  • I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, Firefox 6.0.2 Stable and have joined the Youtube HTML5 test, this video does not play.

I have these add-ons installed, Adblockplus, Request Policy and Quick Java with Flash disabled if it makes a difference. :shrugs:

  • nice

  • I followed along with the Wizard HTML 5 localStorage demo typing in exactly what Ian did including the step 2 and step 3 files which he created before the talk but it doesn't work in FF4 or IE9. However it does work in Chrome 11.

  • there is a problem with google chromes required attribute... if the form element is a password input, the error message comes up (if there is no data) as *********

  • @FizzyWodawg I'll do it if you all do!

  • instead of transform... so awesome

  • @FizzyWodawg I already do that with some of my websites :D Only if the website visitors are meant to be somewhat smart with computers.

  • @EduardoMLD Still pretty piss poor in comparison to Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

  • This language is one of my favorites...Forever,....

  • @FizzyWodawg I am currently using the Internet Explorer 9 beta, and as much as I hate to say it, it has satisfied me more than Chrome so far.

  • What editor does hixie use in this demo?

  • @werdnativ Emacs.

  • @FizzyWodawg wtf ru tlkin bout i use internet explorer on the daily nigga

  • @ThievingSeven , GET A BETTER BROWSER NIGGA

  • @FizzyWodawg I do that already lol... i hate ie...

  • why i'm not surprised to see windows needs to be patched at 13:30

  • @FizzyWodawg As much of a good idea that is, you would be missing out on a hell of alot of web traffic.

  • Could you guys makes your fonts larger? My eyes are bleeding.

  • How can I test HTML5?

  • @FizzyWodawg Yes

  • I'm amased!! I was using Google Chrome and this video was lagging every 8-10 seconds. A friend told me to download Opera, and i downloaded it; I played this video on Opera and not even a single stop to buffering.

  • I personally prefer IE8 to Firefox, but I do admit that it needs to have more support for HTML5.

  • @FizzyWodawg

actually the thing is to tell to this not try to change things

to screw it like girls changing shoes and stuff, not every all think like girls.

But that must be a solid new function, that's what it actually is.

    So... yeah,for now.

  • Flash player is better... FULLSTOP.

  • @gezzaky Flashplayer and html5 are not mutually exclusive

  • It is rather ironic that a video about HTML5 features we should want but cannot use is not available as an HTML5 video...

  • thanks for the assistance :))!!

  • Would that guy ever have sex?

  • @vidas2010 it is a terminal application (think windows "cmd") running a command line editor. Not sure if it is joe, jed, ed or which one as I mostly use vi or mcedit.

hope this clears that one up :)

  • Most people that use IE, are moms and dads that dont know about Firefox, which is used by those who know about the best there is.

  • @FizzyWodawg thats what i do, I dont intent to make some bucks out of the internet, so users like it or don't, I dont care, what I care is making great apps that serve targeted user better.

  • funny how this is over an hour long. exceptions made to google vids eh.

  • What does the number 33 mean?

  • 86 minutes... do i really wanna watch all this?

  • or help me with making it work at all, thank you.

    ~SheLovely30.

  • @SheLovely30 Try this, go to the front page, scroll down to the bottom of the page, click 'Help' then scroll down and in the right hand corner there is a link called 'testtube' click that. then scroll to and click HTML 5 beta, then click 'leave HTML 5 beta' Hopefuly that all worked out.

Another way is to switch to either Safari or Chrome.

  • HTML 5 is not working!! I need one of you guys to help me out. Please send me a message on how to get it off my account. I shouldn't have switch to it and don't know how to go back to where it was.

  • @FizzyWodawg it would be fun for a mass movement to do this... even if the site was compatible... just redisrect all IE browsers to the page.

If everyone did it... we'd see microsoft invest money in improvement.

  • @FizzyWodawg People don't know what a browser is? LOL, some don't even know what a program is =P Good luck!

  • 665 videos, lol.

  • I've been impressed with my experience of YouTube's HTLM 5 beta so far..

I've had non of the annoying stuttering problems that crop up with using Flash, & videos seem to load at a much steadier rate.

