  • p.s. Anybody think about the fact that white people in America aren't allowed to learn languages, on the whole? In other countries, there are a plethora of options; but if an American devotes himself to learning a language other than English, that's weird. You need to justify that. Bush gave a speech in Spanish and everybody laughed at him, because he sure don't look hispanic.

    This country is so racist.

  • LOL, everyone laughed at Bush because he has no accent.

    2) My point is that "aren't or aren't linked to" is, in this case, a prerequisite devoid of worthwhile meaning.

  • After reading through this debate, I think you lost all credibility when you explained your own wannabe interest in Japan. So basically, this whole time, you've just been trying to get koichi to join the weeaboo club along with you. And yes, being surrounded by Japanese culture your entire life DOESN'T make your interest in Japan the same as any random white dude's.

  • Euraethes, yeah, I was super surprised not to have "my own wannabe interest" attacked even once. Of course I realize that "being surrounded by Japanese culture your entire life"--a claim that's a little specious in this case--makes it more "okay", in the eyes of a lot of people, to be into Japan. And fuck, now I'm out of energy to discuss anything with you. So I'll just tell you to choke on a cock. Although I don't really care what you think either way.

  • haha, sorry-- a lot of AMERICANS. okay in the eyes of a lot of Americans.

Japanese people tend to be cool with it either way.

  • Nice video! You are hysterical and awesome!!!

  • did anyone else notice that while he was talking things in his background keep changing? 1st it was a plant then kendo suit and godzilla mask lmao

  • What do you know about my relationship with Ireland?

  • what do you know about my relationship with Japan?

  • STOP IT. BOTH OF YOU. STOP. I'm getting angry >:{

  • That you were surrounded by Japanese people as a young person and are studying Japanese.

I was surrounded by Irish people as a young person and do not speak Gaelic.

I think these are very analogous.

I know it sounds like I'm attacking you, but I'm not. Initially I was, but that's gone now. At any rate, I'm willing to step down in the interest of cooling heads. Sorry if I offended you.

  • well, then i would consider you part irish, then, much more than i am, despite the fact I'm also 1/4 irish. Time for me to step down too then.

  • Lisa Nova is a spamming BAKA NO BAR CHAN! >_<

  • I don't really expect to "win" anything, because a) I'm a bunch of text, b) I seem like I'm trying to bring Koichi down or something, and c) I really like Koichi too. But the fundamental problem here is highlighted in your own post: what does wannabe mean? Secondly, I don't want it to seem like I called anyone racist. I called the thinking racist, but racist thinking is very common.

  • I LOOOOOVE Hana Yori Dango!! So glad there was a second series.....it so was gonna happen!

  • Can't wait to see your haircut.

  • lol. is he even japanese? o_O.

  • haha, this guy is awesome. It's not as though what he's saying is false is it? It's very, very true.

  • Oh man, I was dying at the Nova Usagi comparison. That thing is way creepier than LisaNova... or at least slightly creepier.

  • visiyesthatoneさん: 私の意見はちゃんと分かりましたか。一回読み直してください。

  • OK, I read the more recent comments and you're trying to make a point. I think your point is not that great, however and probably shouldn't be taking this much time and energy to argue. You find the definition of being Japanese very narrow. In some aspects this is true.

Koichi is both Japanese and not. He never dissed anyone of non-Japanese blood for liking Japan. He's dissed people for being arrogant and ignorant of what they claim to love.

  • He has every right to object to a term such as weaboo not only for its entirely stupid sound and pejorative connotations, but also because it has the aspect of being something he's not. If someone called you the n word or some other racial slur, you'd object not only on principle but also because of the inaccuracy.

  • He did not simply "object". He used his heritage as justification. If he were earnestly "trying to be Japanese," it would be no different than a full-blood white person "trying to be Japanese," because he too is a 外人。

If someone seriously called me the n-word, I would laugh hysterically.

  • that was my point about the n word. Which is why I think all three of us have spent too much time on this discussion.

  • visiyesthatone, I think it is an interesting and important discussion.

  • Your interest in belittling my argument is noted.

