Consumption of sharks' fin is moderated by it's cost. That is the 'meat' of the issue with people complaining about it. A small bowl of sharks' fin is easily $100.00 US in today's market.
For the number of people that can afford to eat it, that doesn't even come close to the amount of meat paste westerners consume in homogenized meat products like hotdogs, salami, processed meat and, of course, in fast food hamburgers and chicken'nuggets'.
I think a lot of hate comes from just simple jealousy
Totally agree with the comment about culture (don't care whose) not having the right to bring MANY species to the brink of extinction. I love Japanese cooking and sushi and was always pulling for Morimoto, he was my fave. Then he brought out the shark fin. What a DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
*oh yes, and im kind of sick of people from the rest of the world asking if Singapore is a part of china.... =/ nope, we're located in southeast asia, right below Malaysia.. and we have nothing to do at all, with china :D (HAHAHAHA just sayin' in case anyone gets the wrong idea and feel that im being biased)
i kind of agree, every single race and country has their own "bastards" and their "assholes", and i myself am a Singaporean chinese, but yes i kind of agree with the shark harvesting part. =/
Shark fin is ok aslong as it doesn't kill the species... what's so hard to understand? If you eat every godamn shark there wont be any fins left for you to eat -_-
I'll make it really simple. If you do not like the way these sharks are being treated, then don't watch this then. And to those of you who think shark fins are tasteless, shark fins can be really good if you prepare it right.
I find it disgusting that Whites eat caviar, though I find it completely elegant and sophisticated for East Asians to knew about using shark fin's in culinary cooking and able to tune out so many different dishes.
And no it's not ok for Whites to eat caviar, but I find it completely acceptable for East Asians to enjoy shark fins.
@bigfatdick5000 I can see why your name is bigfatdick5000. Because you probably like sucking 5000 big fat dicks. Nice job at showing how much of a disgusting hypocrite you are.
Shark's meat is not bad and people should eat the meat as well instead of just the fins cause most people just use the fins and leave the shark's with their fins severed there to die
If they were to use the whole shark, fine because the problem will be on fishing regulation. But the bastar cut the fin and drop the sharks still alive back to the ocean, fucking morons.
Plain and Simply Morons!!!! Use the Whole Shark. I have no problem with that. But seeing fishing fleets cut the fins off and dumping the sharks back in the ocean is F'd!!!
The Shark Is The Apex Of the water world of Fish. Wipe out the shark, the rest will follow. Sharks take care of the dead and dying. The rest of the shark could be used to feed people. You mean the fin is the only part of the shark you can eat? WOW...
I think the problem is two-fold. First and foremost, sharks are THE apex predator of their vast ecosystem. They are important in regulating fish populations, of culling the oceans of sick or injured animals, which in turn has implications for other populations, right down into the corals. So what differentiates the problem is that farmed animals are not in a natural ecosystem and don't regulate other species. But second is the vanity issue: we are being terribly wasteful and vainglorious
The Whites enjoys caviar and the Chinese say nothing about it. The Chinese enjoys Shark's fin and the Whites make a big issue about it. Sturgeon is endangered too.
Your Chinese culture threatens the biodiversity of life in all waters, not just the waters of China. Your culture's view on shark harvesting is short sighted, selfish and fully deserves to be condemned by the civilized world.

