Was this recent CME larger and more dangerous than the X-class back in February? What's the difference from a X class and a large CME? Thanks beforehand.

@4842Chuck flares are a flash of electromagnetic radiation caused by an explosion on the sun. Coronal mass ejections usually follow a flare or resulting eruption, CME's are clouds of magnetized gas hurled into space also by an explosion on the sun.

WEAK IMPACT: A sharp gust of solar wind hit Earth's magnetic field today, June 17th, at approximately 0230 UT. This probably signaled the arrival of a CME en route from the sun since June 14th. The impact did not spark a significant geomagnetic storm, so bright auroras tonight remain unlikely.

How would a large solar flare affect earth, and how do we prepare for it?

Also, you mentioned the "coronal hole" will be earth facing, possibly causing earthquakes... do you have any idea where/when and what mag? ...(I'm living in Christchurch an a bit scared to head back into town anytime soon :/ )

@VixelPix the exprected seismic activity that is coming wont be in the new zealand region, the coronal hole is much higher in latitude and closer to the equator region

Yahoo news yesterday, our mainstream science issued news that they are encountering what might be a solar hybernation, sun CME activities is slowing down, hmmmm.. last week was just a big CME. Do you have any comment on this news yesterday ?

@09205479428 we have been in a prolonged solar minimum for a few years, this has moved the solar maximum forecast to be moved from 2012 to mid 2013. Its sun spot number that determines the forecast not CME's.

( at least an app. / comparison ) so that ordinary citizen like me would be able to visualize it, and so are we having declined solar spots compared maybe to the last solar max cycle for mainstream science to proclaim it going in to what might be a "hybernation" ?