What he did was claim not be "weaboo" because "he is part Japanese". This implies that his Japanese heritage justifies his interest in Japan. My points are: 1) His Japanese heritage does not make it more "okay" or more "natural" for him to like Japan; and 2) He does not need to explain his interest.

  • So, here is my summary of the argument(paraphrased):

OP: You are 'a wanna-be Japanese person'.

Koichi: What, but I am Japanese (heritage-d)?

You: Your Japanese heritage doesn't make it more ok for you to like Japan!

Koichi: But... it does make me "Japanese".

You: You don't have to explain your interest!

Koichi: I never actually defended my interest, if you look. I mean, we could quibble about it... I just care about my heritage.

    You: *talks in circles*

Koichi: Uh, ok *talks in circles too*

  • Ha ha. You rock. And umeboshi is delicious.

  • Indeed it is. Thank you :D

  • In other words, he is defending his HERITAGE, not his INTEREST. Sure, you could twist maybe ONE of his comments around to make it seem that he was doing what you said he was, but honestly he was just responding to your tenacious accusations that he was being racist and "explaining himself" (which doesn't seem that big a crime to me, but I don't want to get into that with you).

  • moshimoshi: His interest was attacked. And he said: "How can I be a wannabe when I'm the real deal?" This means he is immune to attacks that he is a "wannabe", arguably a racist term in this context, because he has Japanese heritage. This means it's "okay", because he is just connecting with his heritage. And this method of justification is both empty and unnecessary.

  • I refuse to talk in circles with you, but let me make one thing clear. He is not "connecting with his heritage". He is merely defining it. You are basing your argument around the assumption that he was responding to YOUR definition of weaboo, when I know for a fact, that he considers the term as I defined it. You are talking about apples and oranges. I think I laid it out for you pretty clearly. And, I will say it one more time: HERATIGE not INTEREST.

  • I am a quarter Irish, but I do not have a burning interest in Ireland.

I could choose to have one.

Were I called a wannabe after learning Gaelic and taking Irish dance classes, I would be tempted to point to "my heritage". However, I still chose Ireland. My reasons for choosing it would not be so wildly different from those of anyone else who was not simply raised in Ireland.

  • You aren't listening to what I'm saying. I'm being quite calm about this, but read my last comment from about 17 minutes ago. REFER your comments to my summary, not me and PLEASE do not post on this thread again, because it's not fair to Koichi's video. I will give you my msn, if you want even.

  • once again, you forget to bring up the fact that I didn't choose it. I was raised single-handedly by a Japanese woman. I was surrounded by Japanese grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins, many of which were first generation. Stop ignoring my good points to making things up. It is not just some "interest" it was what I grew up with. Whether you think this is watered down or not, it is still my culture that you are attacking.

  • As a side note, if I were black man with full Kenyan heritage and possessed of a burning interest in Ireland, that would be totally awesome from virtually any point of view.

  • After this, refer your comments, please, up to the summary I provided, and talk in circles at that. Because, honestly, you are repeating yourself, and making Koichi do the same, and unless you come up with something new I don't really want to hear it. We are both rational people, and I vote for letting it drop. If you really feel the need to go on about this, message me/Koichi. This video really isn't the place to drag this out.

  • My problem is the idea that because he has Japanese heritage it is more "okay" for him to like Japan. Because he clearly *chose* Japan. He learned the language relatively late but speaks perfect American English, etc.

  • The abstract "Japaneseness" argument is a bit of a side-track. His claim is simply that he has been influenced by Japanese culture. My point is that we all have. My point is that many of us are, in practical terms, as "Japanese" as he, whether we have blood relationships or not.

  • ahaha

    兔と違いますよ。でもまあ、兔と同じIQがあるかな?

    that made me laugh

  • heheh I like boys over flowers too! Anyway, I think lisa nova wanted to make a "point" with all her spamming...

  • you're probably the most sane youtube user I've ever listened to. good work!

  • Nande Noruwe no hata motteru no?

  • it's just paper and ink :)

  • I don't get it, who is this lisanova person? Why is everyone talking about her?