There is still a way to go before it rivals Flash for video image quality but i'd rather have a video that plays when i want it to as opposed to a video that plays when it wants to.

  • Here are the facts about the h.264 codec, end users don't pay for it, neither video uploaders nor viewers

Free internet video (like youtube) pay barely anything for it

Browser vendors on the other hand do pay for it which is why Mozilla wont play ball

The patent is held by a group of companies including Apple, Sony and Microsoft.

I was shocked to find this out too, please read the full article as there seems to be a lot of confusion over the matter

    tulesblog(dot)(com)/h264-license-explained

  • until that license expires, which it does here soon. But thats not the point, we need OPEN STANDARDS for an OPEN web...

  • The iPhone and iPad doesn't run Flash , but what does that have to do with HTML5 ?

The ideas behind HTML5 were pioneered in 2004 by the WHATWG

    Who is WHATWG ?

The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group

The WHATWG was founded by individuals from Apple, the Mozilla Foundation and Opera Software.

That's right Apple is pushing this, and Google on the other hand just want a new way to put more advertising on the web , and HTML5 is a perfect tool for pushing Cloud Computing.

  • Has anyone watched this WHOLE video?

    Lol.

    Loving Html5 btw.

  • HTML 6 is ages better

  • frustrating? mate you have no idea!!!

  • hell yeah! I cant stand using ie on my friend's computers it makes me feel all virusy....well so does windows but thats another story

  • yea...

  • alot of people are concerned and believe that it's just gonna be one big mess, I must confess this video got me kinda excited!

  • I discuss this video in my article tulesblog (dot) (com), would love to hear peoples responses on the subject and what is the right attitude to take to the upcoming standard

  • nice article, I agree with ur stance in that HTML 5 -if executed properly- should be a unifying force rather than just chucking more on the pile, let's hope the mess with the codecs gets sorted out soon!

  • I'm a reviewer of HTML5... First test big fail.... takes years to load a video in a slow connection ;) (not this video, a short 30 second video)

  • @ComradeSlice Yeah man, some people don't get it! Don't understand the Art of Developing in Os X

  • @batitombo. I don't know why people voted you down but I gave you a thumbs up. I'm a MacOS X programmer. Darwin based platforms like MacOS X and iPhone OS are the only one's I'll ever use.

  • Cartoons that were made in Flash Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney and more... 1.Adult Swim << 2.Disney's Little Einsteins 3.Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi 4.Atomic Betty 5.The Buzz on Maggie 6.Yin Yang Yo 7.Pucca << 8.Skunk Fu! 9.The Mr. Men Show I could go on all day telling you cartoon made all in Flash but you know how to use Google... Most of the cartoons on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney are now made in Flash ...
  • @maw88ify no they aren't made in flash. They're made as movies and then played using flash player.

  • @frameflow

No they are made I Flash CS4 and played on T.V.

Flash is not just a video plug-in you download...

Most people have no clue what Flash is...

Flash is any Animation tool, and is also used to make video players, AIR apps, Mac apps, Windows apps , Papervision3D, Sandy3D, augmented reality, WiiFlash, and as of Flash CS5 iPhone apps, and used to make software , video game...

Flash when it first came out was called >> FutureSplash Animator Macromedia re-branded it Flash and sold it to Adobe

  • @maw88ify Flash is so inferior to html5. 90% of Mac crashes are purely due to flash, it's slow poorly designed and sure it has functionality but people don't want to spend ages waiting for websites to load with the very real possibility of a browser crash when they could use HTML5 with absolutely no worries. Since Apple so widely publicized how much they hate flash, it's on it's way down. I hope to see it gone as soon as possible.

  • @gobldegook1 Hahah that's not because Flash inferior.

Mac's crash because they are inferior to Windows / PC's...

I have a cheap Windows / Linux PC and it never crashes because of Flash...

Flash never crashes my computer, but I've had HTML5 crash it...

  • @maw88ify I have had a lot of experience with a various range of windows and Linux based operating systems and they both crash frequently due to flash. Apple OSX is the most efficient personal computer operating system (in combination with it's components) on the market, to argue otherwise is mere stupidity or in-experience.

