Wow that drummer is genius, he only has 1 Tom Tom but theres the sound of 3 different size tom toms. haha but yeh cheap trick had a couple of good songs
Cheap Trick is soooo weird. I love 'em for it but they are all so strange as a band...hahaha. This is one of my most favorite videos of them they just look so goofy lip-synching...
@TheRockafellers Agree REM is very talented and has done some great work. I'm not a fan at all, but I can respect their talent and impact. However, the bands mentioned above should be in ahead of them.
I think some people don't understand that back then the bands were contractually obligated to promote the actual product for sale which was the recorded single. A live performance would promote the live performances of the group but the record companies would want the studio version to be the product pushed on tv. Most bands didn't mind too much because it was so hard to get a good live sound on tv from a technical standpoint.
its not an orchestra track its a keyboard synth and they did have a guy play it on stage sometime also robin played sometimes see the snl performance from 81
@adjohnson2008 lol yup, TV didn't take chances back then, not that they do now, but yeah its the album track for the audio. Biggest tip off is the lack of the string sound on stage that backed the album track
most television broadcasts are lip synced because the producers don't want accidental mistakes which would cost more money redoing the takes, and not many have the guts to let it go live. They care more about the network and budgets than whether or not the artist/band looks silly. It's really unfortunate because so many bands like Cheap Trick are better when they are live.
I think people are over reacting about lip syncing.
Look how entertaining this performance is. They don't have to play perfectly, hitting every note... they can have fun with it.
How many times have you sang along to your favorite tune being silly or animated like you were a rock star? ... That's what I thought. It's fun to lip sync aint it?!
If they were robotic and tried to make it seem like everything matched it would suck!
If your going to lip sync... this is how you do it.
While the band is indeed lip syncing, I'm sure it's not by choice. This is one of the few bands that sounds AWESOME live. All through the years that I've seen them live (30 years roughly) they sound better than the albums.
are they really lip syncing? kinda sounds like the album version of the song is playing over the video. perhaps the live audio didn't appeal to the TV station and they chose to run the song off the album during the broadcast...
@Princessmela1 It's called a style, almost every guitarist has one, or at least every decent guitarist. Look at angus young, do you really think he is still a schoolboy? rick nielsen's style was to be hyperactive on stage with both movements and facial expressions.
I never understood lip sync, You can ether play it or you can't ! & if you can't, Then you shouldn't have your ass up there! Cheap Trick is good live, I'V heard them, Let them play! Now i can see, if your client is Justin Bieber , or One of those Jonas Turds & you wanted to protect Your investment, Sure bust out the karaoke machine, But if your Band is talented, Then let them Roll!!
@bobnegro1 A lot conservative countries (especially mid-east & African ones) are required by LAW to do lip sync. Even what we think of as liberal first-world nations had very stringent laws regarding what was "acceptable" language on live tv shows back in the day. Australia, US UK used sync cause they didn't want these crazy rockers to start cussing our spouting political diatribe. Today, that's still the case in some countries, but in many cases, yeah, the artists simply don't sing well!
I like how Rick (during his "spoken" section) deliberately f*cks off the lip synch and goes for the humor (as usual) instead of "syncing" the lip synch...funny!
You know some people who are not in the recording industry might not realize this, back then Cheap Trick, Journey, Reo Speed wagon and others were on a real wide touring circuit, also keep in mind you didn't have sophisticated sound technology behind the scenes working to keep the vocals crisp and clear like you have today during a live performance!
Great video, not just for the bloopers. Thanks so much for posting this. Love the stage, colors, outfits, hair, lively audience, and lights. CT worked it to perfection, for that show.
This has got to be the funniest CT video, I've seen, LOL! I don't care that they are lip syncing. I know CT normally doesn't do that. Everyone had to do it for this show. During the bit where Rick talks, he sticks his tongue out, while the track still has him talking, lmao! Robin catches it and cracks up, lol. Bun's kit comes crashing down, LOL. Tom and Robin make it look like they are really singing but, Rick keeps drifting off from the mike, lol. Tom laughing at the end is great, lol.
I'm a kid and I'm so sad there has to be such shitty music while I'm a kid. So unlucky. I wish I was a kid in the late 70's and mid 80's.