  • I agree, why does it have to be negative for wanting to be more asian anyway lol. I see a lot of asian guys that act black for that matter, if you know what I mean. Thats like saying "thats gay!" and having it be negative. I really don't see why thats an insult?

Also, IIRC Koichi is part asian, making this a moot point...

  • 剣道のお面と怪獣が現れた時面白かったです。

  • Heeeey Koichi!! :D

You are using the Norwegian flag as a trademark or what? ;) I understood 60% of what you said in this, I am studying japanese in my spare time between work and friends =)

  • Haha er du norsk du også.. xD

    It's just so fun to se the norwegian flag haha... xD;;

  • Haha, japp ^^

Indeed it is, I have found the "norske" flag in 3 of his clips now ^^

  • Work on upping your J....weaboo

  • What does weaboo mean? I see it a lot these days...

  • コウイチ君がウィボーじゃなくて!・・・そしてYoutubeがスパムをたくさんある。

  • can "ja nakute" replace "ja nai"? cause that's what i meant to say.

  • me? weaboo? I thought only non-japanese people could be that. what is this world coming to when people with Japanese blood wish they were Japanese?

  • they're just jealous koichi☆.

  • When backed into a corner by a meaningless insult, you can definitely fall back on that meaningless defense. Don't justify racism by pointing to your meaningless heritage, bro. You're not Japanese.

  • how can you tell someone their heritage is meaningless? How can I not be at least (part) Japanese, when one of my Grandparents came to Hawaii from Japan? is that meaningless heritage?? I really don't understand what you're getting at - I think we must have different ideas as to what it means to be something.

  • I think you are trying to justify your interest in Japan by pointing to your Japanese grandparent. I think this is because you are insecure. I think you need to be honest with yourself, and think about things rationally, and stop giving credence to racist ideas.

You are and will always be a gaijin. You are a gaijin with an uncommonly strong interest in Japan. And that is okay.

  • of course i'm gaijin - i never said i wasn't...but ethnically, and in many ways culturally, I am Japanese as well. You don't have to be a citizen of a country to have that country's ethnicity and heritage, do you? Attacking me by saying I'm insecure is ridiculous - I was raised by my mother, who is Japanese and I lived in Japan. I think there is a big difference between "having an uncommonly strong interest in japan" and growing up in it.

  • I don't know your life-story. The important point is: why are you trying to justify your interest in Japan? Why do you flail at being called "weaboo"? You are more American than Japanese, culturally and ethnically. You speak perfect American English and third-year college Japanese. You studied Hana Yori Dango. Your interest in "the culture" is as much a choice as any other gaijin's.

  • Answers for you.

-You say: "You are more American than Japanese, culturally and ethnically" ... so you're saying I'm part Japanese then?

-I've never studied Hana yori dango, and I've only seen a couple episodes to boot

-How is my culture a choice when I grew up with it? Growing up with a single japanese mom and having constant interaction with Japanese relatives is hardly something a child can choose for him/herself.

-Why I flail at being called a weaboo? Well...because it is insulting.

  • here's the definition for weaboo. THIS is why I don't appreciate being called it. replace the "DOTs"

    urbandictionaryDOTcom/defineDOTphp?term=weaboo

  • Dude, you're missing the point. Japan is very exclusive. You are a gaijin because you were not raised in Japan. You are neither a native speaker of Japanese nor quite capable of communicating with Japan on a meaningful level. You haven't even watched all of your subtitled Hana Yori Dango.

  • i watched all the hana yori dango i've ever seen in japan...no subtitles there, but nice try. Did you have some kind of terrible experience in Japan where nobody accepted you or something? Were you bullied for not being Japanese or something?

  • Your answers are coming too quickly to keep this organized, but I'll try to be concise.

No, I have a very positive relationship with Japan.

You said: "How am I weaboo? ... what is the world coming to when people with Japanese blood wish they were Japanese?" The fundamental criticism is that you are trying to be Japanese by liking Japan. Your defense is that you ARE Japanese, so it's okay.

  • 1. You can like Japan without being a Weaboo.

