That crowd was the prototypical metal audience. Just a few short years later, people jumped like that for Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. AC/DC: blazing trails since 1974.

Review pt.4. Scott said the TV cameras put a psychological as well as a physical barrier between them and the crowd, but the TV coverage, so scarce for rock in this country, was well worth the sacrifice.
“We were not really giving a rock show to a paying audience and I doubted whether we were getting an honest response. It was very much a compromise.”
It may have been a compromise, but judging by the audience’s response, it was worth it, if only just.”
Review pt.3. AC/DC, an Australian based band, played with competent arrogance, their raw and somewhat vicious rock full of fast blast and frighteningly loud.
Scott added novelty to the occasion by giving the star of the show, lead guitarist Angus Young, a shoulder ride through the crowd.
Malcolm Young, Angus’s brother, on guitar, Phil Rudd on drums and Cliff Williams on base (sic) kept very much in the background during what seemed a two-man show.
Review pt.2. The programme is called Rock Goes To College, and so it did and went down very well for the few heavy metal diehards present among the 700-strong crowd, but I have my reservations. OK, so many of the audience were bopping about even before the band had belted out the thumping bass intro to their second number Live Wire. But I was destined to hear an annoying repetition of guitar rifts (sic), so that by the middle of the concert I felt as if I’d heard it all before.
This gig was on Wednesday 25 Oct '78... XTC played on the 28th.

“BBC Television came to Essex University, AC/DC came from Paris, rock came to college and I wondered whether it was all worth it.
A five-piece heavy metal rock band, AC/DC interrupted their 14-day European tour to play a concert at Essex University that will go out nationwide on BBC2 at 11.45 next Friday.
this rocks brilliantly - 12 bar boogie hard bangin rock at it's best - they were bloody genius back then - and oh my god look at Bon, the true rock and roll star!!!!!
OK ACDC are still pretty good with Brian Johnson, of course there is some great albums there,BUT, the fire went out of their music when Bon died, and they haven't been the same. When Moneytalks or thunderstruck come on the radio I turn it fast.
@HagusYoung Brian Johnson sure he is a great replacement but he is nothing in the same league as Bon Scott....Brain Johnson jumped into the spotlight and ran with it.
