  • I am proud to say that my voice teacher is very good friends with her and have performed together!

  • Who's that idiot clapping at the beginning? -.-"

Wonderful contralto voice but the coloratur isn't fine!

  • I'm a coloratura fanatic and might complain like others are about Ms. Blythe's lack of flexibility compared to Horne, Berganza or Genaux... but only if her voice weren't so beautiful. Her clarity and consistency are really stunning and make this very enjoyable to listen to.

  • Ms. Blythe has a lovely contralto voice; it's a pleasure to hear. However, this aria, in my mind, will always be the incomparable Marilyn Horne's, who I had the privilege to see and hear twice in recital. She is a master of her craft!

  • @tonnetto69 qualche allevatore magari

  • @SkateNater Couldn't fit in everything - but wanted to add - is all a matter of opinion anyway, They are both great singers. Anyone hearing either of them live was or is lucky.

  • @SkateNater You make many good points. I heard Ms Horne live over 20 times including The Met Norma in '70. Their techniques are different. Each has something vocally unique.. Criticizing Ms Horne for anything is ridiculous. Are you as good a singer as she? Do you know what it takes to sing that way? As a life-long vocal student I can say that Ms Horne deserves all the accolades she accrued including being named one of the greatest singers of all time while she was still actively singing.

  • Certified Intergalactic! Clap, clap, clap...

Vocally clean and warm, great pronunciation as well ( better than most italian opera singers actually). Her control is excellent. Nice acting too. Definately 9 over 10 as to me. An italian opera singer

  • I didn't understand. Which of them has the largest voice?

  • wow....love this voice, reminds me of Marilyn Hornes...I agree, the runs are not sooo distintive, but her voice is soo clear and placed so beautifully, that I still dont mind hearing her sing rossini....brava stephanie! Love it!

  • BRAVA

  • Marilyn Horne sang the runs and fast passages more distinctly. However, I heard her live several times and her voice was quite small.

  • @TheVerdiBaritone I heard Ms Horne live many times . . . I wouldn't say it was a small voice, but it was not HUGE, and it carried over the orchestra very well. In her Norma performances with Sutherland, they were perfectly matched, and Sutherland had a really large voice. Anyway, Horne was an artist first and foremost, and was a great Rossini interpreter. I also like Blythe here, even though her runs are nothing like Horne's. And she doesn't have that playful quality.

  • Magnificent, beautiful, rich, warm voice of great delicacy and character! Very enjoyable indeed!

  • Direi ottima!

  • Certified Intergalactic! Fell in love with Stephanie Blythe's voice!

  • Parfaite.

  • Stephanie is great, but no one can sing this like Horne

  • Sorry but she actually DOES NOT sing the coloratura written in the score! This being said, she is a SUPERB mezzo and a hugely talented Artist. Maybe the wrong excerpt in a lighter Fach for such a huge voice. Listen: there's no flexibility .... as required by Rossini. Well, nobody is perfect ...

  • can you just imagine the 'Pensa alla patria'? Yeesh...

  • You're right, mmm how could that sound? But again, she's a tremendously talented singer, and I'm sure you agree with me. The voice, the color are splendid, but she should not sing that 'lighter' Rossini. Maybe she would be better suited for more dramatic parts (Ermione, Assedio, etc.)

  • fantastic clear voice! like it very much ...

  • i like it! she is excellent! where from is this?

  • Perfect Broadway belter. Just what queens are asking for.

  • perfect mezzo voice

  • @cantanteporsiempre she is a contralto ;) a very rare voice!

  • 200 Kg of Beautyful voice!!!

  • I have the same problem that everyone has and mine is compairing Steph to Marilyn Horne! That is not fair to Steph or Marilyn. We will not have anything like Horne but we can appreciate Stephanie for everything she does and she does it GREAT!!

  • good. but i don't like the trill, like hers. it seems that she doesn't have the depth.(just my opinion, you know)

  • I heard this woman sing live in this opera, Carmen, The Ring, Il Trovatore, and just recently Aida. She is amazing...she can sing..ANYTHING, and she does it better than anyone else singing now.

Even if her coloratura isnt as precise as a couple other mezzos, her diction, phrasing, acting, and beauty of voice are far superior to those with better coloratura...um I'll take Blythe in almost any role over almost any other singer..with some exceptions in a few roles.

  • Bella voce!

Misteri... Saluti

  • In effetti sì, ho un gusto finissimo. Grazie per averlo riconosciuto!

    :)

  • What's the source of this video? it is not the Philly video, since in that one she gets out of a plane.

  • .

    She looks like Mary poppins!

  • Fantastic and lovely! Very much like the early Marilyn Horne!!!!

  • she is so much better now!

  • Where was this performance? Philadelphia?

  • A powerhouse mezzo voice with excellent legato. But when it comes to coloratura, she just isn't as agile as other great Isabellas, Larmore, Kasarova, and Berganza. Also, she sounds a little too matronly for this role, methinks.

  • her voice is easily 4 times the size of the mezzos you mentioned, which is why she's not as agile. But the fact that she can even sing Rossini that well with that size voice is a testament to her training, technique and talent. She's a real inspiration to the other big mezzo voices!

  • really great also the setting on stage really esthetic

  • almost as good as marilyn horne. i LOOOOVE stephanie blythe!!!!