    2. You can't be a Weaboo if you're Japanese.

    3. Weaboo is a word designed to be an insult, why would I want to be called that?

  • 2. My point is that your defense is neither a valid nor a necessary defense. You are not Japanese. You are not a 日本人。You are a 日系人。 You are a 外国人。 Japanese/Non-Japanese is very black-and-white. Race and ethnicity are not black-and-white.

  • You are still missing the point that I never claimed to be 100% Japanese. I only said I was part, which definitely goes along with your 日系人 comment. It makes me sad that you think people raised by first and second generation Japanese aren't Japanese at all. The only thing I don't have is citizenship and perfect speaking ability, and I'm working on the latter of the two. I'm not trying to be 100% Japanese, I am proud to be American, but I'm also proud to be Japanese.

  • What you lack is an understanding of what it means to be Japanese.

I do not think you are a guy who likes Japan for the heck of it. You are a guy who likes Japan because it means something to him. And that is okay. My secondary point is that your heritage does not justify your interest. My primary point is that your interest does not need justifying.

    Thanks for the conversation.

  • 3. Of course you don't want to be insulted. Your defense is what I don't like. What I recommend you do instead is ignore the insult, because it doesn't mean anything worthwhile. You are you, and you like Japan. Good enough? Your heritage is not relevant.

  • I agree I should not have responded now too, after all this :( I'm going to stop replying at this point because I can see we won't agree on anything. You think I'm some guy who likes Japan just for the heck of it, and I think I'm part Japanese (because I am).

  • Heritage is VERY relevant, because that is where you came from. Heritage, in many ways, makes up who you are. This is where I sign off, feel free to reply, but I'm done! Thanks for the conversation

  • Now, what your answer sounds like is a validation of the line of thinking that any vaguely "Japanese" person is allowed to plaster their life with Japanese stuff the way you do, but no one else is. Is that what you intended to imply?

  • My defense is not "I am japanese, so it's okay to like Japan." It's always okay to like Japan. It's okay to not like Japan. I don't care, and how do I plaster myself with Japanese stuff??

I think what this is coming down to is our definitions on what it means to be a nationality. Your thinking is very black and white, whereas I think people can have multiple ethnicities and cultures.

  • Here's my story, to be fair: I am white. I dated a Japanese girl. I was introduced to Japan. I lived in Japan. I have since returned to America. I would like to return to, live in, and understand Japan. I do not in the slightest want to teach English. In pursuit of my goals, I study Japanese every day. I am therefore very vulnerable to racist insults. But I don't want to be Japanese, even if that were a bad thing. But I'm still vulnerable to racist insults. (p.s. generally from Americans)

  • I also want to point out that some white people can be(come) Japanese - though it's very very rare.

  • Ummm... he's not flailing, he's debating the definition of weaboo. What the hell is your problem? Here you are, telling him all these things about himself (he's insecure, a gaijin, etc) and then you go and say something as flippant as, "Well, I don't know your life story". Psh. You sure act like you do.

  • and about the gaijin comment - i was actually a Japanese citizen for a few years through a mistake by the Japanese government (i was somehow linked up with relatives there) ... not any more though, and kind of off the point.

  • I don't know what point you're trying to make with your second comment. Whether you accidentally possessed Japanese citizenship for a few years or not, you are still a gaijin. Gaijin is unrelated to citizenship; it's a cultural difference.

I agree that Japan is an interesting place, and we all have our reasons for liking it. But your reasons are no different--certainly no better--than any other gaijin's. So stop endorsing racist thinking.

  • that's why i said it was off the point :) a few questions for you:

    1) how, specifically, am i endorsing racist thinking?

    2) what is YOUR requirement for race and ethnicity. Are you saying that where you are born decides what your ethnicity and culture is?

3)why is culture so black and white to you? Can you only be one thing?

  • 1) You are defending yourself from the "weaboo" insult by claiming Japanese heritage, as though this makes it "okay" for you to like Japan. By doing this, you validate the line of thinking that says only Japanese people can simultaneously be "normal" AND "like Japan". This is racist.