@Altarcraft Um, actually whites give whites a lot of shit about endangering the sturgeon. At the same time, there IS sustainable caviar as well... so the bitching is quieter as it only applies to PART of the market. Whereas shark fin is you know... basically as unsustainable as most any other form of fishery. Will note that most people find Shark Fin Tasteless, while caviar has a strong salt flavor. There's that too.
@Altarcraft The whites do actually have the right to complain about Shark's Fin... This goes against the rule of thumb for chefs... Do not waste ingredients... When they get the caviar, they still eat the fish they get it from.... Sharks aren't given that treatment.... It's just a cut and dump...
Mercury? renal failure? what are you babbling? If you really think the fin of a shark has such high metabolism that mercury is going to concentrate there, well, you think you know a lot more than you really do. And mercury doesn't cause renal failure. I suppose tofu burgers with organic vegetable buns sounds better - in that case you had better be growing everything yourself, since nothing is truly "organic".
So you don't agree with the fact that removing just the fins and disgarding the rest is wasteful. The fin itself only counts for about 5% of the sharks total mass. Anywhere from 76 million to 100 million shark are caught and de-finned alive only to be thrown back in to die. Now, I'm sure you also already know, since you are so intellectual, that the fins of a shark don't even add any flavor, usually adding things like chicken or vegetibles is how the soup earns it's taste.
So, truth be told, the population of shark in our oceans once well balanced eco system has declined rapidly only for the excitement of eating a dish which bares the name shark in it. I enjoy foods made of beef, pork, and such like that because these animals numbers are not decreasing everytime I eat a hotdog or burger. they are raised in mass numbers so don't expect to see a cow or pig on the endangered species lst anytime soon. But no one is raising shark livestock.
Some species of shark such as the "Great" White shark and the Whale shark ( which is a peaceful and exciting shark to dive with) are at an alarmingly low population yet are still fished for on a regular basis. Every eco system on this planet is balanced by a preditor/ prey relationship.. If any particular species of shark becomes extincted, their primary food source will be overly abundant. and if that occurs, the over population of that species will result in their food source's extinction.
Have you ever even eaten shark's fin soup? In essence you are saying that all I should be eating is burgers and hotdogs., because they are "raised in mass numbers". Right, brilliant justification. What do you think these animals are fed? You think they roam around eating grass in the field, or are they locked in a cage where they eat leftover parts from their own species? Unlike you, I enjoy eating real food that is prepared well, as in the Iron Chef series.
Eat anything you want, just realize that not everything is renewable or will renew itself fast enough not to be lost forever.. Here's an idea, lets go kill and eat as many endangered species as possible and see what happens.. Besides I didn't say anything about what YOU should be eating.. Eat whatever the hell you want.. Eat dog shit, won't matter a bit to me.. F*ck Tard.. I won't be commenting on this anymore..
If you knew anything about shark fin soup, then you would know that the shark fin provides no flavor. The same animals that are "raised in mass numbers" are used to give your socially irresponsible shark fin soup some flavor.
There is one scene in the movie where a guy is talking about the "magical" properties sharks have and that shark fins will help protect against cancer. How uneduacted is that? Shark fins are simply cartilage, which is comprised of protein. You would be better off eating an egg, since they are the only known perfect protein possessing all essential amino acids.
This movie needs to be released in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Taiwan.
i think shark fin is just tasty, even if it was bad for you health people would still eat it, like people eat potato chips. Except shark fins cost 100x as much.
lol i ate shark fins before, so does every one i know, Asian that is. We don't think that shark fins have any medicinal purposes, it's just tastes good and is expensive as hell to have. It's know as rich man's food not some sort of cure for cancer. I think the documentary is trying to generate more bias against eating shark fins.