Flash is very slow to load, why do you think smartphone browsers (not talking about iOS here) have the option to disable flash. Because it's SLOW and inefficient

  • @gobldegook1 In all my year of using Windows and Linux I have never had Linux lock up, or crash because of Flash. The fact is Linux Android Phone runs Flash fine. Most product made by Apple are the ones having the most problems with Flash. HTML5 was start by WHATWG group ... Who is WHATWG Group ? The WHATWG was founded by individuals from Apple... So Apple is pushing HTML5 because they have more control over it...

  • @maw88ify and yea there's no denying that Apple would definitely be working toward the ultimate goal of dominant control over html5. It is within their best business interests

  • @gobldegook1

Claiming MAC OX is the most efficient OS just because in your experience Flash doesn't crash on MAC OS for you I would say is 'stupid' (I would never call a human being stupid, but to take your word, I'll put it in quotations).

That's like someone saying since the Max OSX doesn't offer the best support for the latest storage technology (Solid State Drives) because it lacks trim or other certain features (until Lion comes out) it doesn't belong in the conversation

  • @gobldegook1 Also, Flash is an option to disable on smartphones for security reasons more than the reason that it is slow and inefficient in your claim. By the way, I'm not Pro-Flash; I prefer HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript/jquery...

  • @maw88ify A good operating system should not have to go out of it's way to specially code work arounds for an old inferior technology. That doesn't make it a bad operating system, it means it's an operating system that's willing to take the crap from pro flash people for the period necessary to see this old technology made obsolete or long enough for flash to pick up it's act and fix it's bad coding.

  • @TheAshination HTML5 It is the fifth revision of the HTML standard (originally created in 1990) ,and HTML4 came out in 1997.

Flash was introduced in 1996. So this means HTML is way older technology, and Flash is newer technology.

  • @maw88ify Precisely my point. I'm glad we're finally making some decent changes that flash has worked so hard at trying to replicate (effectively I'll give em that. But not efficiently)

  • @TheAshination What are you talking about ? Flash never copied anyone Flash started off as just an animation program called "FutureSplash" next it was bought by "Macromedia" and renamed "Macromedia Flash" , and they added the ability to code in Flash using Actionscript, and then it was bought by Adobe and is now called "Adobe Flash CS5" ...

HTML5 is only code no UI, but Flash CS5 is a drawing / Animation tool/ augmented reality/ WiiFlash / iPhone / android development kit... and MORE

  • @frameflow

So they are all cartoon made in Flash the program... Look up "Flash CS5" Google it and see what it is...

  • Yay get rid of garbage flash!

  • The only reason I would ever want Flash to be replaced by HTML5 functions is that Flash uses WAY too much of the CPU.

  • Why Flash will Not be replaced with this crap. The fallowing are all Flash ... 1.Papervision3D 2. Augmented Reality 3D 3.Sandy3D 4.SumoPaint 5.Disney Toontown , FarmVille, Big Fish Games, Nickelodeon 6. Adobe AIR apps Like TweetDeck 7. WiiFlash that lets you make Wii games in Flash 8. Flash CS5 will be able to export Iphone apps... that's right as of CS5 flash will be able to make iPhone apps... It's already used to make Mac apps. and on and on... Can HTML5 do all that ? NO
  • I only know what 4 of the things you said are

    Flash CS5

    SumoPaint (its a downloadble program)

    Farmville

Adobe Air (not online, there applications)

  • Yes they are applications and most are made in Flash... So HTML 5 may replace Flash Video Players , but it is a long way from ever replacing Flash the program...

  • Comment removed

  • iphones dont support flash so i dont know where you got that information from.....

  • No I never said it supported flash... What I said was that Flash CS5 well include a Packager for iPhone that will let you publish ActionScript 3 projects to run as native applications for iPhone. It is a fact, and it came from Adobe labs web site... All you have to do to look it up is Google "flash cs5"

I know what I'm talking about I'm certification, and a Super Moderator of a Flash forum...

  • well arent u amazing?