  • 2&3) I am saying that Japanese-ness is very restrictive. I am not denying that you have been influenced by Japanese culture. I am saying that you are not Japanese. You are a gaijin. And you are choosing Japan.

  • You say that I say that only Japanese people can simultaneously be "normal" AND "like Japan." I have no idea how you get this. There is a HUGE difference between liking Japan and being a Weaboo. I never said there is anything wrong with liking Japan. I'm constantly encouraging it. Look at the definition I provided earlier.

  • as for being "gaijin" I'll say it a second time. Yes, I am a gaijin. I never denied that. I am also only PART Japanese, nowhere did I say I was 100% anything. As for Japanese-ness being restrictive, I totally agree, but if you have Japanese blood, you will have a much much better shot. I'm pretty sure what you're saying is much much more racist than what I'm saying...

  • Ummm...wow. In amongst the redundant 'trying to convince the other they are right', there is some interesting discussion. Just make sure you guys understand that some things being said are OPINIONS not FACTS.

  • I swear to God I just got this text-message right now:

    「人はみんな外人だね~」

    And that is crazy profound.

  • i wish i understood this...:(...ignorance is a plague

  • WTH NORWEGIAN FLAG AGAIN!?!? Where are you!? D:

Why are you doing this?! XD *I am from Norway ... lol*

  • ドラマ好きでしょ?

    じゃあ、白夜行はどう思いますか??

    私はリサノバがきらいでわないけど、あのドラマはけっこ面白いと思う。

  • hahaha! Nice! You sir are a bad ass. thanks for the Video.

  • all igot was him talking about lisanova and spamming : D aww. <3 i love watching his vids.

  • KAWAII!!!!

  • Damn it someone teach me Japanese >,<

You're super cute ;) I love your videos (At least what I can watch lawlzors.)

  • kamikittaww

  • :P I dunno who lisanova is and i dont really care O_O u pwn xD and ppl below me o_o if u dont like the video just stfu, freedom of speech (~._.)~ bb

  • Lisanova isn't hurting anyone. Thanks to your comments your giving her more viewers. I think that we shouldn't attack anyone in youtube period. Youtube is to have fun..don't take this too fucking serious..youtube is your life ??? people WAKE UP..THIS IS JUST A SITE..don't hate on people without understanding where they come from... jaa ne ^_^

  • speaking of hating people without knowing them...you have a good history of that, from what I've seen/read. :P

  • Just a site, but with other REAL PEOPLE. Perhaps you have a point in that we should not attack anyone on youtube, but rather kindly suggest to them the things we think they could improve. I could agree with that.

Lisanova annoys me btw, I kindly suggest she stop posting messages in my profile. I don't even know her and her messages lack weight when she is also posting to 239823919 other profiles. Just imagine if there were 1000 of her doing the same thing.

  • 1000's of lisanova spammers would be sad, though, there are the porn-site spammers. I think youtube took care of robots though, so hopefully we'll see none of any of them anymore :)

  • hahahahaha I don't take YouTube that seriously!

We're all a bunch of attention whores (more or less subconsciously...that's what we are deep down...)and YT community nanka o shinjiteneeeeeeeee yo!

hahahaha! Still I wish all the best to those who wanna "make it big on YouTube"! (or thanx to YT) JIA YOU!

  • i c godzilla...

  • Koichi..don't fuck with lisanova..don't try to start a war agaisnt her, youtube is to have fun. Don't bring hate. People are being very dark about the subject don't mislead YET AGAIN IN YOUR VIDEOS...damare kusogaki..

  • Yes, because romanji'ed Japanese swear words are so threatening.

  • mislead yet again? when was the other time(s)? And I'm not trying to start any war - other people started it a while ago. I'm just offering my opinion, and telling Japanese youtube not to make the same mistakes. I don't like spam, either.

  • There is 2 kinds of criticism. Constructive, and non constructive. Koichi's is the former, yours is the latter IMHO.

I agree with you that youtube is to have fun. If you do not like the video, don't let it bother you and move on to a video that IS fun. Thats what I do, and it works...

  • this is an awesome way to see how much my japanese is improving ^^