Just because something is traditional and that everyone is doing it doesn't make it right. White people in America had slaves for 100's of years, I don't think anyone can argue that those times were the most impressive.
Realize that by ordering shark fin soup you're contributing to the death of many other species too: seals, turtles, dolphins, etc.
Watch end of clip "Sharkwater 7 of 9" and the beginning clip "Sharkwater 8 of 9"
so is offshore drilling, cargo ships hitting whales, and crashed oil tankers. all theses things should stop now and immediately to save the poor sea creatures. obviously you cannot destroy these industries, many people's lively hood depend on them. all you can do is to keep these business regulated and minimize the damage done.
The way they are promoting shark fin soup is appalling. Because of the practice of eating shark fin soup the worlds sharks are quickly vanishing from the seas--for what--a bowl of thin broth that is nothing but death to the sharks and poison to the man. Please do not eat shark fin soup or any other shark products--do it for the sharks, do it for the health of the sea and your health and for the future. There are many more good things to eat and shark fin will NOT make you a better man.
Although i don't completely agree with you and I eat sharks fin maybe thrice a year, the amount of shark's fin used for this battle is really somewhat appalling. I believe moderation is key and this seems over-indulgent. That's got to be at least 20 fins there.
i dont know if youve ever had sharkfin, but it tastes damn good. im not condoning it but the reason why they fetch such a high price at rougly 7.45 USD per pound, is to lower demand. eating shark fin will make your stomach happy imo.
Taste good? Shark fins itself is tasteless, if your dish was damn good it depends on how they cooked it and with what, it's not because of the fin itself....
clearly you cannot tell the difference between soup made real shark fins and rice noodle replacement. Its damn tasty, but i agree moderation is important in order to preserve this resource for future generations.
damn tasty? wow so please tell me, describe me how the soup tastes. Because even chinese cooks say that they need to put crabs and other things into the soup to give it some taste. The fin itself is tasteless and it's all only about about eating a shark fin!
The texture is completely different between real and fake shark fins. The texture of fake shark fins is similar to jelly, while the real ones are are quite springy. There's also a mild fishy taste to the real ones. Shark fins are just a cooking material, it depends on how you cook it to make it good. Especially with sea food you have to be very specific on how you prepare it or else it will turn out horrible. The fins don't make or break the soup, it's more like the cherry on a cake.
You should really do your research. Shark Finning is one of the most ecological destructive practices and because of it, many of the shark species are theatened or endangered.
It isn't always about you... but since you think so, enjoy those high levels of mercury in the shark fin soup you eat.
so people should stop eating shark fins all together? I do agree the over hunting of sharks is bad, just like any other animal, but i don't think the complete destruction of an industry is the way to go. I rather has regulation that limits how many sharks can be hunted annually. Or try to find a way to create shark farms like we have fish farms.
In theory that is a great idea, but people are already illegally finning sharks off the coasts of many countries that have banned it.
Also, almost all shark species have a very sensitive neurological system and can't be confined without dying... not to mentione it takes decades for them to reach maturity. Factory farmed sharks just wouldn't be a profitable business.
Check out the movie "Sharkwater" It's really informative and there's some great photography.
Chinese people love shark fins as much as Russians love caviar, you just can't go cold turkey. Its like asking Eskimos to stop eating seals. Cars are contributing to green houses gases so everyone stops driving and take the bus? I think laws should be stricter for fishermen and more coast guards to patrol areas where illegal fishing is happening.
The main sponsor was Nissan (yes, the car company). Also, this was a VERY popular show at the time, so other sponsors were willing to spend plenty of money for advertising.
30K is not that much. Remember, each "Friends" star was getting $1 mil per episode; so that was about $6mil for just the ACTORS each show. That is nuts.
Chen-san would have done that Battle of the Masters event with Sakai-san and Morimoto-san but had scheduling conflicts. Believe me, I bet he didn't mind coming to the US for those battles, because he is popular among US Iron Chef fans. It was unfortunate that he couldn't make it...
look people.. if you think this is so barbaric, then why did you watch it?? shark is soooooooo good. if you don't want it, don't eat it, more for those that will eat it then. now sit down, shut up and eat your food!!
and on an unrelated note, people that complain about nature and say natural acts like a polar bear killing and eating a seal are "barbaric and that the polar bear should be killed" should be slapped...really hard. it's nature... shut up already. -End Rant-
Sadly, the rest of the shark isn't as valuable/worthwhile. It's like rhinos being killed for their horns. People who hunt/fish these animals only want the money parts. It's a shame how they are fished, but again it's not our place to dictate how others eat. Governments are trying to promote responsible harvesting of 'natural resource' critters and attempting to protect those that are endangered. I'm sure, if you care that much, there are better ways to help out than posting on YouTube videos.
Sorry, but it's not that simple. As much as I like shark fin, even China's setting up restrictions about finning. It isn't nature just to take the fin and dumping the rest back into the ocean. At the very least the rate as it's going...let's just say in a few years, you won't have that sooooooo good stuff to go around.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hope that one day we can look back at these clips and rest easy that the killing of sharks for their fins was illegalized. Better yet hopefully the industry collapsed because people shunned the practice and the food voluntarily. Its horrible what this demand is doing to sharks and the marine ecosystem.
Listen guys, I appreciate all sorts of food, live dead I don't care, but only when the animal, at least in the way I see it, does not react in a visibly negative way to the harm that is being done to it. So for example, i say a clam boiled alive does not demonstrate a reaction which generates empathy for me, but a calf does. That's why I wouldn't cook a calf alive! If it was anesthetised and then killed then I would. Sharks for me, demonstrate that response as such I think it's barbaric!!!!!!!!
Even when i'm chinese and used to love eating shark fin until i noe the facts...i think this is far too cruel...besides...normal shark fin broth hav the taste only becoz of the other ingredient like pork ribs...shark fin by itself is actually tasteless watch animal planet stuff and sometimes they show disturb ing sights of shrark fin mass warehouse...
COME ON!do u guys even know how shark hunters get the fins???they take a bait...drag it up at the boat, cut the fins kick it bac in...they wouldnt even kill the shark before taking the fin and they jus let tthe shark die of pain and over bleeding...every year sharks decrease in numbers in a pattern...losing 10% more sharks than last year...
Shark finning is a barbaric practice that has a large hand in endangering a vital part of the Earths. Already it has virtually eliminated 90% of the sharks in the ocean.
Chinese chefs need to take a moral stand and let their barbaric ancient practice go the way of the dodo before sharks do and the entire world makes them pay.
Watch the documentary Sharkwater and see for yourself!
I love the show...my ONLY issue is the Shark Fin. It really is terrible that they are simply dumped back in the ocean. They are natures greatest creation (as far as I'm concerned) and tremendously impressive to be in the water with. Just thought I'd comment. And for any people who have issue with this comment, I eat Foie Gras...I don't give a rats ass about ducks or geese.
I agree. The Japanese are mavericks of cuisine, but one thing I consider wrong is the harvesting of shark fins and whale tongues. They chop off the small parts and dump the fish back into the ocean. It is a major issue with Asian and Scandinavian countries. They are over-fishing sharks and whales, and animals such as dolphins are collateral damage. People need to wake up to this fact. You can have great cuisine without making species extinct!
Screw PETA...if u guys from PETA loves life so much, please don't eat vegetables too, they grow rite??..so they have a life rite?...they might feel pain when u cut and cook them rite???....unbelievable, if u guys don't like to eat meat, don't force people to live like you.
I'm not from PETA. I think PETA is bullshit. I believe in conservation. You bring up the example of vegetables. Well vegetables are crops, they are grown solely for consumption and manufacturing. Sharks and whales cannot be grown or bred in captivity as abundantly as they breed in the wild. Over-fishing will make these species extinct, and future generations will never be able to see them.
if Japan / China / Asia want to destroy the entire world shark population to feed their appetite for shark fins, they should be putting money into creating a sustainable shark population.
i have no problem with people eating it, but the seas are in such bad shape.
if sharks go, the entire ocean ecosystem will collapse and nobody anywhere will eat fish.

