i had an entire colman grill blow off the back of our car into me, as well as ridiculous amount of welts from the hail. I watched tents and pop-ups literally fly past me, down the road. port-o-pots were flipped as well, but then some people righted them. i would have hated to be the person who opened the door and realized that........
A pretty impressive storm, but also not on my top three. I would say the mother of all storms was at the Haymaker festival in Virginia a few years ago (the one Little Feat was supposed to play at but all their stuff was destroyed).
I was at the Haymaker festival and as well as this years Delfest and have to disagree. Both were in my top 5 most fuct up storms I've ever been through but this one was much worse ie: the hail and lightning(my girl frirend was one of the many that got struck).
Two people were struck by lightning, but were fine.
We were under (and holding onto) one of the few E-Z up canopies that survived. Afterward, there was a rather large make shift 'sculpture' of abandoned/destroyed canopies and tents (although most tents were fine).
I think we had a supercell storm: A severe thunderstorm is a thunderstorm that contains 1 or more of the following:
- Hail that is 3/4 of an inch or greater in diameter
- Winds 58 miles per hour or greater
- Tornadoes
They are tremendously powerful and well-organized, containing rotating columns of rising air..capable of maintaining severe strength for hours; produce dangerous straight line winds, large hail and torrential rain; sometimes they spawn particularly strong tornadoes.
Yes....it is classified best as a Micro Burst. I've had a meteorologist watch the video, and check the data. I will be doing a telephone interview on the Weather Channel tonight at about 7:50p.m. EST as they show the video!
I've seen several videos of the storm, and this one best captures the intensity of it. We were under our screen tent holding on for dear life! This is a Delfest we'll never forget! Bring on Delfest '10! Del yeah!
That is me in the yellow bandana on the camp stage with chad and tim carbone. I just went to watch the show and it started sprinkling and before you knew it I WAS PRAYING out loud. tim and chad you are awesome!!! The storm was absolutely crazy.
This footage catches the INTENSITY of the storm, which was downright severe at moments. The whole squall lasted close to an hour and had two bouts of hail, several rounds of gale force winds, and close to 3 inches of rain. Kudos to the kind folks (Amy, Amanda, & Bryan) who joined the Rock the Earth team in protecting our canopy. Sadly, the Homegrown Radio booth (mentioned above) and most of the other non-profit canopies were completely destroyed.
I was working with Sam Bush when this storm hit. We did all we could to save his equipment but some of it was ruined. Never been so scared for my life and I've been through 12 hurricanes and 2 other tornadoes. My girl and a few others at our camp were zapped when lightning hit the tree next to where they were huddled. She's alright but a few others had to be transported to the hospital.
Unreal. I was helping HomegrownRadioNJ hold down their tent. When the first lull came, I headed back to the hobo camp to hold things down. That's when it got really ugly.
Hail no! Del yeah! Epic storm, memorable fest. And it just wouldn't quit, kept switching direction and coming back. By the 3rd round of hail I was in the beer truck, thanks to the Sierra Nevada folks. Unforgettable.

Unless someone was injured, then it's not so awesome. In fact, it wouldn't be awesome at all.

What a fest! That was the scariest storm I've ever been in ..and I've been in a super typhoon in the Philippines.
Great music -- anyone get a vid of late-nite Davisson Brots doing Franklin's Tower? That set rocked..as did everything.
Thanks Del -- great festival. I'll be back next year for sure.
Thanks Allen for helping keep my tent staked down (we were by the baseball field/picnic tables).
See everyone next year! Dave