  • Then you should know that Adobe is taking steps to eliminate Flash. The iPad does not support the flash player...I dont think that this will stand whatsoever though. I myself happen to love Flash.

  • html5 probably could do it... but it would be such a pain in the ass to work with. It would take a computer programmer to make something, and usually... they aren't as creative as designers. I don't see who their market is...

  • Flash must die!!! XD

  • HTML5 is Awesome, and is much better than Flash programatically, however it will NOT replace Flash. You're telling me that you're going to write all kinds of html and javascript for a simple flash banner animation? I think not. I'm not a huge fan of Flash myself, but it's silly to think the canvas ability is the demise of Flash.

  • I would rather write "all kinds" of code, just so I don't have to pay $234,572,465,734,840,762,953,485,706,983.99 for flash...

  • @TreyRust You pay $700, once, If you're good, then you should get that money back in a month or two. If you're smart, then you'd buy the Master Collection and get everything for only a few hundred more.

There are plenty of designers out there who don't know a lick of code, and most of there work doesn't use action script, it uses a timeline. Easy, Simple, and thats something HTML5 and Javascript will never accomplish.

  • thats hundreds or dollars, I can't pay for it up front, thats my problem... I know I could MAYBE make it back, but it it WAY overkill...

and for those who use timelines, aren't you talking about animators? if you are, then I must say flash is HORRID for animation, I am an animator, I know...

  • Javascript can do almost all that minus Adobe Air, and the performance is better. If you think of it, Javascript is a lot like AS2, the thing is Flash hadn't natively supported 3D, but the community made it possible through angles. Javascript is capable of the same thing. However, If you look at it from a business standpoint, Flash can do all of it at half the time it takes to write it out in JS. As we all know, time is money. Until JS evolves to the monster that is AS3, Flash will be there.

  • HAHAHA

    you are no animator, kid.

  • @RHunderOATH

You know what's funny I made $700 on just one Flash job I did using Flash + Papervision3d and Flash + Augmented Reality... So yes if your good at flash it can pay for it's self in just one or two jobs... and your right HTML 5 and Javascript will never have a timeline... very good points...

  • True, true...but the security we get with HTML5 will be wroth it.

  • Everyone assuming this will replace Flash anytime soon, just stop hoping, its going to be another 20 to 30 years before this is a major part of the web.

Web Developers spent so much time and money developing out of Flash, that I don't see them abandoning it anytime soon.

The next generation of Smartphone will all come with Flash Player 10.1 pre-installed. Flash Player 10.1 includes hardware acceleration, and it's built for phones, so it uses less CPU.

  • So chill out people, Adobe listens.

Even if/when Flash fall to HTML5, you'll still see it in Adobe Air, it'll be around forever, get used to it.

  • @paldepind: How do you prevent people from cheating with JavaScript games? I mean you can modify the page and the variables so easily with Firebug and other extensions.

  • @kiwi7900 Yeah! That's a big problem. But if you "compile" your JavaScript it get's pretty hard for people to figure out what variables to change. And I could say the same about Flash games, it's not really hard to cheat in those either.

  • HTML5 and Silverlight is the new Adobe Flash. ;)

  • noooooo silverlight >:|

i'm not installing some crazy plugin D:

BTW guys SVG is an awesome web vector graphics format that supports animation and scripting just like flash. the only browser that doesnt support SVG is internet explorer, but no one cares about internet explorer ;) so yeah, we have lots of technologies that can allow us to abandon flash.

  • Finaly flash is about to die! :D

  • Wow, he got a video to play in a browser. Stop the press!

  • clearly you don't understand how much of a leap forward this is to not have to use flash and its poor implementation on any non-windows platform (phones, linux, mac, ANYTHING non windows)

  • @Euphoracle actually I remember it was poor implemented even for Windows.

  • Nice geeky text editor. Geek

  • youtube with html5 = divine

it's running so fast on my netbook i can't believe it. hope they will start replacing flash all over the web now :).

  • ahh the new HTML5 youtube with the new video players is certainly a good improvement

  • @s9729126c YouTube still uses Flash, it'll be years before we see an HTML5 player as default on YouTube.

  • @Smurfster1 well it just happened ;-) Whahaha.

