actually, there are two instruments featured in this video. scroll back to 40-41, when she turns, you see that the chin rest is on the side, but when she lays, the chin rest is in the center.

and also, violins do some with chin rests in the center, too. my orchestra teacher has one, and it definitely isn't a viola.

Classical music videos are dreadful though aren't they?! You can almost feel the pain of the producers saying "OK, so classical music videos can't be like pop videos because by enlarge we're targetting a different audience. So what do we do? Hmm... Any ideas... Err... No-one? Nope?! OK let's just do something weird and hope no-one notices!".

Haha!  Yeah, it's a weird video. But then again, when some musicians play, they see pictures, not exactly stories. So maybe, just maybe, this is what she sees in her head when she plays this piece. P.S. It isn't her real violin. The violin in this video has a chin rest that is in a different position on the violin than the violin that she plays.

The violin she lays down is a modern violin with a chin rest. The one she pulls through the bars at 2:30 is the one she plays. It's much older, with no chin rest (watch some of the videos of her in concert, and she wraps a cloth between the wood of the violin and her neck). The neck is a bit less raked and the scroll seems more pronounced.

Hilary is a delight to watch live. Granted she isn't emotive like the violnists you metioned, but she does put on a good show. She has all the talent to be one of the best and perhaps she'll grow into being more expressive. She does need ot smile more you're right on that point. hilary is a talented violinist but she, like sarah change and even joshua bell to some extent, plays it so safe. she doesn't explore and emote. the video tries to be creative and the concept is interesting, but like her music there is no emotion. she should watch people like nadia sonenberg, anne akiko meyers, and yehudi menuhin to see how much more you cna bring out of music through emotion and interpretation. and she should smile more too. the technique is there,,,just give us some feeling.

Wow! Very innovative, in the style of Paganini's approach to performances (with many surprises). Paganini used novelty and the fear of the unknown and the finiteness of Life to catch people's attention, start a little controversy.
