Wait WUT!!?? Lemmie get this right.... The City wants to STOP Churches from Feeding the poor and hungry b
ecause they are located in residential areas and there some sort of law which prevents dining halls to be in residential areas. And feeding the poor counts as a dining hall...
Question! : What's the difference between a "dining hall" and a random gathering of people eating? By this logic, wouldn't they be able to ban BBQ's in the neighborhoods too?
Believe it or not people selling caffeinated booze actually is a bad idea. It's main targets are binge drinkers who already drink to the point of passing out, and are now loading themselves up with caffeine so they can't pass out.
What they should be doing, but MADD are too afraid to ever allow, is putting vitamins in our beer.
Here in SoCal there is a major infestation of the "filthy people". These aids, hepatitis C, and alcohol infected people are a scorge. I use wasp and hornet spray to dispel them from my dumpster where the divers dive for food and redeemable aluminum cans and bottles. Sometimes, when I run out of wasp and hornet spray I use my air horn to shoo them away. Ambulances come every day to rush one overdosed bum to the hospital. They urinate everywhere. They are vermin. Tax paying neighbors deserve too.
This is a shame, not many churches these days actualy help the poor or people who are down and out due to the economy, the fact that this church is trying to do good in the community should take priority. If someone has complained why and where is the complaint, and does the complaint of the few do justice. This appears to be just another form of rationing put fort in the stimulus package, If you treat people like animals they will act like animals, they was no justice done here!
In the article I read, the city council was trying to find a place in a non-residential area to continue feeding these people. The problem that many people had was the crime, drug use, and trash that these homeless people were leaving behind while gathering before and after the breakfast.
Why should the council find a new place to feed these people? They weren't feeding them in the first place. This was just an attempt to not seem compassionate. If trash was a problem, I find it hard to believe this conscientious congregation, whom are caring enough to feed the hungry, would be so careless about trash. I also think that crime and drug problems are a wonderful reason as to why bring these people into a more positive environment as a church. Stop making apologies for the state.
Of course they cleaned up the grounds on Church property, but if you read the actual story, you would know that these homeless people were causing a public nuisance outside of church grounds. With the high percentage of mentally ill and drug / alcohol dependent homeless, why is it so hard to believe that they make horrible neighbors?!?
Do you really believe that homeless people don't bring crime with them?
Do you really think that it is too much of an inconvience to the church to feed them downtown where these people are being bussed from? I think it would be easier to move enough pancakes to feed 150 people then to move 150 people.
Your compassion for the needy, private charity and private property are so heart warming. Thank god for the state so you can make neighbors do whatever you want.
You poor thing, you're a fascist and a grinch. You could use a hug.
DiCiccio said he and his staff are looking at different locations where the church could serve meals to the homeless.
"The best solution is when the church gets to feed the homeless and the neighbors get to live in peace," DiCiccio said.
This councilman is not a bad person, there were over 100 signatures of residents saying they did not want homeless people being bussed into their neighborhood. This video is VERY MISLEADING!
When their "congregation" starts littering, using drugs, leaving beer bottles, pan handeling, and vandalising on people's private property, then the church needs to take responsibility and move it's pancake breakfast.
If some one vandalizes or litters on some one else's private property that INDIVIDUAL should be held accountable. If a dumbass friend of mine comes over to my home, then does something stupid after leaving I am -not- to be held accountable.
If you keep inviting them over despite them terrorizing the neighborhood after they have vandalized and littered all over your neighbor's private property, i would hold you accountable. Especially, if I pointed out to you that YOUR dumbass friend had been vandalizing my property and asked you to not invite them back over.
If the police do their jobs is dumb ass friend will not continue to commit vandalism because He will be in jail. the truth is he would not be accountable even if he continued to invite the friend over because what his friend does off of his property is beyond his control and therefore not his responsibilty.
It not the states business who any one feeds on their own private property. the fact is the state should not be involved and this move is just disgusting.
You and your ignorant comments. Middle and Rich class people litter, take drugs and pan handle. Half the time you could not tell a homeless person from one that has a residence.
Nanny state don't like no churches muscling in on their "helps dah po" gig. Churches have been feeding people for thousands of years, but all it takes is one Marxist city council to put the tradition down.
People complained about the litter, drug use, vandalism associated with serving homeless people in a residential area. They didn't want that in their part of town. The councilman behaved exactly how his community wanted.
Word I get is that he favors developers over residents, which is how he outspent his opponent in the last election. That's what was being reported locally back in the summer, anyway.
Actually this city councilman is exactly the kind of councilman i would want in my community. He was RESPONSIVE to the will of his constituents. The community did not want the homeless in their neighborhood.
Mary Poppins would kick their stupid asses all up and down the street then leave them quivering with her talking umbrella shoved up their rectum. Painful, but hilarious justice.
Sheesh, even when a church does something great (like feeding the hungry), assholes in government step in and fuck it up. Thanks government douchebags. Am I going to be taxed for walking around naked in my own house? The Nudey Tax you say? D:
I'm sure thats on the cards. And you'll be docked carbon credits if you fart in bed, also.
I can think up a few they could pass tomorrow with no opposition: hot shower tax, green lawn tax, two fridge tax, day-time air conditioning tax, pool tax, mail delivery tax, pet tax, toilet flush tax, ice cream tax...
Excuse me bud, but the order was placed against the church by a democratic socialist. I thought that you are one of them. You my friend are a DUMB ASS! lol