  • Sadly that's true. You'd be surprised how many people still use IE6, and I don't expect that to change overnight :(

  • @s9729126c Well shut my mouth I had no idea they'd expanded it from a tech demo to fully working beta.

  • Yeah, but I've come across a few videos already that just display garbage with the HTML5 player :/

  • He's retarded but you can't spell "Flash" -- whatever.

  • I want youtube to get converted to HTML5...

FLASH IS CRAP I HATE IT!

  • videos in ogg, not in privative formats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent talk. Thanks for putting it up. :)

  • youtube should stream all videos in html.

  • Google Chrome + Youtube HTML5-ifier Add-on.

  • Look at who I replied to before making stupid comments.

  • I was just pointing out that fact that you can't load a youtube video without javascript. Go ahead, turn off javascript support for your browser, and then try to watch video.

  • @mout12 Give me one good reason why JavaScript can't replace flash?

  • newgrounds

  • @mout12 JavaScript can do games too ;)

  • @paldepind How about good games?

  • @str3ber That's no problem. For instance I've made one: redsplat . org/spacenavigator/

  • @paldepind designers that use timelines.

  • Timelines for what? Animtaions?

  • Animations yes, but more importantly, little things that designers make such as slideshows and what not, it'd be silly to do all that in Javascript when you can do it in flash on the timeline in 10 minutes.

  • OMG, 1:26 hours!

  • chrome is the best

  • LOL! FireFox is where its at... at least thats what i think

  • hehe, I haven't met a web-designer that doesn't make fun of IE :)

Heck, even Microsoft's own marketing department makes fun of it: "Internet Explorer 8 invested heavily in having world-class, consistent support for the entire CSS2.1 specification" x'D

  • I love it how every speech I watch from google they usually come unprepared xD

  • i bet if they work 24 7 and not 1 day of a break they'll have it by 1 year >.>

  • is it true we have to wait until 2022 for this!!?!!?!

  • Need these features now goddamnit

  • That's some quick typing (o_O)

  • How would you remember all this holy hell

  • hahaha LOL IE supports it 20:46

  • awesome demo, thanks for sharing

  • Comment removed

  • Emacs can do ANYTHING.

  • Hmm I wonder why he's using XP.

  • Because Windows 7 has not been released yet.

  • I use xp and It's a great machine. I prefer it over vista because xp is straight forward and isn't watered down like vista. The watering down could be good for the average person who knows nothing about computers. But It's more of a hassle to me.

If you are talking about windows vs mac then I must ask you, why? Give me one good reason to use mac computers over windows? I find mac very buggy, and while it's got a "prettier" gui, What are your reasons?

  • I was saying that XP is pretty much the best OS :I

  • Oh, haha! RIGHT ON! :P

  • i use linux and thats because i use it the most its just deompnds what u usew your computer for

  • Sure if your looking at compatability..but vista has pratically caught up now...Windows 7 is "vista fixed" so everyone will want a windows 7 which takes its design of windows vista

  • I think vista has just done everything wrong in my opinion. My brother has a computer that runs vista with 8gigs of ram and a pretty recent graphics cards.

I run windows xp with 1 gig of ram and a GeForce 6200 series graphics card but my desktop runs MUCH faster then his. Large 4 gig file transfers take me 4 minutes but take him 14 minutes.

    I think it's vista.

  • Everyone is entitled

  • it is most certainly vista dont worry 7 is much better

  • a note, tho i agree vista is crap, but file transfer rate, has to do with the read/write speed of you harddisk and/or the connection to the location you are tranferring to, do you have the same hardware in the 2 computers? as ive noticed better transfer speed to usb etc in vista then on xp, on a side note try window7 its much better than vista :)

  • The vista hardware is much more recent. There is no reason it should take 4 times as long.

    vista | xp

    duo core single core

    8gig ram 1gig ram

    250gig hd 50gig hd

    I blame the os.

  • dual core isn't much at all, only 1 processor can run at a time.

  • Comment removed

  • Personal choice, possibly. Some people prefer XP and some prefer Vista, and some prefer Windows 7.