Please do not eat shark fin.
It is tasteless, and flavour comes from chicken and meat stock, therefore it is over priced.
Furthermore, shark being the top predator, its body has accumulated mercury, which is not good for health,
There are plenty of other food around other than shark fin soup, which does not fill your stomach and is not essential for sustaining life.
Let the sharks live!

3) Most Chinese people don't give half an ass about extinction, why would they care about sturgeon?

There is one scene in the movie where a guy is talking about the "magical" properties sharks have and that shark fins will help protect against cancer. How uneduacted is that? Shark fins are simply cartilage, which is comprised of protein. You would be better off eating an egg, since they are the only known perfect protein possessing all essential amino acids.
This movie needs to be released in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

i think shark fin is just tasty, even if it was bad for you health people would still eat it, like people eat potato chips. Except shark fins cost 100x as much.
saint666 2 years ago
lol i ate shark fins before, so does every one i know, Asian that is.

Realize that by ordering shark fin soup you're contributing to the death of many other species too: seals, turtles, dolphins, etc.

so is offshore drilling, cargo ships hitting whales, and crashed oil tankers. all theses things should stop now and immediately to save the poor sea creatures. obviously you cannot destroy these industries, many people's lively hood depend on them. all you can do is to keep these business regulated and minimize the damage done.