I kinda felt this story just told one side. The property owners in the area complained about the homeless people in their area because some of them were defacating in the yards surrounding the church. Should the property rights of the homeowner's in the area be violated because a church wants to feed the homeless in a residential area? Why couldn't they take the food to where the homeless live?
There are still places that they regularly sleep at. Many sleep under bridges or at some of the homeless shelters. I'm sure you can think of the part of town where homeless people live in your area. I'm also pretty sure you avoid it.
I do volunteer work, but I wouldn't want homeless people in my yard. I take great exception to bringing homeless people, many of whom have mental problems, histories of violence and sexual abuse, into a residential neighborhood where children are precent. I live in the suberbs so that my children will be safe, having homeless people wandering around my neighborhood would make them less safe.
There are a lot of homeless people who "reside" in the area that that church is located. Just because the church is zoned in a residential area, doesn't mean that it is in the fucking suburbs.
@salmongutter, Why do you think St Vinnies and the rest of the charity food services locate in the inner city of Phoenix? Hint: Because THAT is where the poor and homeless live. They are traveling in conveys and being bussed in. The residents of the area complained about the increased risk to themselves.
I have never been to phoenix, I was basing my opinion off of the news cast. If the residents of that area say they did not have a problem before the pancake breakfast with homeless people, i'm going to believe them.
@TheATrain33 Funny because if people here who are critical of the neighborhood actually DID any extensive volunteering with the homeless you'd know that one of the most serious rules about volunteering is maintaining safe boundaries. Welcoming them to your neighborhood with open arms does not constitute a very safe boundary.
Wow, my hometown was featured on... Wait... That's a bad thing... :(
Seriously, though, most of the people in Phoenix are on the church's side in this matter. Hopefully, they'll amend the charter to allow the church to continue feeding the homeless.
So now private citizens can't take their own money and help feed the homeless. Who's gonna feed them? Oh, wait. How 'bout we start a gov't program to take care of that?
Bleeding hearts make a lot of noise about helping those less fortunate, but when it comes down to it, and its in your back yard, all of a sudden the gvmt needs to do something about it.
I say, if you want to help somebody, Then help somebody where you ARE!
But, its so much easier to jut pay a higher tax and let the gvmt take care of it, however inefficient that choice might be. Out of sight, out of mind. At least then you don't have to worry about it, because YOU paid your taxes.
We wouldn't want churches and charities treating problems that only an all powerful government should be working on! Shame on them for feeding wards of the state.
First the government needs to create a problem, or at least make it so bad its untreatable. Then they can extort massive taxes to treat said problem. Its a great liberty killing racket that keeps armies of politicians employed doing work that other people would do for free. It works for drugs, the economy, health care, and the poor!
well then instead of blaming the rules, they should have taken those responsible and made them take responsibility. The justice system, I am certain, extends over all civilians, even the poor ones. We didn't need new rules, we just needed to enforce old ones.
I see your point, but lets look at this. The "soup kitchen" is in a residential area. So, the homeless are starting to move closer to it; into the residential area.
They have to take a dump somewhere, so complaints are made...to the gvmt. "Fix it", they cry.
While the church feeds the homeless.
What if they donate to the church for porta-potties, or for a new addition with showers. Donate for a program to help the homeless get back on their feet. Become a community of action...withOUT the gvmt.
There were also drug needles in between the alleys. There is also a high probabality that some of these homeless were sex offenders, mentaly disturbed, or violent felons. The point is, I wouldn't want them in my backyard due to the safety risk it would pose on my family.
@bookhound63 Their are already areas in the inner city of Phoenix that have homeless shelters. They are all downtown. Its much more of a safety issue. I'm not proposing putting them anywhere. If anyone is relocating them, it is the minister of their church. This 1:18 snippet does not do the residents of Phoenix justice, it does not explain their side of it.
For all those nutjobs who say Jesus was a socialist. Do you see what I've been trying to say? Socialism tries to take the place of God, not do God's will. Sociialism requires that ppl put their trust in government, not God.
Well, God, through these ppl and their church was FEEDING poor ppl. We are God's hands. People who serve God want to help those less fortunate, but the government has begun to say, "No, you can't do that. The only thing that can help the poor is government."
Hah, "nutjob"? Sounds like denial to me. The thing with socialism is that its not so left and right as you think. Both christians and non- christians act in a "socialist" way. Are they economically and socially restrictive? Yes. So whats so nutty about that statement?
mammuru, try to understand the difference between charity and government control.
The more we allow the government to "help ppl for us" the more selfish we become. Humans are simple creatures really, we need constant reminders of our humanity and of how important it is to love and to give. We need to experience it first hand.
Paying a big tax and then seeing it squandered instead of used efficiently to actually help the poor is VERY frustrating. WE can do a better job than the government.
I never agreed with government control or forceful behavior (didn't Jesus destroy the trade between people in a temple?) where are you drawing your assumptions from? I don't think humans need a reminder, we are loving and giving. But religion and other collectivist roots will tell you that you need guidance, to be nannied.
Private charities will always outperform government bureaus, and not to mention the latter is immoral.
1) Jesus drove the "money changers" from the temple because they were cheating the ppl. The money changers would be an example of the govt. they were endorsed by the temple (the govt.) to be there.
2) How about,"We need to interact with ppl to stay grounded". Is that better? I don't mean we need things shoved in our faces, but every once in a while we all need to be reminded of things we sometimes forget, like how it feels to be alone, or unloved, or outcast.
I think we should all go down to city hall and apply for a permit to wipe our ass.

