to start painting. and landscapes are my favorite
@xXINeedNoNameXx lol ask your teacher about claude monet , yep , same wet on wet approach just used smaller brushes and he never marketed his technique .
@alix0657 All they (Bob and Bill) did was create a comprehensive way for anyone to paint, which I'm all for. However, it takes an artist to use those techniques to express themselves originally, but that's the painter's responsibilities, not the instructors'.
@alix0657 That's what irks me since I took up oil painting this past spring. Granted, I have followed Bob Ross' paintings in the paintings in the paintings that I've done so far, but that's because I'm learning. And in each painting, I go by notes that I have and don't look at an actual painting as I go. I do have original ideas planned that I'll be trying before long.
Every art approach has a "formula", whether it's a traditional Old Master's style or impressionism, or anything else. " Block in the underpainting, add glazes for color, scumble the highlights, etc. " All of that is put in place to achieve the final result. If using a wet, white basecoat is used for the same purpose, does it make it any less "art" ? Many people who are unfamiliar with that approach are envious of it's simplicity. It's because they don't understand it.
That "Almighty" brush and knife is what got me hooked. I've heard some people say that this technique is a "gimmick", but I think it was ingenious in that a person could achieve great results in a fast manner. Art doesn't have to be laborious and intimidating to be good! Bill is proof of that.
I've had arguments with people that say Bill's method is "formula painting".
Bill had a successful life and oil painting made that possible. I imagine some people that complain about wet on wet probly never sell their paintings or are able to dedicate so much of their life to what the love.
@wilsonbickford , its kind of a gimmick...why? because I can see that Bill has a great sense of color contrast, harmony etc...something most people don't have and thing all they need to do is grab a big brush and painting knife. What Bill does not talk about here is that he knows what he is doing. Now you grab a person that does not know about simultaneous contrast, color harmony and although he uses the bill tecnique will produce a crap painting. Painting is a skill..and bill lies about that.
I agree, painting is not a "talent" you're born with. It's a "skill" which you have to learn. And seeing these techniques will give an aspiring painter a starting point, but they will only learn and improve their abilities through lots of practice. As with anything in life, if you want it badly enough, you'll pursue it. I believe ANYONE can learn to paint if they desire it, just as anyone can learn to drive a car or run a computer. It's a learned skill.
@wilsonbickford , yes I agree. All talent = Data, Information, Knowledge and understanding.
What Bill is doing here is just applying paint..if someone does not have knowledge of light, contrast and color harmony then they r in big trouble...even if they try to follow this video step by step...its not going to have the professional look of bills paintings.
There's no gimmick here. It's just some easy painting techniques. You're reading into things far too much. What's so hard to believe in all of this?? You pick up the brush, you use some common sense, and you paint. That's all.
@PandawdyBob , I don't think these guys really cared about teaching people to paint. They never did any videos about color theory, color mixing ect. Don't forget they sold their own products. They wanted people to think anybody can be an artist and paint wonderful pictures. Im not saying this is bad...But it was just a business for them. They were careful not to make painting appear difficult. Its not a bad thing..and im happy people starting painting thanks to these guys.
It could be that Bill took a chance, applied himself fully and devoted himself to what he loved and success followed.
I know that Bill sold his own products. If you get a chance to pick some up, I recommend them. But please remember that what we see in this show is not the only thing that Bill did. He didn't just stand in front of a TV camera. It's probly unknown how many actual classes Bill taught.
@sfumato1002 ...do you realize that both bill alexander and bob ross have a 3 hour dvd each that teaches not only these techniques in great detail, but they also explain the importance of light, how to achieve certain colors with color mixing, show and explain in many examples the power of contrast...so again i would say to you, do the research before you makes such foolish accusations...or did you expect them to cover everything there is to know about painting in one or two 30 min videos
@wilsonbickford , If you watch bill in this video...every stroke he creates is done by knowledge about color contrast and harmony. Keep people thinking art is simple...when in reality these guys had years and years of color education which they were not sharing the knowledge with fans.
it would be impossible after watching these guys long enough not to learn about light, contrast, or color harmony..i mean they talk about these things constantly..and they always mention that it takes practice to achieve the results that they have..they are just of the opinion that this particular method is easy and anybody can get started..so when you say these things, to me it is clear that you have not really been paying to much attention when watching, or you havent really watched enough