There are many more good things to eat and shark fin will NOT make you a better man.
snakesteve68 3 years ago
Although i don't completely agree with you and I eat sharks fin maybe thrice a year, the amount of shark's fin used for this battle is really somewhat appalling. I believe moderation is key and this seems over-indulgent. That's got to be at least 20 fins there.
SolariaAngeli 3 years ago
i dont know if youve ever had sharkfin, but it tastes damn good. im not condoning it but the reason why they fetch such a high price at rougly 7.45 USD per pound, is to lower demand. eating shark fin will make your stomach happy imo.
DDX09 2 years ago
Taste good? Shark fins itself is tasteless, if your dish was damn good it depends on how they cooked it and with what, it's not because of the fin itself....
swissdiveinstructor 2 years ago
clearly you cannot tell the difference between soup made real shark fins and rice noodle replacement. Its damn tasty, but i agree moderation is important in order to preserve this resource for future generations.
saint666 2 years ago
damn tasty? wow so please tell me, describe me how the soup tastes. Because even chinese cooks say that they need to put crabs and other things into the soup to give it some taste. The fin itself is tasteless and it's all only about about eating a shark fin!
swissdiveinstructor 2 years ago
The texture is completely different between real and fake shark fins. The texture of fake shark fins is similar to jelly, while the real ones are are quite springy. There's also a mild fishy taste to the real ones. Shark fins are just a cooking material, it depends on how you cook it to make it good. Especially with sea food you have to be very specific on how you prepare it or else it will turn out horrible. The fins don't make or break the soup, it's more like the cherry on a cake.
saint666 2 years ago
You should really do your research. Shark Finning is one of the most ecological destructive practices and because of it, many of the shark species are theatened or endangered.
It isn't always about you... but since you think so, enjoy those high levels of mercury in the shark fin soup you eat.
Tonsilloliths 2 years ago
so people should stop eating shark fins all together? I do agree the over hunting of sharks is bad, just like any other animal, but i don't think the complete destruction of an industry is the way to go. I rather has regulation that limits how many sharks can be hunted annually. Or try to find a way to create shark farms like we have fish farms.
saint666 2 years ago

I think laws should be stricter for fishermen and more coast guards to patrol areas where illegal fishing is happening.

maybe 30 000 yen which is about $300 US

The main sponsor was Nissan (yes, the car company). Also, this was a VERY popular show at the time, so other sponsors were willing to spend plenty of money for advertising.

30K is not that much. Remember, each "Friends" star was getting $1 mil per episode; so that was about $6mil for just the ACTORS each show. That is nuts.

I miss Chen Kenichi. I think they need to bring him back for an episode of Iron Chef America, like they did with Sakai when he faced Flay.
GodOfGamblers81690 3 years ago

-End Rant-

here here. i quite like shark, as long as the whole shark was used. cutting off the fin and throwing the rest over is just wasteful
knownofear1 3 years ago 31
Sadly, the rest of the shark isn't as valuable/worthwhile. It's like rhinos being killed for their horns. People who hunt/fish these animals only want the money parts. It's a shame how they are fished, but again it's not our place to dictate how others eat. Governments are trying to promote responsible harvesting of 'natural resource' critters and attempting to protect those that are endangered. I'm sure, if you care that much, there are better ways to help out than posting on YouTube videos.
VampyressKatt 3 years ago 5
i strongly agree.
knownofear1 3 years ago
@knownofear1 do they really throw the rest out?
ionglacier 1 year ago
@ionglacier that's what i'm told. Flake (shark meat) can be really tasty
knownofear1 1 year ago
Sorry, but it's not that simple. As much as I like shark fin, even China's setting up restrictions about finning. It isn't nature just to take the fin and dumping the rest back into the ocean. At the very least the rate as it's going...let's just say in a few years, you won't have that sooooooo good stuff to go around.

I hope that one day we can look back at these clips and rest easy that the killing of sharks for their fins was illegalized. Better yet hopefully the industry collapsed because people shunned the practice and the food voluntarily. Its horrible what this demand is doing to sharks and the marine ecosystem.
kyu012 3 years ago
Listen guys, I appreciate all sorts of food, live dead I don't care, but only when the animal, at least in the way I see it, does not react in a visibly negative way to the harm that is being done to it. So for example, i say a clam boiled alive does not demonstrate a reaction which generates empathy for me, but a calf does. That's why I wouldn't cook a calf alive! If it was anesthetised and then killed then I would. Sharks for me, demonstrate that response as such I think it's barbaric!!!!!!!!

Even when i'm chinese and used to love eating shark fin until i noe the facts...i think this is far too cruel...besides...normal shark fin broth hav the taste only becoz of the other ingredient like pork ribs...shark fin by itself is actually tasteless watch animal planet stuff and sometimes they show disturb ing sights of shrark fin mass warehouse...
az095hgl 3 years ago

I love the show...my ONLY issue is the Shark Fin. It really is terrible that they are simply dumped back in the ocean. They are natures greatest creation (as far as I'm concerned) and tremendously impressive to be in the water with. Just thought I'd comment. And for any people who have issue with this comment, I eat Foie Gras...I don't give a rats ass about ducks or geese.
hmsgough 4 years ago 2
You can have great cuisine without making species extinct!

bungsony 4 years ago