I think the point, that both sides are missing on the homeless issue, is the fact, that you don't solve one problem, by creating another.
In this case, the Problem: homeless are leaving refuse on the lawns of home owners. on their way to a church trying to do something of good will.
The solution Taken: Ban the church from doing something good
The solution that SHOULD have been taken. Church informs them to not leave trash, and police make sure things stay in check.

There were also drug needles in between the alleys. There is also a high probabality that some of these homeless were sex offenders, mentaly disturbed, or violent felons. The point is, I wouldn't want them in my backyard due to the safety risk it would pose on my family.

Ok then, where do you propose that we PUT them? They are HOMELESS! They will be in SOMEONE"S neighborhood.

Jesus would be so proud.
For all those nutjobs who say Jesus was a socialist. Do you see what I've been trying to say? Socialism tries to take the place of God, not do God's will. Sociialism requires that ppl put their trust in government, not God.

@bookhound63 Trust in god to do what for us exactly?

Well, God, through these ppl and their church was FEEDING poor ppl. We are God's hands. People who serve God want to help those less fortunate, but the government has begun to say, "No, you can't do that. The only thing that can help the poor is government."
Trusting in God, also means trusting in his ppl.

Really they cheated the people. I didn't see no trial. Sounds like he justified his actions just like a government.
Sides, human beings are very self conscious. We are all craving attention, feel unloved, and are alone.

Voluntarism is not socialism. Force and coercion is socialism.

Of course they want to stop churches from feeding the hungry. That's the government's job.
Every time they can stop good hearted people from giving freely, they can declare that its a need not being met, and make it a government program.
